Propagating these perennial shrubs with the 2 rooting methods shown in this video is very easy. With just a few rooted cuttings you can add these and other elegant and useful plants to your garden.
If you want to know more about the second rooting method (rooting in coco coir) check my other videos on rooting fig cuttings that give more information on how to prepare and use that excellent rooting medium.

Suggestion for you: Do the "cleanup" of the future cutting a couple of days ahead of separating it from the mother plant so it can heal. That way, when you separate it from the mother it will have minimal stress.

Once again, a simple and descriptive video from you. It might be nice to indicate as well, the average time taken for the rooting process. Thank you.

Thanks. Regarding the average rooting time, I had that information in my 'script' but, somehow, it got lost when doing the voice-over. In my non-heated greenhouse, it took more than 2 months for the cuttings to develop roots (that's why a few small shoots have grown inside the box). Whit warmer weather (in early spring) the rooting process will be much shorter (1 month or less is not uncommon).

@@JSacadura Thank you so much. I know how it must feel to lose one's 'script' - there are so many empty spaces in my planting diary! In my area it's a little difficult to get rooting hormones, so I've been forced to wait for natural rooting to take place. Back in the rainy season (we have dry, hot, and rainy), I rooted some cuttings in over a month, and others in exactly 22 days in soil in open air!

well , it is really nice to know that the leaves fall in winter (I didn't haha I thought it was just me doing something wrong)...I have a 3 year old plant that I just dug up and stuffed into a 3 gallon pot then soaked during below 0 C weather (I think it was me) haha...your videos are sure appreciated Friend...God bless...doug (Canada)

Hi, Doug. Its not you :-) In my area they lose all the leaves as soon as the colder winter nights start. They are quite sensitive to stress and might also lose the leaves when the roots are disturbed (by repotting, for instance).

Hello from the UK! I really want to propagate my lemon verbena from cuttings and found your video to be the best one (and only one who explicitly explains the process) on KZbin. When you talk about taking cuttings in December, I'd like to know which country you are based at for this? In December in the UK, there are no leaves on the bush at all (or they are very dry). So I just want to understand when is the best time for me to take the cuttings. Thank you for a wonderful video and your expertise!

Hi. I'm based in Portugal in zone 9a. Sometimes we have very mild winters so these plants may still have leaves in the winter. If they do not, its not a problem (just don't use cuttings that are dry, they must be green at the cut point).

@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын

I have Lemon Verbena in pot (zone 8). I use it for tea (together with stevia). Never tried with cuttings in winter so I'll try to propagate it now just for fun. Can we also propagate other shrubs with winter cuttings like pomegranate or feijoa?
@JSacadura
@JSacadura 4 жыл бұрын
The reason i start my cuttings in my greenhouse in the winter, is that, with these type of plants, i like that the cutting still has a few leaves. If i wait until early spring, the tree won't have any,as they all fall in my area due to the cold. When maintaining a constant temperature indoors the roots will develop well and the new plants can be planted in the soil the next spring. Feijoa is a bit harder to root but it can be done, preferably using bottom heat, although air layering is another good option (it can take several months though, but it will start producing much earlier). Regarding pomegranate, i never tried rooting, as i prefer to graft them to a suitable rootstock that can survive in my clay based soil.
@gvidoogorevc8168
@gvidoogorevc8168 4 жыл бұрын
I tried air layering with your method. Roots formed on both feijoa and pomegranate but the substrate was too wet so roots roted. Well, we learn from mistakes. Sorry for off topic. Tips on Lemon Verbena still have some leaves so I'll try to propagate it now. Tnx for another great video!

Why does yours look like that? Needs fertiliser. Mine looks amazing but still getting a few yellow yellow leaves. When I potted it up in a self watering pot it exploded. First year growing it. Will it start looking like yours. I've been staying fairly regular with the fert as it responds very well.
