This is why you only use UL Wire, the short goes to where it’s shorted and stops it doesn’t take out the whole wiring harness. UL 14 gauge and 10 gauge wire. You were lucking my brother

You had your main ground disconnected. The starter was engaged because the solenoid was stuck. Therefore, the high amperage circuit to run the starter was completed by that small ground wire, which melted. There wasn’t enough current to turn the starter, but enough to melt the wires.

If a fuse was on the ground wire, also, this would not have ever happened? I know that's not something normal, but maybe not a bad idea. Maybe just a higher amp fuse.

did they not disconnect that before his dad started working on the starter?

@@tater_relocatermost trucks have more than one "ground' wire connected to the batteries. The main ground often goes to the engine block itself. Of course the frame and alternator and engine and radiator and cab are are tied together with grounding straps or cables also. This particular main ground wire appears disconnected already before the second ground was disconnected. Often the secondary ground goes to the frame. Sometimes the cables are of the same gauge and may not look different. However with a starter motor commonly creating the biggest current draw the main ground goes to the engine to accommodate that. And then their may be other commonly fused grounds such as an ECM ground and other utility grounds from an inverter or refrigerator going directly to the batteries depending on what the truck is outfitted with.

The starter alone doesn’t explain why your ground wires to your lights were extremely hot/melted since they weren’t even on. Grounding issues and that solenoid probably. I’ve never seen low voltage cause that issue or any issue similar to it. I’ve done more restorations than I can remember and I’ve also done high voltage high amperage high end competition grade car audio systems for years. Really glad for y’all that you didn’t lose the truck or end up with serious damage. Did you buy a Blue KW? You could always buy an interior; door panels and dash out of a newer crashed Pete and upgrade the interior of Rooster. What I’d probably do is get the dash and doors leather wrapped and get rid of the wood like dash panels and do something like forged carbon fiber with a maroon clear that will match the exterior paint color.

I can tell you that you have 4 batteries in parallel. You wanr to put the main starter wires off of one of the middle batteries. If you have them on the end battery the way you do all 4 batteries are feeding through 1 wire. If you move your main power and groind wores to one of middle batteries the current can flow from both sides to the center. It gives you more available amerage.

Stop lying... it's a sin...you didn't replace that hole wiring harness in the Pete all the way new...you patched it up(Motor only)...and now the old part(chassis/frame) got hot and melted ... This is what happens when you get in a rush and cheat corners...Fyi a new complete wiring harness would be brand new wires all the way through out the truck.

I'm having to deal with a few things myself all of a sudden at the Holidays so I can relate with having to prioritize business over pleasure so you can make sure all your cylinders are running at full tilt. At least you were able to catch a big problem right there where you were and you should be fortunate to be able to fix things with people you have hired on versus having to hire out and pay out a more expensive price for the fix.
