Moral of the STORY, As someone whose housemate turned into a weird stalker, often times men confuse women’s kindness as romantic interest. I know we’re taught to be “nice” but that can backfire big time. Better to be polite and keep a distance if someone has a crush on you, as constant contact only exacerbates the fantasy and potential danger. And look for female only housemates if you absolutely need to share bills etc.

As I’ve gotten older I’ve learnt that you should follow your instincts, unless there is a logical explanation not to. If someone shows you who they are believe them!! It’s reassuring to a point, shows how loved she is that people went to check on her after not getting a response so quickly, it’s disturbing but hindsight is visible after the fact.
