Several months ago I had a root canal on a tooth that already had a crown, no previous root canal. For months it was uncomfortable to chew on it and now I can chew, although there is some feeling in it. No pain. I have already spoken with my oral surgeon and if I have pain, I will have it pulled and an implant. At my age, 77, I don't think I would have another root canal. My teeth must be brittle by now and I know there is an issue with bone. A couple of months ago I had an implant. No dental insurance. I just hope to outlive my teeth at this stage of the game. I had my first root canal at age 12 by a pioneer in the procedure. Back then it was done without any pain medication. Believe it or not, I still have that tooth 65 years later!

That is wonderful. Is the tooth a front tooth or a back molar? Front teeth have only one root and usually last longer. Molars have multiple roots and are more difficult to clean and break more easily.

Good info, doc. Even with the facts you present, this whole root canal vs. implant decision is so tough. Leaning toward extract and implant, because I have heart disease, and I suspect prior tooth infections/root canals may have been a factor... Seems that leaving a dead, slowly rotting tooth in place is not good for cardiac health.

Dr. Adams what do you think happens when a root canal you extract due to, say, tooth fracture, still looks clean in the root? Is it safe to assume those 'successes' haven't become problem systemic infections? I hear reports from assistants in dental offices that they see some 30 year old root canal extractions that look pristine and some on the opposite end and lots in between. Obviously I'd hope if I get one (deciding now) it would remain pretty clean looking. But do even those root canals cause infection to leach into the body that we can't see?
@SereneOrthodontics
@SereneOrthodontics 2 жыл бұрын
No doubt some look better and some look worse. The dental literature states only 97% of the root can be clean, so there is always some amount of infection. Sometimes people just go with an implant because they last longer than root canals

I have the option of getting a root canal, but the tooth may be too far gone. I have a huge cavity inside my upper back left molar tooth, reaching all the way to the root, which is infected. The tooth cracked because of bruxism and a cavity formed inside the crack. In order to prevent any future infection, I'm leaning towards fully removing the tooth, then getting an implant. The dentist gave me those two options but seemed more confident about extraction. If I were to get a root canal, it would involve multiple procedures, because the root is compromised. I assume that's why my dentist recommends extraction.

Hey,I have a crown on of the molar teeth and I recently was told that my tooth can be saved and I should get a root canal . Some people tell me implant is best but the implant it too expensive. Is root canals worth it? And also if you just get the tooth extracted, can you just not replace the tooth ? I was told that my teeth will shift if I don’t place a teeth there. Is that true?
@SereneOrthodontics
@SereneOrthodontics 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the teeth will shift if you do nothing. And yes the implant is more than saving with a root canal (3k vs 4k), but in the long run 3k + 4k is 7k because the root canal will last 5-10 years on the average and then you will need to get an implant.

I had a very large filling fall out and they are suggesting a root canal now, but I’m torn between getting an extraction and implant because of all the horror stories I’m hearing about bacteria leaking into the body now. But I asked my regular dentist about it and he’s saying they’re both good options, but root canal all the way. I had a failed root canal that was causing other issues in my body specifically in my throat that cleared up the day after I got the root canal fixed. Now I have another tooth that needs a root canal. The doctor said it’s more than worth saving I guess my question is what the hell should I do lol it’s one of my molars on the top back right second from last… consultations with holistic doctors out in California start at almost $300 and I’m super torn… I can pay 600 for the root canal. Or go to Mexico and stay with my girlfriends family and get an implant for two grand and have it last what I’m assuming would be a lifetime? I’m a healthy 35-year-old.

You could also get a denture. Flipper tooth. That's what I'll get for my extraction that I have for tomorrow. That way you don't spend that much on an implant in case you get it extracted. Just make sure the dentist you're visiting for extraction removes the PDL, removes any granulation tissue and has a centrifuge for PRF for better bone healing. If he has ozone as well that'd be also great. Which tooth did you extract that was giving you throat issues? Was it on the mandible or maxilla and did you have any other issues besides the throat stuff? Like Postural, balance or breathing?

Also I have some peridontal desease...how do you determine which approach to begin first?....I have a second infection on a tooth in back or next to a mid implant on upper...ill get the number of the tooth....thankyou..also the denist wants to pull a molar...Iam currently on antibiotics for the infection for the second time next to a recapped tooth just done that was not RC'd...

Elaine, you can look at this as an accountant or healthcare professional, but your best bet is to replace the tooth you describe with an implant. The initial success rate for root canal retreatments is not good and the long-term prognosis ofter is even worse. Many people feel like they threw good money at bad money when doing retreatments. The decision is yours so long as you have done your research.
