Plus I’m sure he would be the number 1 suspect. Kinky stuff was very taboo back then, not to mention he was in a sexual relationship with another male, he would be questioned on how he knew Owen, the relationship between the two, and if Don knew he was married he would have to explain why his wife would want to have such a thing done to him which means he would have to out himself and put himself in danger during a very unaccepting time in history. The fact they met in a hotel room rather than at Don’s house tells me one or both of them were fearful about being found out as a gay male. Plus if they were in a kinky relationship the fact that Don (who I’m assuming was the dom) was most likely hurting Owen would’ve looked incredibly bad on him regardless of the fact Owen consented. It’s also possible Don accidentally or even purposely killed Owen and didn’t want to come forward for it for multiple very obvious reasons. To me the fact his wife sent flowers to his funeral but never claimed her husband although Owen’s mother did eventually claim him, and as far as I’m aware Owen’s wife didn’t come to the funeral, is very suspicious of her. It’s always possible that she already had found out about her husband’s affair(s) with men and was too upset to go to his funeral but still cared for him, or maybe the darker option, she was still in love with him but the fact he didn’t love her back and was gay so she got someone to kill him like her brother or maybe her brother did it on his own out of anger for his sister and because Owen was gay.

now that I've heard so many theories, my guess is that it was indeed a dom/sub scenario, except the guy was dating/engaged to a girl and when the dom (don) left him there (probably bound) and locked the door behind him, the girl showed up, confronted her fiancé (explains why the lady heard male and female voices cursing) and ended up giving him a beating. he was defenseless and probably didn't want to hurt her anyway, so after a few hours he bled out and died and that's why the guy paid for his funeral - he was his lover but couldn't say that, and pretended to be her brother so it wouldn't look too weird ("oh hey i'm not involved but i'd totally pay the expenses for this mysteriously murdered guy" simply doesn't fly). also, it would explain the fingerprints on the phone and why it was left off the hook, maybe she considered calling for help but chickened out - or she was savage and just didn't want to raise suspicion if the phone started ringing nonstop.
