Thanks for the video! I work at a hardware store that re-keys residential lock sets and a customer lost all of their original keys. It was a wave/lever style Schlage brand entry knob. I made up a Schlage bump key (pin # 9 for future reference) and was able to pop it after several attempts, saving the customer from buying a $40 knob. Good info, added to favorites.

Put an o-ring around the key right where it goes into the lock to keep a constant space. Then you don't have to pull it out a little bit every time. You can just keep pushing and tapping with the screwdriver and it's about three times quicker.

For the naysayers, if you don't like this information being out there, look at it this way. If more people understood how easily most locks are defeated, we might actually have higher grade locks available at our local Lowe's or Home Depot. As it is, a kwikset can be defeated in seconds. My doorframe was stronger than my deadbolt was.

I have been a locksmith for 15 years, And I can tell you key bumping is not that simple. You have to take into consideration a few things . Such as condition ,the age and the depth of the pins in the lock. All the locks I've seen so far are new lock. Let's see an older lock or one that hasn't been maintained being "bumped". And as it has been said before every locksmith that has demonstrated lock bumping should be put out of business !!! Your job is securing property not undermining it !!!
@Rootjunkycom6 жыл бұрын
I agree there are differences in locks for sure but even a old lock can be cleaned up with a little liquid graphite. :-) Also if a locksmiths job is to secure property then they should come up with a better lock that cant be opened this easily and put kwikset and schlage out of business. So yeah good luck with that. lol

@@Rootjunkycom came here to say this. Personally ive found old locks that havent been lubed much easier though, using jigglers at least.

Just a little tip, if you want to avoid having to constantly pull the key out you could put a small rubber o ring over the key to make it only needed to apply pressure forward and then releasing when you do not succeed. It make the time to get into the lock cut down by a very large portion for me personally usually took me about 3 to 7 minutes to get into my test lock then after the o ring probably about 30 seconds or less.
@mikesimms452510 жыл бұрын
Please explain exactly where you put the O ring. Is it around the key and up against the plug so as to keep it from slipping in all the way? Or is it something else? Thanks
@DemonikNord10 жыл бұрын
Its the way you would normally think, It goes around the key on the end that connects to the plug. you can do the same thing with a rubber band if you cant find an O ring to use

Put a rubber washer to fit the shoulder of the key. Now you don't have to pull the key out each whack, does it so automatically and makes it easier because you can keep whacking the key very quickly and don't put a lot of tension on it. Lets you catch a couple pins each whack until they all get caught.

@peterdambra63879 жыл бұрын
@Channel1images. I have 2 points to make about your comment. First point is my point that the lock shown in the video is not a Schlage lock. Just some common Chinese cheapo lock with a SC1 keyway. Second. Schlage locks start at around $25 not $14. Panicking people into needlessly replacing their locks is not a service. As a professional locksmith I can tell you lock bumping is not a widespread problem, in fact it's pretty rare I say. These so called informational videos are far more dangerous.
@aprilabron87117 жыл бұрын
Not sure if this info is correct or not. But, it does not matter if you go to the hardware store to buy locks or if there is a locksmith (professional) who is contracted to do the work especially if the professional changed the locks, but you are still able to unlock your lock with a key that can unlock the common area door

You don't have to sand down the tip and shoulders, if you have the valleys of the bump key in line with the pins when the key is fully inserted then you just pull the key one pin length out from there and bump it in from that position and it will do the same
@christopherlawler30339 жыл бұрын
I have gone through the trouble to make my locks secure against this form of attack: (1.) By using locking cylinders or cores that use a proprietary or restricted and patent protected Keyway cross section that is sanctioned from commercial distribution... (2.) A hybrid locking technology that also uses Fingerpins and a sidebar - such as ASSA, Schlage (Everest) Primus XP or the Scorpion CX-5. (3.) Modifications to the pin tumbler section of the Schlage Primus by replacing the driver pins with spool security driver pins of various lengths (to accommodate the bitting depths of the key) which is also recommended by Schlage, as they've clearly written the correct procedures for rekeying a standard cylinder in their standard cylinder service manual. - Except Schlage does not use any security pins whatsoever in their locks that are keyed to factory specifications. A standard 5 pin Obverse "C" Keyway Cross Section is the most common Schlage style Keyway Cross Section in use today - as it was first introduced in 1935. The Schlage obverse "C" and the Kwikset "KW1" Keyway Cross Sections are the most prolific and most imitated or cloned lock styles in the U.S. domestic consumer market - and in my opinion, doesn't offer ANY real security. These consumer grade 5-pin tumbler locks are NOT high security locks and should NOT be used or considered for protecting high value targets.

@christopherlawler30338 жыл бұрын
Obviously, you don't have any clues as to how high security locking cylinders and locking hardware are graded. Also, hollow metal doors and frames are obviously more secure than the cheap wood framed "metal clad" doors that they sell at the popular "big box" home improvement store chains. Hollow metal doors and frames are the commercial standard and using solid wood slab doors in conjunction with the hollow metal frames is popular for commercial interior doors as found in schools, hospitals, and other institutional buildings. The correct combination of doors, frames and good hardware is the solution for an adequate level of physical security that most often is the first (and sometimes the only) level of defense against intrusion, invasion, burglary or theft. andersonlock.com is one resource for commercial grade doors, frames and all associated hardware (hinges, locking hardware, cylinders, restricted and high security locking cylinders and keys that have restricted or commercially sanctioned keys or key profile cross-sections that aren't available in the open commercial channels of merchandise distribution to the general public without a required rigid system of formalities or protocols that are intended to ensure authentication of ownership or authorisation to ensure that restricted or sanctioned materials only are accessed or accessible by only the people who have a legal entitlement to them and not the general public. This generally means some sort of a form, facesheet, letter or letters of authorization concerning a product order for a specific end-user or their particular installation facility or facilities of which establishes effective proof of authenticity or ownership; often by comparison of handwriting and/or signatures, alongside with a validated address for a direct drop-shipment from the factory to the end-user or their authorised or designated agent or agents. This way, it becomes more difficult for the wrong people to obtain key blanks or cylinders for that particular installation or facility.

VERY NICE JOB ON THIS VIDEO. The one addition I would add is to tell us that you are wrongly pressure TURNING the bump key with your left hand thumb clockwise at the 3:05 mark while striking the key. You then are shown correctly pressure TURNING the key COUNTER-CLOCKWISE with your left hand index finger at the 3:25 mark. The trick is that you have to be "TURNING" THE KEY AT THE SAME TIME AS YOU STRIKE IT WITH THE SCREWDRIVER.

Try sliding small rubber "O" ring on the bump key, so it sits between the key shoulder and the lock. Something with a thickness of around 1.5 mm and an un-stretched internal diameter of around 5mm should do the trick. Makes positioning the key much easier, whilst adding a bit of "springiness" to things. Means you can concentrate on turning the key. Also makes the task a little quieter too. Obviously, only use this on locks for which you have the lock-owner's permission, bla bla... ;-)

when you bump the key you give it enough force to make the pins jump a bit, if you time it right you can turn it when the pins jump to align with the shear line.

Basically the pins all fall halfway & are knocked like the sheer line which is why it has to be the highest cut.

Hello, Rootjunk, could you please give me a few pointers? I made the key. I looked at your Schlage bump key, and others online and put my key on top, the notched or valleys seem to be in the right spots. They at least line up with your key (I copied the picture, zoomed to the same size, and put my key over it). It is a Schlage number combination lock. The key goes in with the shaft to the right and the teeth, notched or what ever it is called, to the left, so side ways, not up and down. When I insert the key I can feel, and even hear 5 springs, or pins. My key is a C, and the outside opening looks almost like a Z. The key goes in easily, but there is a bounce to it. When I insert it, it bounces just a bit back out. The lock hasn't been used often with a key, mainly, or only operated with the number combination, but the battery is empty. When I try to bump it I put pressure on the left, counter clockwise, to unlock. I tried the back of a screw driver, a small hammer, even a bigger hammer. How hard do I have to hit the thing? Do I try to turn it the right way? Any tips you can give me on how to open that lock? (And please don't say to get a locksmith. The local guy is a real idiot! Last time we took a lock there to get keys for it he forgot to put a piece back in. Somebody else in the shop found the piece and in the end we got it to work but we had to drive the 15 miles 3 times to get the lock to work.) Thank you in advance!

@buggsy55 жыл бұрын
Don't get new locks, just have a decent locksmith make the cylinders pick/bump resistant. There is a good chance your rental was being entered by some other method, such as slipping the latch on a door or window. Or it might be a previous tenant who has a key and you didn't change the lock bitting when they left. By the way, robbers seldom pick/bump locks. They force entry using faster methods like kicking open a door or breaking a window. Lock picking is one method used by those that do not want to cause physical damage to the lock.
