Finally got through a full game with my GF and the factions are very rule heavy and hirelings were fun but Jesus trying to get the laws/rules down was tedious (controlling multiple hirelings and discarding control tokens for every card isn't explained well) Glad I got this but it was jumping into the deep end for new players

I'm a coop / kingmaking tabletop gamer. I bought Root two months ago and loved it! I loved the dynamics so much that I bought all expansions that I could find. Unfortunaly, I'm missing Underworld, Riverfolk and Partisans deck. Oh, the first 3 in the list? Yeah, not that I didn't want it so much, I'd love to change both clockwork for it, but I am from Brazil, and here we are waiting the next printing to finally get our hands in it. Hope that doesn't take an year. But after discovering Root, I found your channel and I've gotta say: You rock! Your content is awesome and keep the good work. I need to finish all digital gameplays from it, so it may take a while. Cheers from Brazil!!

It's fun to see how the expansion is done in another country ☺ In France Root is sell into a big box format: - the base game also include the Riverfolk Expansion and the Mechanical Marquise 1.0. - the "first" expansion include the Underworld Expansion, the Clockwork Expansion 1, the Exiles and Partisans Deck and the Vagabond Pack. - and later this year we will have the "second" expansion witch include the Marauder Expansion, the Clockwork Expansion 2, the Landmarks Pack and all the Hirelings

In France, we don't have that much choice. For the moment, the Root basic box includes the American basic box + riverfolk and the underground extension includes "your" underground + clockwork + the vagabond extension + the partisans deck. That said, it's not all bad, with lots of cool content. And we're looking forward to the localization of Marauder (+ clockwork 2 in the same box) later this spring, as well as individual boxes for hirelings.

I bought base game + every expansion up until the underworld era and a self made landmarks. It had a great price. Then I acquired lake/mountain map and resin markers in a groped buy effectively making them free. Then I bought maruders and printed hirelings cards. Total cost is around 110$ and I am so so happy with it!

So far I've bought 1 expansion, it was going to be the clockwork expansion but it was sold out! I couldn't find it anywhere! So I got the riverfolk expansion for the Robo-Marquise 1.0 board instead. Not quite as good as letting any board be filled with more bots but it's better than nothing for filling in more in lower player counts.

The game's editor in France made an awesome job including Riverfolks in the base game, the vagabond pack + exiles / partisans deck + clockwork expansion 1 in the Underworld expansion; and clockwork expansion 2 + the landmarks + Hirelings in the Marauder expansion, making a total of 3 big boxes to have nearly the complete set

Sam: "hello and welcome to Lord of the board , my name is Sam and today we are going to be doing a fun video where I am going to be basically making a sort of not really ranking but kind of buying order at least what I would suggest the order of expansions you get for my favorite board game rout TT if you have not heard about root you should probably learn a little bit about the game before watching this video but my channel is really good for that I've got a ton of content regarding this game it is my favorite game on the planet so let's go ahead and talk about really get these obviously I'm not going to put it up there but the base game should be the first thing that you get if you don't have the base game then this is kind of a useless list to you but the first expansion you should get after you've gotten the base game maybe you've played a couple games of that the first expansion I think you should get is the underworld expansion now the reason why you want to get the under underw World expansion here is because it comes with two new factions you get one militant faction one Insurgent faction the underground duy being that militant faction very fun you can go up against the cats with it against the Eerie if you're just playing two-player um but also you've got just kind of more options for multiplayer games with a new militant faction to add to the duy and the Maris theat also it comes with two new maps and I think that's one of the reasons why I think this is really really great because you get the lake map you get the mountain map that's going to have so much variability in your games trust me the other thing is the corvid conspiracy in the game to teach I can teach it so easily so I think it's really good to get that one early on because teaching people route is already kind of a tough challenge so get the corvid conspiracy in there it's going to make your life way easier and the second expansion that I believe you should get is the Exiles and partisans deck the reason why I think you should get the Exiles and partisans deck next is because that base deck in route it has a it's it's just like a higher cost of card kind of amount for for pretty much all the cards like all the cards cost a lot and so in order to promote more crafting in your games the Exiles and partisans deck is a great option for you the other thing is that there are favor cards in that base deck they're fun to play with for a little bit I mean they definitely have good storytelling but one thing that I've noticed is that they don't usually create feel-good moments a lot of people get very angry and sad when one of those is played it kind of just destroys everything in every color of clearing so the Exiles and partisans deck actually adds partisans which are a very interesting type of card kind of replaces the favors in a way and also the general cost of cards is a lot lower so you can you're going to have more crafting in your games and I think that's important skill kind of to learn in route um so I think the Exiles and partisans deck is is the next obvious choice um but also if you want more information like detailed breakdown of these decks I have a video on it so I'll go ahead and Link it above but also check it out in the description down below okay so the third expansion that I recommend getting is going to be the riverfolk expansion this comes with two factions it comes with the lizard cult um as well as the riverfolk company both factions that I would deem to be a little bit more tricky to learn and get but so so worth it uh I find them both to be very very fun I think it's good at this point to add a more complex faction to learn like the lizard cult they're one of the weirdest ones that you'll encounter they just kind of play differently with the revealing card mechanics so um I I think well I guess the underground duy so here we go so see the underground duchy already have the revealing card mechanics so it's kind of softly brought you in to the lizard cult also having that but also just being super bizarre uh this also comes with three new vagabonds which what was it the scoundrel the arbit and the vagrant are the uh vagabonds that come in the riverfolk expansion so the vagrants the best Vagabond ever nobody can can fight with me on version and a woodland Alliance version in this box and that can help kind of add in a mock player at those lower player accounts but also but also you get two new factions and they're both militant you get the lord of the hundreds which are kind of roaring rats but you also get the uh the Badgers why expansion number four because to me I think you need a really good understanding of the game in order to learn the Badgers well and I personally I've taught this game dozens and dozens and dozens of times I love teaching this game but one thing I've Noti is that teaching the Badgers is one of the hardest things to do to a new player even to somebody who's played the game a couple of times they are very much a difficult faction to Gro when the hundreds though they are much easier they are still quite a bit of a text Heavy faction like they've got a lot of text if you think about it so both of these factions I do believe this is a perfect spot to introduce them now once you've gotten the three expansions before I think it's perfect time to add these ones to your game nights all right so fifth expansion where are we going with the fifth expansion so at this point it is probably going to change a little bit uh oh actually no no I think the next expansion is going to be the Vagabond expansion because this is going to round out all of the available faction content options in the game now here oh also I didn't mention this but the marauder expansion also has ad set which is a great way to kind of balance some of these earlier factions a little bit but also a new setup module but the thing is you can actually print out those rules for ad set earlier so I still think you should wait till the fourth expansion for that but fifth expansion we've got the Vagabond expansion this comes with cute little meeples for all your vagabonds but also comes with three new vagabonds to play the game with and those are going to be the Harrier the adventurer and the Ronin um just more vagabonds right and also these adorable little meeples I think it's really cheap so you can get that for a really good price and I think that would be a good fifth expansion to your root games now from here I believe that we are getting into some kind of tricky territory where depending on what kind of player you are you might want to go a different direction if you are more of a solo player you would probably go for the solo content here if you are playing a lower player counts or you know group multiplayer games you might want to go for landmarks or hirelings my personal opinion on this one is going to be you'd want to get the hirelings box here this comes with the rest of the hirelings um there's actually a couple mini expansions I'm just going to kind of put them all in but basically buy some of those Hier Lings they basically add like I said more padding to the lower player count games I find them really great at three player they're very fun but they just come with all these cool little meeples and cool little rules just stuff you can add to kind of the end of your game here uh and then I think like once you've played out all this content like it's going to take you a long time to get to this point but seventh expansion at this point I would say the landmarks um and once again this is barring if you're if you're a solo player I would probably have gotten these two expansions a little sooner but just personally I I don't like I'm doing this for me so for me this is not going to go up as high but the landmarks expansion at seven so this is basically like a little module that basically adds these landmarks so there are all these little different things that you can add to maps and they add cool mechanics and cool new rules so this can make the existing four maps that you have very different so now you can have the lost city which counts as any suit um or you could add the fery to any map which is really fun so there are just a lot of different ways now to play the game with these landmarks so I would put that at number seven all right so solo players the first Clockwork expansion is a bit easier to learn than the second Clockwork expansion so I'm going to go ahead and fold these both up as the eight and nth picks for expansion buy these these are a way to play route Solo or to add a bot to your two-player games um which is what me and Kate did actually quite a bit at some point um now with the hirelings existing we don't do it as much I'll be honest this is also a way to solo completely root so if you want to do that and if you are interested in soloing rout I do have um a link in the description about a channel give paw hobby that has done a ton of amazing work for the root Community I just wanted to give them a shout out about the root solo scene got the links down there um but yeah that is kind of the order in which I would say you should get these root expansions and why kind of I think you should but we're going to go number one underworld expansion then go ahead and buy the Exiles and partisans deck riverfolk expansion Marauder expansion Vagabond expansion the Hier Lings box the landmarks expansion and Clockwork one Clockwork 2 that is it what order would you get these expansions or maybe what order did you buy these expansions I am curious to find out and would love to hear from you so if you have any of that information go ahead and drop it down below So I got the bace game of root then I got the underworld expansion because I knew that I had two extra bords that I really wanted to play and I got the landmark expansion because I wanted do you know add some cool things to all three original boards and I think the next one I’m going to get will be the Vagabon expansion can’t wait to see more root content❤

Here in Germany supply with Root is an on/off thing. So basically I buy everything as soon as it is possible (except the clockwork, I don't like AI in Boardgames).

I’m a huge Root fan. It’s in my Top-10. I have both Clockworks-the first we’ve broken out twice, the second is still in shrink. They are the last expansions I’d recommend. If you want to play solo, get the App. If you want 2P, get Hirelings. Cheers.

Mostly I agree with your list. Two days ago I had exactly the same conversation: which expansions to grab first and I swapped Marauder with Riverfolk and put Vagabond Pack in between. Personally I find Riverfolk most difficult factions to teach and play, so for me it's last pick from big expansions. Exiles and partisans are must have even for base game ;)

The rats are great, even for beginners. But the badgers are quite tricky and in my opinion only for advanced players. That's why I would buy the Marauders in the end. I agree with you, in the riverfolk expansion there are two factions that are intermediate in complexity, not necessarily beginner friendly either. However, the Otters and the Lizards are two unique factions (especially the Otters) that can bring a very interesting dynamic to the game, so I would prefer this expansion to the Marodeurs.

I'm getting Riverfolk before Underground because Lizatds are my favorite, and Vagabond before E&P because of the meeples, but otherwise sounds good. Of course if they announce a new expac Kickstarter before I can afford everything, that takes precedence (especially if it has Bats like Leder wants) EDIT: Also have no interest in Clockwork or Hirelings. I've got Digital if I want to solo.

Since I’ve backed Root on Kickstarter since it was first announced, my buying order was I bought everything when it was first available. That said, if I was just getting into Root, I’d suggest this: 1. Root Base game 2. Exiles and Partisans deck 3. Underworld (like LotB says, another board plus two easy learning factions) 4. Marauders 5. Riverfolk 6. The Hirelings 7. Vagabond set 8. Resin clearing markers 9. Landmarks set 10. Clockwork 1 11. Clockwork 2

Would you suggest just starting out by playing with the exiles and partisans deck when teaching a new group?

Veteran gamers I would lean yes. But if your group doesn’t normally play games like this I think the standard deck is good to play for a first game because it is a lot harder to craft cards in it. And the abilities are really easy and don’t need much clarification at all. Exiles and partisans have 1 cost cards with some small text at times!

@@Kris_Terry haha yeah they are really rough cards. I would actually remove all the favors from the deck if you absolutely don’t want to have them in. They cost 3 of one color so they are really telegraphed.

To be honest, you can also print the Clockbots and the Hirelings for free if you have all the main expansions. The meeples of the Hirelings are super cute, but you can replace them with the corresponding faction figures. So you only need the printed cards. In my opinion, the Clockbots and Hirelings are unfortunately far too expensive for what they contain in the end.

Marauders Expansion if you don’t want bots. They will give you hirelings and 2 more militant factions to play with at 2. Hirelings help fill lower player counts. Watch my two player playthrough :)

Mauraders and hierelings before riverfolk since we usually play lower playercount. Exiles and partisans has always been out of print for me. Landmarks, vags and clockwork never really felt interesting to me for various obvious reasons for infrequent 2-4p games. :-(

Really don't think that the game is simple enough to just have a set order you can recommend for it. Different groups will have very different needs. As an example, Marauders is a very clear first buy if you're going to be playing in 2-player, even with the more complicated factions. I'd have to say that just presenting a tier list like this, even mentioning that a solo player should have different priorities, is a poor idea for a video. I wouldn't call it irresponsible since it's just a game, but presenting a buying order based on what you would want as a long-time player and authoritative figure in the scene, instead of just discussing what each offers and who might benefit from them, can definitely mislead people into purchases they might regret.

I explain each choice as cover them and say at the end that the order would change based on many things.. if you are a solo player or not etc. I said this is my list. And then at the end ask others what their lists are. No misleading here just positive vibes. And it seems you’re in the minority as the majority of the people here have found this interesting or helpful! People are always going to make purchases they regret. I am not the sole cause of that.
