I’ve noticed that what makes the “untalented” singers famous honestly just comes down to great songs, they may not have the best range or control or stability while performing live but that doesn’t necessarily stop a song from being good, a lot of singers have amazing discographies while having not-so-developed voices and that might be because they put more time and effort into developing their music than their voice. I think a good example of that is lil Nas x.

To be fair, all the “talented” singers are being showcased with their best moments, and the “untalented” singers are being showcased with their worst moments. You could make anyone look talented/untalented that way, only showing the best or worst of their work. I mean, if you’d only ever heard wild honey pie from the Beatles, you’d probably be *really* confused as to why they’re such beloved artists. If you’d only ever heard Mariah Carey’s infamous Christmas performance (you know the one) you’d assume she was a terrible vocalist, when obviously that’s not true.

the thing a lot of people don't understand is that being the greatest most proficient singer with all the technique in the world doesn't guarantee you success. there's of course production and lyrics and melodies that need to be good but you actually need more than "great voice" to succeed. I think having a unique voice, great stage presence, being able to transmit emotions while you sing and PERFORM the songs is so much more important than natural talent or just good technique. otherwise, everyone would be just listening to classically trained singers or broadway people, right? but that's just not the case. you do need some baseline vocal training and technique of course (if you ever wanna sing live) but there are plenty of very good singers who no one cares about because they are just boring to listen to

I'm assuming it's also what Joel said - she was lipsyncing so wasn't even trying to sing well. She did that A LOT in her prime as a pop singer. There were just artists that are more of performers (high stage presence, good dancers, good with crowds etc). Then there were artists that are more on visuals (let's say Katy Perry with her iconic aesthetics, but don't stand out as much vocally). Then there were artists that are basically hit-makers, works with good producers, or have connections, were doing acting on the side, or anything else that could support their singing career. Basically being an artist doesn't always revolve around on being a good singer. Some artists are just better on other aspects of being an artist than the actual singing aspect.

It's interesting seeing Joel's dynamic with different people on his channel. With Dave from BoyInABand, he becomes someone who jokes a lot and has to be outright funny to offset Dave's dry humor. With Chance, he becomes just someone listening to music and talking about basic melodies and it's more about how the music makes him feel than anything too technical. With Jonas, it's a Swedish mess of mixing English and Swedish and making fun of each other and the sarcasm is off the charts. With Daniel (@DanielThrasher), he is so much more nerdy than with anybody else. They dive into melodies and both Joel and Daniel always have a technical music thing to point out but they also aren't afraid to show how close they are as friends so there are great jokes too... I have to say that I enjoy his collabs with Daniel a lot more but that's because I like the nerdy side of music and appreciate the analyzing that goes into each song but also enjoy how they can completely goof off at other times.

Bob Dylan is interesting. I think now, his singing voice is more or less gone, and there are a lot of videos of him sounding pretty bad live. But, bizarrely, he's also responsible for some absolutely fantastic live albums, where he sounds absolutely great. He really could make that nasally drawl work back in the day, and he had a real talent for arranging and re-imagining his own songs in a way that I've never seen anyone else do. Live at Budokhan and The Rolling Thunder Revue are both fabulous examples of this. He also, even more bizarrely, could sing in a completely different way if he chose to. He did one album, in 1969, where he completely dropped the drawl and instead used a beautiful, rich baritone. Check out his fab duet with Johnny Cash, Girl From the North Country, for an example.

This isn't even "talented vs untalented", these videos are just about picking a great performance by a good singer and finding another good singer's bad perfomance and pitting them against each other based on that. I usually love your videos Joel, but I think this one is just in bad taste overall. Not to mention that even the greatest artists can have bad days and put on a comparatively bad show, but then to have people judge your singing abilities by that ONE bad perfomance while ignoring the good ones is just distasteful and unfair.
@rjpearson2 жыл бұрын
I do see where you are coming from, but he did say a few times that it might have been a bad performance for them. He maybe could have said a disclaimer kind of thing at the beginning to say some of these may not be their best performance but I don't think you can say he didn't point out if he thought it was just one bad performance.
@cintiatakacs1582 жыл бұрын
@@rjpearson To be fair, I have more of a problem with the concept of the video in general than Joel himself and what he said. He always tries to be nice where he can, I just don't think that the idea of videos like these is great. Yes, he did say that these may not be their best performance, but his editor/researcher/whoever still put this together with what clearly seem to be one-off bad performances for most of the so called "untalented" artists.
@rjpearson2 жыл бұрын
@@cintiatakacs158 yeah, I think this video would be better if they only let Joel and his Roomie (whoever it is for the video) make the decision, it is unfair the way that some of the performances were categorized based on a performance when Joel would have more knowledge of other performances from the artist.

@justinechaine56792 жыл бұрын
@@leonie3294 maybe, people keep making it a competition between Harry and Louis especially and I'm tired of that. Harry is always said to be better, yet, for some reason, on his tour, so far, I think he might be needing to rest his voice or something like that because he has not sang any higher part in his songs (lowering in pitch, key and notes). He could also just be changing the noted out of boredom just to make it more fun after singing those songs so munch, as a lot of artists do that. Either way it's from singing the songs too many times. While Louis always goes for the same notes, pitches and keys. He has dodged his runs in some of his shows, but no one's voice can be the best every day, that applies to Harry too, and he has KILLED them in most of his shows. I hope Joel will actually listen to what everyone is telling him and will give him a chance and look at how munch bettered his voice is. I know he's worked on it a ton and it shows so munch. His voice has become double more melodic and pitch following.

There were definitely some better clips to choose for some of these untalented options. It’s like confirmation bias to just choose mediocre clips for the “untalented” group. All performers have good and bad performers. And generally the talented group are consistently better than the other group. But it’s honestly not a very interesting or challenging video when framed this way where there’s clear cherry-picking. Also, vocal reaction KZbin needs to retire that Britney clip. There’s other live examples of her singing. Also, that clip lacks the context of the fact that this was a ballad in the middle of a concert where she did full, hard choreo routines the entire time. At least take the SNL performance.
