I simply love watching your videos. I am in the UK and have just bought a new home with enough room to grow enough for us to get close to being self sufficient on seasonal veg. The whole place is grass at the moment though so the first stage is clearing the ground of the many many many small ornamental trees that were planted here so I can make veg beds in the full sun at the back of my house. We will be replacing the ornamental trees with fruit trees and edible hedges. Your videos are a real inspiration, you are a window into another world that i am never going to be able to visit but somehow the things you talk about have a real resonance with me xxx

Love the part about the potatoes! 😅 Here, in Sweden, potatoes are kind of mandatory 🤓 since we have a shorter season for growing, and have to store a lot of food through hard winters, we need low maintenance plants that can give us a big harvest. Potatoes are the best! 🇸🇪🌱

My dear most of us don't know what we are doing in our gardens, I am a master gardener with years of gardening in a warmer climate. I moved to a coastal cooler climate at the lower Pacific Northwest where the Redwoods meet the Ocean so I had to learn all over again. Through trial and error we learn and then we get a stranger than the normal season and it throws us off but we continue to grow and learn. This is my first summer growing potatoes, yams, garlic, and onion and I am like a new gardener all over again, it just shows me that I will never know it all and that is exciting to me, the garden continues to teach me. I had some seed packets give me something different than what was listed, my cantaloupes turned out to be butternut squash and my snow peas were instead the pea shelling Wando and my Dill package gave me fennel. What are the odds of that many seed packages giving me something different! I needed my dill to be Dill for pickle making so I bought another package of Dill from a different seed company and now my Dill is Dill, so funny how that happens. God bless you dear little sister in Christ may your garden continue to be a blessing to you and your family.

Love your videos Jess! Some random things about potatoes - and I like your set up for them. Potatoes like acidic soil - so if you haven't already done so, some research on that would be good. I plant mine with peat moss (I know, it's an unsustainable choice but I haven't found a better one - it doesn't take very much for each plant). Once the plant dies back the tubers won't grow in size. I think you want main season varieties that grow quite tall (mine are now 3 feet tall and will likely grow at least another 12 to 18 inches). Good air circulation around the plant is important - just like tomatoes - they are relatives. So don't plant them too close together. They like fairly rich, well draining soil to grow in. Kept evenly moist but not soggy. Hope this helps a bit!

Mint water reminded me that I had an amazing sweet basil that was going gangbusters, one day I jammed a stalk with about a dozen leaves into my water bottle and it was delicious. Made the water taste bright and sweet while adding a cooling flavor, I just topped the water off all day and 4 liters later it was still tasty. Definitely a fan of adding some fresh soft herbs into my water, anything that makes the water more attractive than sweet and caffeine beverages, especially on the ridiculously hot days... Hope your 2020 garden is going well.

I just read "The Quarter-Acre Farm" by Spring Warren. I think you might like it, she sort of did what you're doing. Anyhow, in the book she talks about all the mistakes she made with potatoes, mentioning that they are pretty counterintuitive if you're used to growing tomatoes. They don't like hot weather, basically anything over 70F, and you need to wait for the foliage to die off completely, and if you want to store them long term, wait a little longer after that. I've been loving your videos. Thanks for making them!

There is a netting/fencing you can get and add a charge to to keep out the critters. It doesn't hurt them bad, just enough that they don't like it. You do need to post on the fence that it is electrified, so that people have a warning. Read up on it. It might be your answer to forest critters, not only for the garden but if you're going to have animals (chickens or such) it can help keep predators away as well.

Here in England runner beans are pretty much a staple for all growers (probably, as you say because of our cooler temps here) however, they're VERY heavy feeders they like A LOT of constant water - just an idea to maybe get them going again. P.s I love your garden tours it's my weekly treat

Better yet add those shells to brown rice vinegar and let it bubble till it stops and that liquid is instantly available calcium. Dr. Cho Korean natural farming recipe. That book will save you money on plant food and help you learn to ferment plant and fruit juice for soil food.

@@MatanuskaHIGH could you use apple cider vinegar instead of brown rice vinegar and if not where can I get it or how can I make it...thanks for your comment 😁

Sarah Larson you can download the pdf Korean natural farming by Dr. Cho online it goes more in depth on fermenting plants and eggshells and fish for fertilizer. I’m not 100% sure about cider vinager but I imagine it would as it’s an acid. The calcium carbonate needs the acid to break down and balance the PH which I think cider vs rice vinager would both do the same thing.

So happy I stumbled across your channel. I'm a passionate gardener and aspiring homesteader. I love to learn and share what I learn as well. Working to create my own information outlet and this video is what I've imagined doing myself. Whether I ever get the time and courage to create content is anyone's guess but I will definitely be following your videos! Great work.

I once had a spot where the plants kept dying and it was only that one spot. Everything put there turned yellow and died. then I was sitting outside having a yard sale. All day. It was a neighbor's dog that I noticed then. She was always peeing in the same place and it caused those plants to die. So, I quit planting in that particular spot :-)

I love your videos. They are a perfect combination of relaxed exploring and interesting educational. And I think it's fun watching you garden not knowing what you are doing (as you say). We ALL don't know what we are doing at one time or another so it's easy for us to all identify with that. It's refreshing.

I absolutely loved this video. I am watching KZbin videos to learn what gardening is about because I’ve never done it and I really appreciated your potato debacle because it shows that gardening is imperfect. Imperfection in tutorials is necessary. Thank you for sharing. You seem like such a nice, genuine person.

R&RF::::::::::::::::::::::: What is a ground cherry? I want oneeeeee!!!!!! Bad! LOL AND read on using flowers as natural ways to get rid of pests!!! You know, like putting tomatoes with Marigolds because tomato worms hate the smell of marigolds...works, too!!!!!!!!!! My great grandmother never has bugs but, she plants certain flowers near her veggies. I'm always learning things from her about it but, read about it. The old folks did it. LOL

Love this video! The tires are so cute! Watching everything come together i love it! I like to recycle stuff but my husband struggles he doesn't see the end result or what you can create. I want to have a cup of coffee in your garden lol I look forward to your videos and all the knowledge you share. I will start more from seed next year thanks to you I'm feeling more confident. We will also try more tomatoes since my husband and i are not tomato people. I think it's texture plus i never think they taste good. However a few years ago i did a huge garden and i really liked the purple tomatoes and tomatillos... i didn't share lol So i think we need to grow a variety and see what we like. I love making salsa and canning life just got crazy...oh i miss it! next year i will be back in business i keep reminding myself we are starting from scratch it won't happen over night. This year the focus is horse barn, waterlines, fences and boxes. We are also going to do a area with back to eden method. We are heavy clay soil full sun and hot summers no rain. Mild winter no snow and swiss chard grows year round for me. I'm interested in what you are planning for fall crop? I will be ready to plant a decent fall garden. I do have a squash, a zucchini, peppers, beans, strawberries, herbs just a few things very pathetic but with lots of flowers. I love flowers just sad i don't have much veggies this season. I planted some rosemary last week and this fall planning on a dozen fruit trees and table grapes. I have a vision and i will get there. Have a blessed Sunday

I don't know if someone else has suggested this, but here are the tips we used last year and we got a good harvest! Cut your seed potato (or potatoes) into pieces with 2 eyes on each piece, then space them out in your box. You'll get a few potato plants that way. Burry them every few weeks as they grow - every time you burry the plant, they shoot off new roots that create new potatoes! Don't burry them completely. Leave a few inches of the plant sticking out. Harvest when the plant is completely dead, not only "dying off". Good luck next year!

Would you please show us how you use a UV light at night to look for tomato hornworms, etc? I never heard of that idea before and searched on youtube but really can't see anything thorough. I have a tough time finding hornworms even though I'm following their poop so would love to see how well a UV light works for that. Thank you SO MUCH if you do that.
