In 1914, my family came to America through Ellis Island from Germany; the journey by land was arduous and they arrived too late to take the ship, they had originally planned..the Titanic, by one day. Watching these World History Documentaries answers many of my questions as there are rumors within the family that they were once Jewish.

....and they weren't wrong. History validated this fear. The Iron Curtain that descended upon all of Europe following WW2 landed on the collective necks of Germany. Their nation was divided into two different nation-states (East and West Germany); territory was stripped from them; Berliners were separated from their families by a massive wall manned by Soviet machine gunners; and Berlin would've been starved to death in 1949 after Stalin cut off all deliveries of food and supplies to them. It would've worked too had the US Air Force not undertaken a massive airlift campaign to deliver food and medicine to them to keep everyone in the city alive. The German women who'd survived the war and were often left widowed and childless were raped by the occupying Red Army on a daily basis; children were not allowed to attend school because the Soviets sent them to work camps in Siberia as a slave labor force simply because they had family members who were registered members of their towns' National Socialist Party local chapters, or they had fathers or brothers who served in the Waffen SS during the war. All of these things were not only excused by the Soviets in the post-war years, they were lauded as the most effective steps in the "de-Nazification" process. Trust me, the Communists were no better. The Nazis endangered the German people by starting a war they couldn't win. The Communists spent the next 45 years torturing, degrading, and humiliating the German people when they were most vulnerable after losing that war they couldn't win.

It was always interesting to learn about World history in Junior High School, High School, and College. It was particularly interesting to learn the history of the various conflicts the world had to endure and particularly the cause of these conflicts, the origins that led to millions of human lives lost. Most interesting was that we learned about dictators, totalitarian governments, despots and how they rose to power. As an American, despots and dictators was a foreign concept to us students and although we had many questions, we simply could not relate to an American president with absolute power. As the son of a World War II combat veteran and 2 uncles who served in the European theater, I'm glad they are not alive today to see what America has become with Donald Trump as president. This is the closest America has EVER come to a dictatorship, loss of freedom, racial hatred, and division. America better be careful, when we become complacent we can sink into the depths of totalitarianism as easy as any nation on earth. Liberty and freedom is a fragile concept and this generation of Americans are proof to that.
@mingxuanfan2 жыл бұрын
I don’t see American ever becoming a dictatorship, the culture with a long history of emperors and very little “interruptions” from other cultures are mostly vulnerable to dictatorship, America started out literally as “the United States”, which means it’s created for diversity and creativity, that’s why atomic bomb…….. to Steve Jobs, Elon musk… all happened here, either under democrats or republicans’ leadership, only America had the capacity to grow these great minds to push human beings forward.

I like history but history makes me sad. History is important so we learn from it and we don't repeat the same mistakes. But, still, we keep repeating. For a brief period it seems we work towards the progress of mankind. And then we wipe it all out and regress into ignorance. I often think, perhaps this world would be different if another species had developed intelligence because as a species capable of high intellect we always seem to neglect that it needs to be hand in hand with wisdom. Intelligence without wisdom proves to be very dangerous. And as a species we repeatedly demonstrate we care much more for one than the other. We are proud of our big brains while at the same time mocking those that display wisdom or empathy. Yes, i like History but it always leaves me saddened. As a humanist i paradoxically end up feeling our species is undeserving of this gift. Intelligence.
