Here's a little tip from my younger days having to milk by hand when the power went out. Rest your head between her back leg and the back of her belly. It creates a block to the movement of her leg so she feels a resistance when she starts to lift her leg and it will recircuit her movement and she will set her leg back down. I don't know if it will work for you or not since she is going into heat but it worked for me in the good ole days!

I’ll tell you now that I have to haul water for ducks and have a recent rib injury, I’m rethinking this whole keeping ducks all winter. The future planning will involve a larger flock of poultry to be harvested before winter. Rookie mistake. Moved to acreage a year ago, our first year caring for animals. I don’t mind the rabbits or the laying flock. Anything else, no.

Frame the opening for your stained glass. Create a molding on one side of the opening all the way around. Get two pieces of regular glass cut the same size as your stained glass. Place a piece of clear glass in the opening against the molding. Place the stained glass in and then the other pane of clear glass. Cut more molding to hold the other side of the glass in the opening. Caulk as you go. Easy peasy. Old School windows. If you want something more sturdy than glass use polycarbonate. You can also buy that at glass dealers.

When I first moved into my house, I discovered the stained glass transom window was just sitting bare to the outdoors. All it would take was a stray baseball to destroy it. I don't know how my handyman did it but it seems like what you described. He had to get the glass cut to size but did the rest himself.

@@charlottesesco8795 plexiglass can discolor. I agree on just using either a pane of glass cut to the right dimensions on the outside, set the stain glass in, the next pane and secure with molding. Easy peasy. I make stained glass and have installed in my own house. Since it's interior, I only have the protective glass on outside. If I can do it, Jeremiah definitely can.

Here's a video link explaining. You can add picture frame molding on inside after caulking to add extra security to keep it in. I actually don't think you need the interior extra glass pane. Just on outside. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oaHdpJ9redmGo8U

We are three generations living together on our farm and I love seeing our 14 year old grandson drive off in the truck to do chores. This morning grandpa had all the grandkids out helping stock the firewood. It takes us all to get it all done.

Helping them understand about the cycle of energy made the poop removal meaningful. Bless you and your family !

Your whole lesson on the energy cycle of farming is so perfect, Jess.
@amaz21
@amaz21 2 жыл бұрын
Referring to energy flow as a cycle might be okay with children at this age, but eventually they should be able to distinguish between matter cycling within a system and energy flowing in a single direction through that system. Composting primarily recycles the matter. If the compost is fully broken down, there wouldn't be much energy remaining (the energy is given off as thermal energy when the compost is still "hot"). Energy can't really cycle the same way as so much is given off as heat at each trophic level. It's one of the many reasons that getting as close to the energy source as possible (by eating more plants than animal products) is important. (I hope that doesn't come across as criticism since Jess is clearly an excellent teacher, but I do think distinguishing between the two is important when learners get to a certain level.)

We northerners love watching "frost sensitive" southern friends in Winter. I was shoveling snow yesterday at -2 degrees here in Michigan. But then you in the south can laugh at us when we wilt in 100 degree temps in the Summer. I lost it a couple years ago when South Carolina declared a state of emergency when they got a half-inch of snow. Laughed so hard I had tears and a sore throat. Your children are awesome. An example to parents everywhere.

Find out where the old farmers hang out for coffee in the morning (i.e. Hardee's, McDonald's) and pick their brains for information, invite them over to check out your farm. Look out for the small museums in your area, quite a few of them have more of the local history of the area, also old grave yards and Churches can give you the names of those who settled earlier in South Carolina. The local Ag. place is also a font of information and if the High School has a carpentry class the teacher may have a suggestion.

I loved this video! The kids remarks were quite funny. What a bummer loosing that milk. Showing the true realities of life on a farm, the mishaps & learning curves are what make your vlog worth watching. It’s all a learning process. Oh here’s something to do with the alpaca poop… We make poo tea for inside plants and sell it in our store. Collect the poop, spread it out so it’s dry, fill a small Muslim bag with it. When people get it home they make boiling water and steep the bag for about 15 min. You can use a coffee can or a mason jar then just water house plant’s. We also sell it in used feed bags. People come load up a used feed bag for 5.00. Farmers come with their dump trucks and load up for 20-25 dollars…. They swear it is like gold on their tomato plants. Just passing along some fun jobs for the kids! Love following your progress!

Thank you for showing us real life Jess. It makes me feel so much safer knowing one day I'll have my own homestead and will have chaotic moments that I can belly laugh directly after it happens. Hugs to you all. Miah. Please don't gold mine instead of farm hehe. 🏅💰

Have the boys collect the quarts and get a tumbler. I know my little one would love that. Your boys might too. They can see what different rocks look like when they are tumbled.

Lol, the surprise of a cow kicking over the milk! The richness of all your expressions. Cleaning out the barn fun entertainment... boys listening to you your explanations of the cycle of composting the cow poop. Life lessons on the farm. Great video guys, thank you.

I'm encouraging you to include the "milk bucket incidents" as they occur. First, it gives us a what-just-happened moment and, second, a reality check hahaha. Before I start running off to mimic you, I need to see the hard work. Thanks so much for the pleasure of living vicariously. ♥️

It's interesting to see how Honey has gotten more comfortable with you. She walks right next to you now as she goes through the gate. Weeks ago she would give you a wide berth.

I do appreciate that you still published this. Farming is not all glamorous and very few people show the down and dirty and sad parts of it and it gives those of us who are new to it a false sense of romanticism when it comes to farming it homesteading. I learned last year in 2021 that if you truly have a heart for it you WILL have hard days and you will cry a lot. And yes I have cried over spilled milk hahahaha.

SOME rocks in the soil is very nice. Our land is old tobacco farmland and has no rocks for several feet down into the earth. That equates to a perfect mud puddle in fall-winter-early spring. Really hard on animals!

Thank you so much for publishing this. I have had the roughest time milking my goat. She knocks my bucket over very often and she is super steppy every time I milk. It's so discouraging!!

Find a way to tie down her back feet. They figure out pretty quickly to stand still and even if they don’t, they can only do limited damage.

You may want to get Helen used to getting fed in the milking stanchion before she calves. It’s going to be much easier after she calves to get her milked rather than waiting until she calves to do so. A first time momma’s temperament sometimes changes when they calf. They get a little nervous due to wanting to protect their new baby. Not saying she will get mean, just nervous and unsure.
