Rooting reflex response in a newborn infant (baby). When performing pediatric nursing assessments, you can assess the newborn's rooting reflex.
The rooting reflex occurs when an object such as a finger touches the side of the baby's face. During the rooting response, the infant will turn his or her head toward the finger while opening the mouth. Thus, this reflex is very useful in helping the infant latch onto it's food source (nipple of a bottle or breast).
This reflex tends to disappear around four months of age.
