ROOT CELLAR BUILD - PUTTING UP THE WALLS AND BEAMS (EP 54)

In this video, I continue the root cellar build on my South Texas land. I'll be putting up the walls and laying down 8"x8' posts on top for support. Also laying down some 10 mil pond liner all over to aid in preventing leaks. Check it out!

If I may make one suggestion ! Cable your sides together ( from one corner to the other ) and use turn buckles to keep the tension ! Your going to have plenty of force inward but to keep it square ! Use the post away from your entrance on that corner . What are you going to do about snakes and scorpions ? I heard if nothing is on the ground ( no place to hide ) they will be easier to spot ! Maybe a thick layer of rocks or even concrete might work , I don’t know because I don’t have them here to worry about ! Lol. But on my barn I used cables to keep it square and it works great ! Nice looking so far and man BE CAREFUL! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Minnesota ! SKOL !

Thanks Dave! I'm way past that part of the build but good advice! Eventually the root cellar will be as tight as a house so snakes and scorpions won't be able to get in.

What is the purpose of a root cellar? To store food in ? Or a fall-out shelter in the event of a tornado ?

Some of my perishable food is getting too hot in the metal container above ground. It's like an oven during the summer which is not good for any kind of food. If you know South Texas, this place can be inhospitable to anything temperature sensitive. It can also serve as a fall out shelter as you mentioned.

@@24acresofparadise Thanks for the explanation. I haven’t been to Texas since the 80’s, but I really liked it while I was there in the hill country. ( I liked the Tex-Mex food , the climate and the hospitality) edited

My pleasure! Texas is a great place to live. I was born in Kingsville, TX and grew up in San Antonio. Tex-Mex food is a way of life LOL!!!
