Hello Kim! I haven't found a 100% accurate scientific explanation on ficus aerial roots so I will only answer based on my research and our experience. It's a bit complicated but I'll try to simplify it and keep it as short as possible. Aerial roots are sort of a coping mechanism of the ficus tree to get more water. When the roots in the ground are not supplying enough, the tree creates aerial roots where water is available. From our experience, this usually starts to happen when (1) the tree is root bound (2) the soil dries up fast. When that happens, the tree will develop aerial roots to get water somewhere else. But it will develop aerial roots only if there's water available in the air. That means, the air has to be humid. The climate in the Philippines is the perfect condition for this. Too hot to dry the soil and too humid for water to be available in the atmosphere. I may be wrong about all this but that's what I know and what makes sense to me. I will pin this question just in case there are other bonsai artists who can share a more accurate explanation than this. - Maki

Moss does not take nutrients from the soil, moss only absorbs a few particles that come with the air, it is not competing with the tree in any way. Moss does not even have real roots, those "proto roots" are not transporting nutirents at all. Ofc I am not an expert, so prove me wrong. Good content. How does Dodong make cut paste ?
@GCBonsai3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment. Yes, there's nothing to prove. That's why we emphasize the symbiotic relationship of the moss and tree, we just remove this time because this workshop will leave some open wounds to the tree due to removal of some roots. It is possible that moss can also be a holding ground for some fungi, bacteria and diseases and, sometime could cause rot. That's why we need a cut paste. Re: Cut paste - you can purchase online. In addition, we only add moss on penjing style and sometime on rock clinging style to hold the soil/medium and on during exhibition/show to add visual interest on the overall display. Thank you so much. Keep safe.
