A couple months ago I rope soloed Zenyatta Mondatta on El Capitan over 8 days and I thought I'd try to make a video to convey what soloing a bigwall feels like. Sorry it's so long.

Well done Oliver. Back in '87 I soloed the Zodiac and Xaver Bongard was starting his ZM solo that same day. We shared a beer and off we went. When I finished and he was still half way up, but I always wondered what the route entailed. Thanks for sharing an amazing experience! BTW - Walt Shipley had also just finished soloing the NA wall and we shared drinks back at the bar that evening. I think it was the start of a solo aid climbing era, trying to replicate the achievements and honor the efforts of Charlie Porter, Robbins and Grossman, then Kohl and Cole took over. Appears to be a resurgence today. Nothing like it.

Hey Oliver, I Was climbing Zodiac the same time you were on this Route. We spoke briefly about half way up the wall. I have some pictures and videos of you, mostly your hanging haulbag/portaledge, if your interested. Great video.

This is a great reminder of just how scary harder aid can be, and how blue collar the whole endeavor is! Thanks for putting it together for us! I, too have aided 5.7 at the top of El Cap--transitioning to free climbing after several days of standing in aiders is just a huge mental leap!

Enjoyed this so much Oli, got all your other videos lined up! Super impressive effort and love your day off to appreciate the wonder of Yosemite Valley. A quarter of a century since I've been there, I should go back!

Just curious, do you wear climbing shoes on your big wall solos? Some kind of hybrid? I have always struggled with shoes on big aid climbs!!!

Beginner question if u don’t mind: each your ladder on biners with a Petzl attach but you only switch and crank up the Yates/Skots hook on all pros. Advantage of having 3 lanyards I understand but advantage of having 2 on same pro I’d like to know - tks
@olivertippett48112 ай бұрын
@@jackiceful the alfifi is much quicker and easier to adjust than the petzl lanyards, and is also better for top stepping and releasing under load. For that reason I use the petzl lanyards for bounce testing but otherwise don’t adjust them and mainly use them to avoid dropping my ladders. I then use the alfifi for positioning myself. Everyone has their own system that works for them, but for me this is the best.

Make sense. I aided few time in past and was simply using 2 Yates (bounce testing on them) and for spicy stuff I would think a 3rd Alfifi would be smart.

This part of El Cap seems more broken than other parts, more cracks and corners...
