Today, my friend and I are doing some direct sowing in the raised beds for the fall garden. Many of you have asked to see exactly how we do this, so here is your chance!
I showed you my seed spacing ruler, which I got at the dollar spot at Target in Spring. I did a search online and found this one (which is longer and nicer than the one I use) at Gardeners Supply Co, which is a company I have shopped with multiple times and I trust.

What a sweetie!! I am originally from Arkansas too (Fort Smith) and my grandmother and great grandma had a very large garden for years! How sweet that you are encouraging this little girl to really get into gardening. You have made an impression on her that I am sure she will treasure for years!

Equidistant spacing works best in raised beds. after the first row the next row is on a diagonal from the first row. Like the squares on a checker board.

What an adorable helper! It's like that saying " you give a man a fish he eats for a day." Teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime". Just as you are teaching this child how to eat for the rest of her life! That's something she wont forget! They may not be grateful now, but you are Instilling this into your kids and its literally a gift and a blessing. I recall the people who have taken the time to teach me something when I was a child and I never forgot.

Instead of numbering, I have named each of our garden beds...Harry Potter themed :) this way I get to send the kids to Gringotts or Diagon Alley and so on...lol. I am using a graphing notebook this year for my journal; I'm lovin the grids for drawing out my beds. Great work in the garden Nariah (sp)!

I did this when my kids were little too! We did a Charlotte's Web area (where we planted what that animal would eat, or what plant would invite the right bug for Charlotte to eat ie., beneficial bugs), a name the bible books area ( we looked for plants mentioned in that book and planted them), and a "wise woman tradition, SUSAN WEED and Native American garden ( where "weeds", trees, and mushrooms, all medicinal were planted). My kids loved the Susan Weed/Native American garden the best, because now they can forage and spread the word on what plants aide in keeping you healthy! Inadvertently they learned what each plant looked like and it's Latin name and it's PURPOSE here on earth.

My kids learned the bible books quick and they learned to "think" about how the books they chose to read could pertain to God's grace and imperfections in the garden. It was the most powerful thing I did "Accidentally " as a parent! Lol, Kind of like all the accidents that happen in the Garden that turn out to be special Gifts!

Its so nice that you teach your friends child as well. The more kids learn to garden, where foods come from and how much work it involves and how rewarding it is, the more these children will nake the future brighter for more people. Many thumbs up from Sweden. I have no clue why anyone would give it a thumbs down.

Daniel's music goes so well with your videos, tell him "Thank You" from all of us... Noriah did a good job :) My neighbor's daughter, now 8, has been an occasional helper of mine for a few years so this year her step dad and I built her a 3 x 6 raised bed. I put my remaining compost in the bottom and topped it with my soil mix and she proceeded to grow the prettiest cucumbers I've seen this year. My daughter (14) started a radish patch, we've never tried them roasted, we love roasted turnips though so we will probably like them.

My daughter and one of my grandsons came out this evening and helped me pull out tomato plants and amend the soil and put in new tomato plants in a different area. So will see if they have time here to produce. Did them from cuttings not seed. Also sent you a picture of the difference in the roots on the cuttings in the aerogarden and ones rooted in soil. That’s how I keep my garden record. I have a green hardback journal without lines and it has 1.5 years worth of journaling and I draw out my patches like that. I do circles and number them and have a key at the bottom! I have only three medium beds at the moment. I journal when I seed things, whether they were direct down or transplanted. I try to write weekly observations. It really has helped me track information and my own thought process fo growing edibles. This winter while I plan my spring garden again I have a feeling I will be wishing I had chosen a journal with larger pages...

Hi Jessica, thank you for sharing your tips and tricks or planting and keeping track of it all, lovely assistant today in the garden. Since you mention rabbit manure at the end I have a question regarding the best time to place manure(s). I know this video is about fall planting, my question is geared towards preparing the soil for the rest of winter. I have collected leaves for laying over the top of the garden area my question is would it be more beneficial to add the manure now under the leaves and let it all do it's thing through the winter months, just put the leaves and let them decompose and feed the earth, then added the manure closer to when I will be planting the seeds and or plants in the ground this next spring. Or should I add the manure and leaves for the winter rest and then add more manure come planting time?? I will mention the ground I am working with will be a first time garden crop area. Nothing has been planted in the area for over a year. Thank you for taking time to respond-:)
