I litterally had no idea about the swings & sleepers, thank goodness I learned about this right before having our 1st baby in a few weeks. My friends used to always use sleepers & swings to let their babies sleep in another room, while they went off & did other stuff in another room. If the baby fell asleep in a stroller or carseat they would just leave them in it, as if it was buying them more time of peace & quiet. Thanks to this video I will easily remember "No chin to chest"

This was a big surprise to me! I had my first child 16 years ago and we let her sleep in her cat seat and swing all. the. time! I had no idea that it was so dangerous! I'm so glad to have learned this, as I am 10 weeks away from giving birth to my son, my 2nd child (3rd pregnancy, 2nd birth)! Thank you for sharing!

My little one is so noisy when he sleeps. Somehow i've now learned to filter out his 'not awake noises' when i'm asleep and now pretty much only wake up with his awake cry or any strange new noise (like a cough or soemething). It's crazy what our brains can do and i'm so bloody gratefull for it. I do agree with the fact that swaddling/sleepsacks and an empty crib are best for babies saftey. But that isnt possible with every baby. My little one needs a special medical pillow and for quite a while would only sleep next to me in his nest. Sometimes you've just gotta do what you gotta do.

Great videos! The only one I do not agree with is the Purple crying. Not all babies go through it. My second one briefly cried the first 2 weeks after birth before going to sleep before we figured out the reason, which was being overly tired. There is usually a reason to purple crying that can help but parent do not always find out what the reason is.

Agree. Third time mom and we only had it briefly with our first until we realised he was overtired from not having napped enough during the day. My theory is that this is usually the case, as new parents underestimate the number of hours of sleep babies need.

The info on Tummy Time was really helpful. We were asked by our doctors to wait until the umbilical stump falls off before laying the baby on the ground. But, like you said here, it doesn't have to be on the floor in the beginning. I've already wasted a week, so I'll start tomorrow after a (hopefully) good night's rest.

Expecting our second in a few weeks. The burping tips reminded me that my first would almost all the time fall asleep while breastfeeding, no way I would get a burp out of him. I would lay him down and if he'd wake up some time after, fussing or crying, I would try to burp him then. And that was usually what he needed. Thanks for the reminder 😅

Wow, I didn't know that pacifiers are useful like that! That might sound stupid, but I've kind of always thought that people who give their babies pacifiers just want to shut them up, and it must not be very good for them. (I'm young and don't have kids, I don't really know these things yet) I'm glad to learn that it's a useful self-soothing tool that's actually fine for them.

Hello I would like to correct you about baby caring. The back must be supported to be in C position, other way is it very bad for the spine, so that the vertebrae do not press againts other. So no stuffed or hard back of the carrier, the best thing for newborns are stretchy scarf made for babywearing. Other rule is M position for legs and the fabric must be from knee to knee.
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Hi Dagmar, according to Red Nose Australia and the American Academy of Pediatrics when baby wearing a baby's body should not be curled or slumped (C-position) so that baby's chin is forced to baby's chest as this may restrict breathing.

My 2nd baby didnt (I kept waiting for it but it just never happened) and when i asked a large mums Facebook group many mums also said that their babies didn't have this ceying period either. Just wanted to put it out there so that new mums don't stress and assume the worse and everyone kept telling me it was coming....and it never did! Lucky me!! ❤

That’s great. For some bubs this period is just when the bub is a bit more fussy then usual. So not necessarily crying but just a bit more restless than usual - preferring to be held and maybe having shorter naps and feeding more often.

Hi Emma - new subscriber here! This video is exactly what I needed! I've had so many unanswered questions with my 1st baby who's 3 weeks old- especially the burping dilemma! I breastfeed and she falls asleep but then I'm up for ages trying to burp her- by then she's wide awake. Is it safe to babywear with a sling for newborns? Full term. I'm finding she's on me all day and doesn't settle in the moses basket during the day. She wants to be held all the time. And I love it but need my hands free - ive been told to put her down but can't get myself to do it as she starts crying. Any tips on that. Thanks again x

Hi Emma, thank you for yet another educational video. On the topic of sleep, my baby my is 3 months old, he never liked being swaddled since birth. Is there any alternative to stop/reduce moro reflex so he won’t wake himself up? Also, since it’s recommended that the baby’s crib must be free of loose blankets, in cold weather conditions, how do you keep baby warm at night without swaddling?
@natdugdale3625
@natdugdale3625 Жыл бұрын
Baby sleeping bags along with a long sleeve sleepsuit underneath are good to keep baby warm without loose blankets!
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Great question! At 3 months of age the startle reflex should be reducing if it hasn't already stopped. If your little one still experiences the startle reflex then you can reduce the likelihood of triggering it by using a white noise machine (as this will mask sudden loud noises which triggers the startle reflex) and when moving your baby try and do it slowly and with smooth movements, as limiting big sudden movements will reduce the chances of your baby startling. In regards to keeping them warm without using blankets sleeping bags (where the arms are free) are a great solution. Make sure you check out the TOG rating of the sleeping bags to ensure you choose one which is suitable for the room temperature. I hope that helps!

Hey there! So, I'm a new dad and I'm kind of trying to figure out this whole baby thing. My 3-week-old daughter is giving me a run for my money, especially when it comes to her crying and squirming in her bassinet. Swaddling seems to be a big no-no for her, as she constantly fights to break free and ends up crying even more. I wonder if it's because she's in REM sleep? Can you tell me what signs to look out for to know if she's crying because she actually needs something? Should I give her a little time to see if she settles down and goes back to sleep? Appreciate any advice!

as a new mom, i too thought that it is a must to burp a baby, and get anxious when my daughter doesn’t. after some time, i realise that that is perfectly fine (i do get her in burping position for a few mins just to get the milk down tho)! in fact, most of the time she’d get too drowsy after a feed that she’ll fall asleep BEFORE i could even try to burp 😂
@EmmaHubbard
@EmmaHubbard Жыл бұрын
Exactly, they are often drowsy or asleep after a feed and burping can actually wake them back up and then you need to settle them back to sleep again. If the bub doesn't get fussy or unsettled when they don't get burped it can make the process a whole lot easier and quicker.

Hi Emma, i delivered via c-sec at 37 weeks.. my daughter now nearing 4 weeks from week 2 sleeps a few hours during night and is unable to sleep during day. I live in a huge household and everyone wants to play with her leaving her stimulated throughout the day. It’s difficult to explain to them to leave the baby alone, since her sleep hours only range from 5 to 9 hours in 24 hours only. Please suggest what to do? Is this much sleep enough for a newborn? It’s been 3 weeks since she slept properly during the day. Also daylight does not help much.
@LC-vr6kq
@LC-vr6kq Жыл бұрын
You should consider blackout blinds. A completely pitch black room, with no lights from monitors, aircon/heaters, toys etc will help your baby sleep during the day. White noise will also help block out the noise from the household. Good luck!

Thank you for the great video! I've only a few more days of pregnancy to go, and I'm a bit worried now about the car seat, as it attaches to the stroller (the stroller bed is flat, but it says it's for children of six months of age). Would it be ok to take baby for walks in the car seat/stroller, or should I avoid it as much as possible?
@maddythelion
@maddythelion 3 ай бұрын
Guessing you've figured this out now but I'm replying for the benefit of others. I think it's fine as long as you're supervising them, they're awake and they're not in it for more than an hour or so at a time (less if it's very hot out). The worst case scenario is that they fall asleep in the car seat and you're not watching them.

Honestly at this point with all the risks and warnings I have no idea how I will be able to look after my baby. How does everyone do it? How do you keep them alive?

I think about all the super dumb people I know with kids who have lived through infancy. Gives you some perspective on how critical some of the warnings are.. guarantee they didn't do everything perfectly.

My newborn (2 weeks old) likes to be burped and fusses if I don't burp him. He always settles down and will often fall asleep when I'm burping him.

We are first time parents and we noticed that our newborn hates being swaddled moreover it stimulates him and cannot be soothed 😢 he is also unsettled when he pees on his nappy hence needs changing which stimulates him too. Any tips? 😢😅😢😢

It’s ok to not swaddle your baby swaddling is great IF your baby enjoys it but if your baby doesn’t like it there no reason to try to force them into swaddling Not liking sitting in his own pee sounds normal I probably wouldn’t like sitting in a dirty diaper either

Can the swadle suffocate the baby?

If it doesn’t fit the baby well (if it’s a sleep sack type one and is the wrong size) or isn’t tight enough/put on right (if it’s a swaddle blanket that hasn’t been put on right or if your baby is able to wiggle themselves out of it) yes they can But if used/done correctly they’re safe

Hi! What makes you say that? I am considering the doona
@BrittanyJ-d5x
@BrittanyJ-d5x 9 ай бұрын
@@Iamjessicakouassi it's recommended not to place an infant car seat on the ground because it's unsafe for baby to stay in due to the angle and neck position. I learned a bit more about this since commenting, and it's likely that if the legs of the doona are out, the carseat should be at the correct angle with the ground, as it would be when properly installed in the car

first time mom. My baby’s grandparents keep doing wrong and sometimes very dangerous behaviors to my child assuming they’re bonding with and intertaining her. When I ask them not to, they give me sarcastic gestures and make fun of me as if I’m a lunetic or obsessive person. Its making me so much tired and frustrate

I thought pacifier wasn't ideal for babies because of teeth growing wrong and some difficulties it may cause on sucking breasts. There wasn't a study for that?

Nursing in those same situations has all of the benefits of the pacifier and none of the drawbacks (bacteria, dental issues, etc). Pacifier is a legitimate parenting choice for sure, but breastfeeding also solves all of those problems.
