I feel like they should do 2 clips for everyone, talented or untalented. One clip from a preformance that is generally thought of as amazing, and one from a bad one. That way they can decide if they really are untalented or if it was a one off. Talented singers have horrible preformances, so it'd be more interesting to see Roomie and co determine if the singers sound good even in the bad preformances and vice versa. Some of the untalented choices really surprised me.

She is literally the Queen of British pop and the most influential woman in music if we're being honest. I'd say she is just as influential as The Beatles if we're being real. I know on FIRST THOUGHT you're like " That's a bold statement " , but look at the Indie genre and Indie-pop spectrum. Who else was putting spoken word, operatic flourishes, using literary references and using headvoice and falsetto how she was before her IN THE MAINSTREAM? She influenced a lot of people even people who don't know they were influenced by her . . I don't think the current standing META for singers like Billie, Lorde, Marina , Kimbra, the modern legend that is Florence, Aurora all the way back to Tori Amos , Annie Lennox and Bjork etc. Would EXIST with intricate songs if it WEREN'T for Kate Bush. (I'd say even Lana's early work with caricature vocals in her falsetto use. ) She set a trend in music and was one of the first to be really innovative and forward with technology in music.

The problem with the talented/ untalented Is that the difference is often the level of Training. There are a lot of singer's who get labeled talented who actually just went through years of voice training and singers who get called untalented are often people who started singing later in their life. Id argue if we're talking natural talent it's either being able to do exceptional range, or having a distinctive voice that allows you to defy some of the conventional rules on how songs are supposed to be sung

People seem to use the word talent in place of skill a lot. We don’t know how naturally talented any of these people are, what we’re seeing is their level of skill. So I tend to just ignore the word talent with things like this and only consider it as skill level.

The problem I always have with these is that for the talented singers their best clips are used and for the untalented singers their worst clips are used, so that obviously pushes anyone to think that way, even they these 'talented' singers also have those bad clips somewhere on the internet. It would be more fair to take a very good clip from both artists and then discuss who the less talented one is, cause a lot of those 'untalented' have some good clips out there too.

Yes! And I felt like they way they presented Lizzo and Pitbull was similar, but they said Lizzo is untalented and Pitbull is talented. I'm not saying Lizzo is the number one best vocalist at all, but Pitbull is not a super-talented singer, lol. They both are about the performance and their energy, and I don't feel like they were judged equally here. Even if Lizzo isn't a great singer, she's a damn good performer. Same as Pit.

I mean it wasn't her first time singing. You can find performances of her doing say . . . " Without You " before this time and she is vocally 10 x better. It was all nerves. SNL is a MASSIVE televised performance opportunity. She was just launching into stardom and success. It was just hitting her after she'd been snubbed several times. It was finally her time and she was scared of fucking it up and she kind of did but it ended up not mattering.

This feels a little unfair because often the situation is that artists are choosing to sing live while also moving around and are dealing with technical issues. And there are so few singers doing that these days and our ears are being trained to expect impossible perfection during live performances and I don’t like that. Some of these people are still amazing singers and we should 👏👏 their real performances. (But a few just do suck)

Honestly I don't understand why Kate Bush was considered untalented. Because to me talent isn't just range, it is realizing your range and playing to your strengths and Kate Bush played to her strengths also her music isn't supposed to be filled with vocal runs and typical singing like that, in fact her vocal style is more similar to Progressive Rock in terms of vocals, because when you listen to prog rock in terms of vocals, none of the artists have what you would consider typical singing talent but they can plenty of emotion in their voice and usually Kate Bush is telling a story in her music. It's not "I will love you forever" instead it's an actual narrative in terms of story so vocal runs and all that stuff typically associated with talent would take away from the songs. Also the style just works really well, I can tell you I personally would rather listen to Kate Bush than an artist like Hozier simply because the music, the vocals and the style all blend together to form a really great sound.

I'm sorry, but was I the only one who was a bit dissappointed of the way Rommie and the gang treated Mrs. Jenkins? The truth about her is that she was actually suffering from syphilis. Because her mind was slowly corrupting from the illness she became unable to tell whether she was good performer or not. No one of her close ones had the heart to tell her, the truth because she was so fascinated of music and signing, they thought at one point, it kept her alive. The truth is she was a great, noble and generous person, as well as a philanthropist, who did not deserve that kind of treatment. So when continuing making fun of her till present day, you could at least mention her condition with a little sympathy in mind.

Jason Derulo originally went to college to be an opera singer. That performance def does not do him justice

He us one of the best vocalists out there and he has incredibal breath control in all his dancing. He has beautiful tone and a beautiful and unique vocal dissonance on his vocals! However, being a classical or an operatic vocalist are not one in the same. In classical vocals one might sing arias but that does not mean they are "training for opera". For opera one has to train for YEARS on theory, multiple languages, opera specialties (bel canto, Wagerian etc). I know personally hoe difficult it I'd to go this into opera. I was in grad school for becoming s professional operatic vocalists. One can learn to pieces of opera, but most arias are snippets of the opera, for example, the Mad Scene in Lucia di Lammermore is around 13 minutes long! From what I have read on Jason is he attended a high school or an undergrad program in dramatic arts, which consisted of dance, vocal music, acting, and possibly visual arts. He has been on Broadway multiple times successfully. Broadway training is completely different than opera as well. I am not taking any from Jason's stupendous vocal abilities by any means. Just clearing up the difference I am hearing of him being classically trained and trained in opera. I hear this a lot, just trying to educate others.

@@briannab4037 because it seemed too predictable for them to get a bunch of good clips of the "talented singers" and then get not so good clips of the "not talented" singers. I expected them to mix it up somewhat. Plus, talent is subjective. You say "She's known for being one of the best vocalists." Best is a superlative of good, which is an opinionated term. And if a person doesn't like her vocals, then they probably won't consider her a good vocalist, let alone the best. That doesn't necessarily make them wrong. Even in the video, they themselves indicated that talent is a matter of opinion, the person who made the compilation determined, "These singers are talented. These singers are not as talented." And Joel is saying, "I think these singers that aren't considered talented are talented."

@@kalinodaquiri You might like or dislike a person's creative output, but some talents aren't a matter of opinion at all. For example, one may think Stevie Wonder doesn't make good music or even hate the way he plays, but it's not subjective to say that he's a talented instrumentalist.

Many people think that Halle Berry is a talented actress, a friend of mine thinks that she "can't act to save her life." Talent is innate by definition and requires little effort to get to an "acceptable" point. What people call talent, is more so the result of effort or hard work, as opposed to natural ability, which is what talent is. I do agree with you on the notion that you can dislike something based on personal taste and still believe that someone is talented though.

Avril Lavigne is FAR from untalented, Even in the clip that was used she still sounded decent. She just had that post-grunge style of singing that a ton of other bands and artists had during that period. You could say that it's an acquired taste, But not everybody who sings like that is "untalented". Plenty of those vocalists (Including Sully Erna from Godsmack, Brent Smith from Shinedown, Shaun Morgan from Seether, Aaron Lewis from Staind, Wes Scantlin from Puddle Of Mudd, ect.) were great at making their voices sound big. I'd say the same was true for Avril, She sounds powerful in those 2002 - 2006 era performances.

The issue is that they take the best of the "talented" and the worst of the "untalented". It would be better to take all their best or all their worst and we judge them on the same level.
