Obsession is so good, and is now on Boardgamearena. You said you don't like learning games on BGA though, so maybe that doesn't help. Obsession is a game of decisonal agony where you need to do everything, built around deckbuilding with resource management and tableau building. So good.

This War of Mine - If you play video games, just play the video game. And, then hate yourself for your choices. Dwellings of Eldervale - This is the one on your list that I'd recommend. The shared worker placement board with some light area-control is cool, but the double-activation of using your recalled workers to activate your tableau is what's makes it stand out. Plus the ability to augment your tableau with tokens to make those actions stronger is pretty great. I think it's a shame that Eldervale doesn't have like a 4 colors (8 factions) core box. The content can't be sliced exactly in half, but the core box could be 65% of the content at a more affordable price. (And, a much more reasonably sized box.)

First rule of board game collecting, if your significant other expresses even a modicum of interest in a game you go out and buy it immediately. Grand Austria Hotel is such a great game! Barrage is on my like-to-have list too. It's cost, though, has stopped me from impulse buying it - still need to look into it more. I ended up getting This War of Mine after all the talk of it during the solo deathmatch for the exact same reasons you mentioned. Yet, I still haven't played it as I want a dedicated half day to myself to just be immersed in it - hopefully it happens during the holidays.

My wife has been enjoying Poldark on Prime video so I bought Obsession for her. Although it's some decades after Poldark it has a lot of the things that intrigue her: rebuilding family fortune, estate management, social politics, etc. I had originally passed on it but in looking at it for her I developed more of an interest in it.

Chris, I actually picked up your “Must Have” game a while back at Target for an unbeatable price when it was the last one left on clearance (it was $10 or below - I don’t remember the exact price). Eventually, I picked up the expansion, which has more character powers, which was how the game had come on Kickstarter.
@DeyaViews2 жыл бұрын
The Must-Have games for me right now are Blood Rage and Rising Sun, which I haven't bought yet because they're hella expensive (even moreso since I kinda want to hunt down the Kickstarter boxes of Rising Sun). Under Love-To-Have are Twilight Imperium 4, Black Orchestra, Welcome To, Go and Crokinole. I like big epic games, I like games that treat history with respect, I like coop games (that you can also solo if need be), I like smaller games I can just have ready for when there's 6+ people around, and I really want to play more Go and Crokinole because they're amazing abstract older games that I could see myself getting really invested in. Beyond that, there's a handful of party games, a lot of Unmatched sets and some other miniature-filled games (including The Godfather: Corleone's Empire), some wargames (COIN series, Sekigahara, Friedrich and Maria--and while I'd love to play Paths of Glory, Virgin Queen and Here I Stand, I think those are "I want to play them, not own them" tier), and a few Eurogames that can round out the collection I have so far. I love games designed by Reiner Knizia, Kramer & Kiesling, Eric Lang and Vital Lacerda.

Great List! Obsession is my favorite game and has been since the Upstairs Downstairs expansion. I really hope you get a chance to try it. Hand management. Tile placement. Resource Management / worker placement. It has a solo mode, co-op mode, and it plays well at all player counts. Just love it.

Dwellings of Eldervale is a great game. Worker placement + conflict. They integrate these elements so well.

The chops make me laugh. Anyway I can vouch for This War of Mine. I played it and the Days of the Siege campaign expansion solo and it has been one of my best board game experiences. A bit sad at times but so rewarding when you manage to survive.

Tyrants of the Underdark is great! It's a really fun blend of deckbuilding and area control. My only ever issue with it is the production quality which apparently got worse in the second edition but it's so much fun to play.

Highly recommend Awkward Guests - I finally found a copy this past year; BoardGameBliss is the only place I have ever seen it in stock. This War of Mine is really good! I’ve already played through 3 campaigns, both solo and with a friend. Funny enough; the Retail copy appears to be better than the Kickstarter Edition (saw salty posts on BGG from the backers complaining Retail made improvements). I’ve also been interested in Eric Lang’s Godfather game, but I haven’t seen it available for ages now… oh well.

Love the list. We played Cryptid and liked it as well. We have Planet X and played it 126 times this past year so I would highly recommend it. It is a great puzzle to solve. Also we just got Awkward Guests last week and have played it 6 times already. It is my wife's current favorite. If you love deduction games then these are really fun games. Also keep the wolverine sideburns!

Strongly recommend Clank! Legacy if you like the subject at all. It's a campaign, but at only 10 games, it's not too onerous. And the story elements are very strong (though there's a lot of reading, if that's a negative for you.) I like Beyond the Sun a lot. Certainly the tech tree is a dominant element in the game, but the exploration part (even though it takes up only a small part of the table) is very good as well. And the production tracks are well handled and very important to the game play. Lost Ruins of Arnak is very good and I'll happily play it pretty much any time. Thematic with good flow, but somehow it doesn't quite reach the pinnacle of games for me. (I prefer Dune: Imperium, FWIW.) That said, it's much prettier than Dune: Imperium and you have interesting decisions throughout. I think it might be that I really like the theme of Dune more than that of Lost Ruins.

I would get clank Catacombs over Clank Legacy. All mechanics carried over and its not a legacy game. It’s also very replayable because the board is modular and items/keys are randomized every time so it keeps you in your toes every game, no game will likely be the same.

We really enjoy Isle of Cats, I just have the retail version, but I've considered getting the kittens and beasts expansion. Depending on how you feel about polyomino and drafting vs flip and write, you may also consider Isle of Cats Explore & Draw, I haven't played it myself but I know some people that prefer it to the original. Also worth looking into if you enjoy polyomino is Planet Unknown.

I waited for 3 months for Santorini and it was the biggest disappointment I have had in gaming, I hate it 😂 nothing happens for the first half of the game and then it turns in to a worse chess 🤷🏻 don't get why people love it so much, I fell for the hype and it didn't live up, i felt the same about hive, i must not like abstract games but i do love Onitama so i dont know
@RoomandBoardReviews Жыл бұрын
Aw dang! I'm sorry you didn't like it. My buddy Zach also really dislikes it and it broke my heart I was so excited to play it with him! I just love how the asymmetrical powers shake up every game, that's my favourite part. Hive is okay to me, but gets a bit stale after a while. It's still something I want to love though. Have heard only great things about onitama
@SonofSol1 Жыл бұрын
@@RoomandBoardReviews Onitama is the winner for me personally and I'm not a massive fan of abstract games, I think I built Santorini up in my head too much and also the fact I had to get it imported and it was a 3 month wait probably added to the hatred 😂
