Rope/Wire/Cable Animation Using Cloth Dynamics - 3ds Max 2021

I have tried many ways to rig and animate cables--by
- using a bone rig (hard to animate because of unwanted side movements of other bones)
- using hose object (animation too rigid but works to some extent)
This tutorial uses cloth dynamics which seem appropriate for cable, wire and rope animations.
SKIN WRAP BUG: It's important to note that the Skin Wrap modifier may not work unless it is applied after properly exiting the Line modifier edit mode, if you have done any edits beforehand. To do this, in the modifier list, expand Line item and select Vertex or Segment sub-items, then the parent Line item, then deselect by clicking at any blank area within the list window. You may select Normalize Spline and apply Skin Wrap modifier, Add Cable mCloth to the Parameters box below and immediately click Start Simulation.
TIP BENDING PROBLEM. The tip at the animated plug bends awkwardly and hard to straighten. If anyone has found the best solution, please comment.

you can use search in the modifier also you can use 12345 for vertex edge poly border poly and element.....you don't need to click every time for the selection

Hello Thanks for this very interresting tutorial. I tried to apply it to a rope linked to 2 boxes. The thing is that the lengh of my rope changes as if it was rubber, how can i avoid that please ?

Select "rope soul", then adjust Stretchiness and Stiffness in the Physical Fabric Properties rollout of the mCloth modifier settings.

@@Pixelsplasher Thanks but unfortunatly i can't obtain the good result. I did set Stretchiness = 0 and Stiffness =1 but length of my rope still changes.

Question: Why is there need for separate cable "body" skin-wrapped to the "soul"?

The soul is the animatable object that gives life to the body. :) If the body is directly animated as a cloth, it will go limp and collapse like a fireman's hose without water in it.

the tutorial is awesome but why you made that complicated navigation clicking so many times on the viewport...It can easily access through the mouse wheel and you can also change the interaction mode in Maya

@@Pixelsplasher I'm a beginner, it's not that easy to uv unwrap this types of cords, if you want to apply a texture like a climbing cord... but I will search for a tutorial about this, thanks anyway.

@@ricr8987 Hi, you have to check generate mapping coordinates in rendering rollout of the line. then you have to apply Unwrap UVW on it. when you open UV editor from that, You got Square UV Island.👍

For anyone, the last thing you need to do in order for the skin wrap to work is animate. If you animate first it will detach from the cable. Silly me

I got stuck with that, too@@poorpolarbear and never really understood what happened. I just made another mCloth from a back-up copy again or discard all my changes.

The trash music is white noise that I play when working. It got recorded along with the screen capture and I thought of leaving it on there to test the size of KZbin's copyright coverage.
