This theme song compliments the time period of the early 70's. Kids in those days wanted to find a job and perhaps earn money to buy their own car. Times and attitudes of High School youngsters was a lot different than today. This theme song takes me back to that time I was in High School and Room 222 was a great show. Thanks for sharing this with us.

Fun fact: The school depicted, Los Angeles High School, was severely damaged by an earthquake which happened just 2 years after the show debuted. The show began in 1969, and the earthquake struck in 1971. This school was subsequently torn down well before Room 222 ended in 1974.

I watched this show regularly, when it was on in the 70s. It seems as thought it was liked then, but suddenly dropped out of all media, soon after, never to be in re-runs or even talked about, with few exceptions. A fascinating portrayal of high school life and nice teachers. I grew up during the era, and high school was like this at least in LA.

The first season was great, some of the best television ever : by the guys who would go on to create and produce MASH and Mary Tyler Moore. But after a couple of years , the show became somewhat of a joke : people laughing AT it, instead of with it- because the kids never graduated!

Mr Dixon. I'm late with this but one of the reasons given for cancelation was a shakeup in ABCs early TGIF here. ABC moved Partridge Family out of this lineup (to Sat. vs. All In The Family-- goodbye Partridges. Night started with Brady Bunch now really burdened by Sanford and Son. A "sophisticated new comedy" (Adams Rib) couldn't provide bridging. Lastly CBS s Friday Movies really "blockbustered" in the Fall of 73 ABC discarded that new sitcom, and Room 222 and 10pm's Love American Style (like 222, started in 1969)...middle of evening had The $6 Million Man go in as midseason replacement for Adams Rib and Room 222. ("Steve Austin" made his Fall 73 debut earlier in two feature length "TV movies" not counting the pilot movie from a year earlier.

It's absolutely amazing how so many tv theme songs can be stuck in our minds for decades after the show is off the air! This is another one of them. A shame we lost Lloyd Haynes at such a young age, 52, from lung cancer on Dec. 31, 1986. Karen Valentine (1:17) was still sweet, sexy, and funny, no matter what version of the theme or what year (1969-74) you see.

There was something about the original arrangement that captured the mood of early morning and another day about to unfold. The recorder playing the melody added a sense of hope and optimism. I really liked that arrangement and even taped it off the TV speaker back then. The updated arrangement sounds ordinary by comparison, more generic prime-time sitcom, with the brass parts reminiscent of the season 1 theme to "The Brady Bunch." I wonder whether the producers felt pressure to "update" the opening theme to keep up with the rapidly changing times of that era.
