There were just over 130 British soldiers and around 4,500 Zulu warriors in the actual battle.

Rorke's Drift is a pretty impressive story. Isandlwana is the reason though. It was the Brit's PR response to build up Rorke's Drift beyond all other pieces of news, because at Isandlwana, the Brits got chewed through to the point that nobody was left to even talk about it. Now obviously they massacred the fuck out of the Zulus afterwards, but it's worth keeping in mind that Isandlwana was a giant defeat, unparalleled considering the different weaponry on offer for each side, and they needed the Rorke's Drift story to regain some pride and public image. Hence why we all know the story so well. Awesome kit mind you. I'd be keen, but at £175, it better come with a massage. I can build every one of those buildings for a fraction of the costs, most likely about £20-£40 of plasticard and glues. And then there's redcoats, and I'll never use them elsewhere. I'd rather run the scenario using Uruk-Hai in Lord of the Rings, or Zombies in a modern style game, or maybe using oodles of Cultists in 40k. I have Zulus but they're just the Tribes from Sauron's Southern regions, I use them as Harad or the equivalent.

In the larger set (The Horns of the buffalo) you actually get the FULL rorkes drift with the final redoubt, more wagons and the other kraals etc. Although it's something like £250

I like alternative historical games for example give zulus English long bows, throwing axes , medevil light armor and trebuchets war machines, greek fire , so taking the British by surprise, the results are different. Finally under these conditions the Zulu take less causalities and take the drift.

Nice Shag Pile on those. Amazing details internally I just think the roof material could be better. I suppose it looks real enough.

Great set! Bigger sounds better or two of these? British colonial version of the Alamo. Difference is that the Brits give those Zulus the business. Go Brits!

Incidentally... Might be worth mentioning that EMPRESS MINIATURES do TWO versions of a Command Set for Rorke's Drift... One is the Historically Correct version as supplied in this set, featuring Chard, Bromhead, Hook and... (I can't remember!!!) The OTHER version is the MOVIE version featuring sculpts based on the actors from the movie!!! (Less Victorian beards, more Hollywood!!!) xx SF

Just to point out that the the Zulus did not capture the colours of the 24th Regiment of foot from Isandlwana - they floated down the river having been dropped by a soldier and later recovered.

Have to say, for someone that passes himself off as a wargaming expert, he doesn't know about how to use fluff for roofs?! I'm guessing he's a 40K guy?!

Rorke’s Drift…firearms but NOT those taken from Isandlwana earlier in the day. British won this battle. Zulus retreated from battlefield with huge losses. 750 dead & 1,500 wounded. British army statistics of the time had kill/wound ratio of one dead for every 50 rounds & one wounded every 25 rounds. This means Zulus sustained 2,250 causalities out of a fighting force of 4,000! This was akin to annihilation. Zulus never recovered from this hammering at Rorke’s Drift

To me the Zulu war is a another sad chapter of human history, too bad the Zulus didn't have at least medevil technology by this time, then the war might have sung the other way forcing the British to a war of attrition.
