The "problem" is. Auxines are for callus, rooting *and* inhibit sprouting near the root. You just got one nodium with nearly no cytokinine in it but masses of auxines. As long their is no sprouting, the roots grow until there are no more nutrients. This one leave did enough photosynthesis for keeping the roots alive but not for growing a new sprout. And it struggeled to form enough cytokinines what is needed for sprouting, because the relation of auxin and cytokinine "decides" what becomes a root and what becomes a sprout. Hope, it explains a little bit why your treatet cuttings grow slower than the untreatet. It´s just an imbalance of opposite phytohormones. And sorry for my bad english. I´m german and wrote this without a propper dictionary...😉

I suspect this is a case of auxin overdose. Philodendron photosynthesizes year-round, continuously displaying phototropism (auxin produced at apical shoot radiates down trunk). Short cuttings, like in this video, immediately grow new roots without need for root hormone. The auxin produced at an apical shoot won't have far to travel to stimulate root growth. I came across this video when looking to see if anyone uses philodendron as a source for auxin, since many people have it in their home. I think the result might be different if tested on something that would have large losses without intervention, like grapes from fruit or scions with closed buds and no foliage.

This is such a great video idea! Thank you for the dedication to a 7month long video haha Could you do an experiment of testing rooting cuttings in water with and without fertilizer? I’ve seen people advise you to put some liquid fertilizer in your water props to make them grow faster, but idk if it works!

Thanks for the follow up, I’m sure it takes a lot more effort and time for you to make. The follow up is something not a lot of other plant youtubers do. You have such a unique style, which I really appreciate! If you take any request: I heard (in a planter in a vide) that putting a pothos cutting with some other water propagations, make it root faster/better. I tried to research this, but I didn’t get any explanation for this. Would you know why this could happen? I’m sorry for any mistakes, English is not my first language!

I’m not sure if it’s the same for every type of RH, mine has instructions for transplanting cuttings to soil by watering the soil with a more diluted mixture of RH and water until the plant is fully established. It could be that sudden reduction of RH from the RH induced root growth might have stunted root development.

That's a really interesting point. I water propogated some spider plants. When I repotted them, one of the plants went into a 50/50 soil-water mix, which I keep at 50/50. The other two plants went into just soil (I water these normally). The plant with the 50/50 is doing SO much better - the leaves are 3x the length of the regular soil plants, and they are a much deeper green.

Hi there Mr Techplant 😊 I have learned that the whiter or lighter the roots, the healthier is the plant. I think that the roots on the plant with hormones look healthier than the plant without (which also has a fungus on one of the leaves). For the first time, I will try that same product on some hydrangea cuts, so thanks for your video!

the rooting hormone is for plants you grow from leaves and patial leaves like Sansevieria or Ficus benjamina not so much for plants that produce air roots and baby plants on their own like for example Epipremnum aureum, Hedera helix or Chlorophytum comosum And yes i had to google the names since i only know the german names not the international/latin ones and yes technicly the first two do ptoduce roots but not while still being on the plant the sansevieria you can cultivate by cuting a leave in some big chunks letting dry out the edges abit and potting them into soil the ficus can grow roots from the green plant stemp where the leave is attachted to the tree and those are the two kinds you want root groth hormones on to assure the survival so why dont you try the experiment on those two

Yes I like the experiment . I m watching your channel to learn about softwood cutting though I have been primarily doing unsuccessful hard wood cuttings . I use that rooting hormone that you used . In hard wood cuttings it seem to be absolutely useless yet it has the same amount of hormone as the highly touted Colonex brand .03 % hormone. So I'm going to go with that worthless rooting hormone in water propagation of hard wood cuttings in hopes that initial rooting develops sooner .hardwood cutting in soil or sand or perlite rot way too fast and I'm hoping that quick root development will prevent the rotting . Using water propagation which doesn't rot the bark and kill the cuttings

The mint in fertilizer grew so many roots in just a week! But here, with root hormone, it seems it gives a boost as long as the plant is kept in the hormone. Afterwards, it seems it balances off.

El h also, I have a new video suggestion, I’m still debating whether soil is better than moss propagation or vice versa. I see all these nurseries and tutorials on how to propagate, and they all have success with soil. Can you try soil propagation again? 😅 maybe with a chunkier more aerated mix. Try adding coconut cubes, more perlite, pumice and other aeration amendments. Hope you can consider this, thanks!
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 3 жыл бұрын
I think something that helps them is the watering cycle is super consistent ( on a timer ) and they have the sun, the sun has UV rays that kill bacteria/viruses and other crap which i think helps the soil be really really healthy. I bet it works fine. Also I think they avoid moss because its a lot more expensive to use. I will try again

@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 3 жыл бұрын
So im not an expert with this, I havent experimented with this at all either, BUT for the last maybe 6 months what ive been doing is mixing in small amounts of fertilizer into my watering can. I use MAXSEA 16:16:16 its a general fertilizer and i always use way less that it tells you too lose to avoid over fertilizing. I think there must be much better and knowledgable people on youtube that can talk way more about this. I dont want to steer you in the wrong direction. But I think youd be safe with just about any fertilizer as long as you are doing half strength

@@jacksemple2061 Normally a cheap N-P-K fertilizer will work, if you repot your plants from time to time. But if you don`t want to repot your plants or grow them in hydroculture, you can work with trace element fertzilizer too. And it is really helpfull to use less than it´s told, like Techplant said. For orchids and cacti you should use spezial fertilizer with less N and more P.

Thanks for the update. I will be saving myself some money on the powder hormone since I do most of my propagation in water. The root ball of the plain water one definitely was much better and healthier. I wonder if it would have been different if you had put rooting hormone on the roots again when you potted them up if they would have been healthier in the long run. The top growth was definitely very similar. I couldn't see much difference. Now that the plants are together, it will be interesting to see if you can tell the difference between the two later on or if the healthy ones will help the weaker ones catch up. I was wondering if you have tried to do the experiment with Clonex? I'm going to try on a couple props to see if it helps next time I get a couple of the same things.

Really interesting results! I just found you channel so I'm kind of new here but I was just wondering if you had any formal background in plant sciences? I'm not done with my botany degree yet but from my understanding of root hormones they signal the creation of new root tissue, not the expansion and maturation of old root tissue. Correct me if I'm wrong there, but that might be why the rooting hormone treatment caused more skinnier roots, while the control group developed less roots that became more developed. The hormone treatment might have been diverting resources from root maturation to new root development, causing more roots of lesser quality.

I like your approach but you need to be a little bit more rigorous about confounding variables. Pothos is known to be very easy to propagate, so you cannot extrapolate about the usefulness of rooting hormone based on this one experiment. You need to repeat it with a plant that is known to be hard to propagate. And ideally with a plant that is somewhere in the middle. I also have a problem with another one of your videos that I saw recently where you compare cutting with razors scissors and pliers. I think it was a failure not to include pruning shears. For that video I think you also need to be careful not to overstate the significance of small differences. These comments are not meant to be negative. Just observations I think you need to take into account to make your experiments even more valuable. Keep up the good work.
