This week I try to lead my first E1 trad climb (6a+/5.10b) with the help of Tom Randall from ‪@WideBoyz‬. I somehow managed to make even a pro climber nervous.
Thanks to Tom for all his help. Check out Lattice training here:

As someone who started climbing around the same time as you, this channel has been my favorite climbing content by far. Nearly every video has me feeling emotional by the end because of how relatable your struggles and successes are. It's one thing to watch a crusher redpoint their 5.15 project. But it's another thing entirely to watch a fellow moderate climber struggle and push their way through the physical and mental cruxes that I am currently battling as well. The storytelling and editing do a great job of making me feel like im experiencing these climbs with you. Thanks!

Hey Mike, as a (trad) climber and multipitch instructor, great video :) Though I must say, I'm a bit disappointed in Tom's belaying. There are numerous occasions where he lets go of the brake strand of the grigri, or even holds the device in what we call a "death grip", which are both big no-no's. I really expected something better from a pro climber with such a exemplary function to others. And to be fair, other pro climbers (like Adam Ondra) do the same, but that doesn't excuse this poor practice. Multiple (near) accidents have been recorded due to people belaying like this

Fantastic effort Mike. Did that route years ago and it was a similar experience (my first grit E1)... but without Tom! Talking of which... it was great to see Tom being so stoked. It would be easy for him to be blasé about it as it's "only" E1 to him, but he knew what a mega achievement it was for you. Neither of you will forget it... and you're now climbing brothers. Fantastic video... subbed.

Just a heads up that Trad grading does include a number, as well as the letters. And that's what helps you differentiate between a bold but technically easy, and a technically hard but well protected route (VS 4B vs VS 5A). So once you get used to it, I think its a pretty good and descriptive system.

Aw mate I'm so so happy for you. I started climbing in the same month you posted your first climbing video and it's been spooky how we have had a parallel journey throughout the whole time, from bouldering, to sport, learning trad, being scared, getting plateaued and trying to grasp the mental sides etc. even down to the similar grades through the whole time. It's been an amazing journey to watch and I've never missed a video. To see this though has been absolutely epic and even emotional when I properly feel what it meant to you on the top out. You've absolutely inspired me to push myself on my next sessions later this week and beyond. Well well done mate it's your best video for me so far and a true achievement and step in climbing. Just like any climb get over your feet. Breath, look up and where is going to be you next placement? What are you going to do if you get there and it sucks. Are you going up, down climb, or jump? Of course it is better to try to down climb before jumping but what you don't want to do is not have a plan then get way over your last piece and find nothing. Once you find a place to set pro get on your feet, look at the crack, decide which piece to use, then get it and place it. Don't just grab something and flail it around hoping it will fit in something. This is a good way to have it get jammed and not be a good placement. Then you will have to spend more energy getting it out or leave it there blocking the crack.

The "yoyo" technique is the only way I can do some harder trad climbs and sport climbs for that matter. Practicing on top rope is just not the same and actually hurts my later attempts to lead usually.

The more trad you do the better you will understand / get a feel for the grading. It seeming a little nebulous at the beginning works to it's favour in many ways in that it helps discourage you from biting off more than you can chew (and that's important for trad because the consequences can be life threatening). Also a lot of Birtish trad is not face climbing, it's weird & awkward and the system needs to reflect how committing climbs are without relying solely on objective technical grades. "Extreme" grades started out as "Extremely Severe" but nowadays people just use the shorthand, and the whole system is more or less a continuation of the old system used to describe the diffculty for any route up a mountain (including hikes & scrambles).

Awww you were just around the corner from me! Good to see you enjoying some Peak Grit! I gotta say though i disagree with your take on the UK Trad grading system... Once you hit Severe in the adjectival grade you start getting a numbered and lettered technical grades, so it's by far the most comprehensive system for Safety vs Difficulty if you ask me. I don't know if a f6a or a 5.10b is going to have bad gear placements or be horribly run out, whereas I know an E1 5a will likely be low gear but easy climbing and an E1 5c will be safe as you like but thuggy

The YDS system does have a danger grading scale built in as well. To my knowledge it is also much simpler and straightforward as it uses a consistent danger grading - G, PG, PG-13, R, and X. With increasing danger from G (very safe - splitter crack) to X (Serious injury or death falling from certain spots. Thus, you have the YDS 5.X technical grade everyone already knows and love with a safety grade that are totally independent from eachother.

I get what you are saying. The issue I have is that the technical grade is too hard to understand. Is E1 5c safe? Yes. What about E2 5c?

@@MikeBoydClimbs at a glance I feel like it gives me all the info I need to know, if I know I can climb an E1 5c but it's at the very limit of my ability chances are I can climb E2 5c but the gear will be worse and the consequences higher, so it gives me enough to make a judgement call at least. As an example, I've climbed Cheat (E3 5b) at Wilton, the climbing is not especially challenging but the gear is two pieces mid height and from the top crimps a ground fall is likely if you slip unless your belayer is on it (and then you bounce like a baby... Who may or may not have soiled themselves...) whereas around the corner Shivers Arete gets E1 5b for being a similar difficulty (Thin crimps at the top as I recall) but it's crux is protected by a (now) beautiful shiny new peg (used to be a rusty one but was still pretty solid)... It's widely considered that if the peg were removed it would be E3 also... It's just a safety Vs difficulty thing and its nicely granular, but I admit it's probably something I learned to appreciate and understand more over time, it probably was baffling at first (but that was a long time ago)

@@stoo2k Might be for North America only, but it’s pretty standard at any Trad climbing areas (from Yosemite and the Gunks to remote Dacks areas). Although to be fair in places like the Dacks and Gunks, not only is the technical grade a major sandbag, but so is the danger grade. Would you say that can also be the case with the English system? That could be an aspect where the system takes the edge.

The English trad grades do make sense. It was called diff, v diff or severe because these words do describe the climb. You've just forgotten that when we started using these grades, climbers were wearing hob nail boots and just had a hemp rope tied around their waste. There was a time when severe was the highest grade ever climbed, but equipment has progressed to the point that what was very difficult is now easy.
