Actually, (in Canada) baby seals are protected by the law until they shed their White fur, so it is more profitable to hunt the adults as they are bigger. Also, seals are in overpopulation and risk to starve themselves to death as there is a lot less natural predators in the sea anymore (Orcas and the like). Finally, an experienced hunter will kill the seal in one or two swings as the hooked clubs have been designed to kill efficiently. I guess there would be other, more costly way of hunting them, but rifles would probably scare them away and lethal injections would definitely be rejected because of the costs. The baby protection movement was started by French actress Brigitte Bardeau because they are "cute", but she did not even care to learn about seals before having photo-shoots with the white-furred adorable babies. As a result, she touches them and thus changed their smell. Unable to recognize their babies by smell, the parents probably left them to die of starvation.

The news and the subsequent anger that latches onto a story like that perpetual "reletable anger" the tendency for people to be angry about things they and other people do. Most people have at some point took a selfie, and in that sense that story can be relatable, in the source for this animation burnie even describes the thought process behind the people which lead to the dolphins death. You, nor a large portion of people can relate to poaching, and so no one can really find a mass means to rally anger as it cannot be easily equated to actions taken everyday, by everyday people. That, I believe is where the seeming unjust distribution of anger towards the selfie comes as opposed to poaching.

Both sides of this discussion have goot points, while poaching is a bigger problem than selfying... there is nothing that the rooster teeth folks can do to stop poaching. I think that it is quite logical... to spread awareness about the problems we can stop, because while they may be smaller problems... they are problems people will more likely encounter. And thus it may very well give people an innate sense of responsibility towards these things, and thus can leader to wider change towards the things that are bigger and really matter. or maybe I am just dumb for not picking a side for or against gavin and I should be ashamed of myself for considering both viewpoints instead of being a tool because I am a fanboy.
