Rory McIlroy is captain of Fenway Sports Group's TGL Boston franchise (Tomorrow Golf League) - the very same Fenway that leads the SSG (Strategic Sports Group) new billion dollar investment into the PGA Tour pushing the Saudi PIF out. But Rory is cheerleading for Saudi PIF to be IN the deal.
What kind of circle is Rory trying to square....

Great commentary as always. What the PGAT doesn't understand, and Rory now does is that LIV is an international golf league with USA golfers being less than 40% of the field. An interesting tidbit is this; Martin Kaymer and Kevin Na are non-equity captains. That means there is room for Rory and Victor. Just imagine that scenario, Holy cow!!!

Duh… you’re not serious Rory understands? The number of flips he did regarding LIV would have won him an Olympic gymnastic gold medal! That guy is clueless and should not try to pretend he’s smart …He quits as a board member of the PGAT and Spieth replaced him. Now he has the gall to call up Spieth and tell him why he doesn’t agree with the latter? Wtf….

Good description and response. Rory is akin to the pampered athlete that has always been told that he could do no wrong. He doesn't have the depth of formal education that almost all the American players on both tours have. I was giving Rory the benefit of doubt. He does not have an inkling of what the 100th ranked player has to endure and deal with on a 30+ week grind. @@johnseow6544

As a European, golf needs to have a global tour and not be US centric. If PGA weren’t so arrogant and myopic they could have listened to Greg Norman over the last decade and satisfied that demand in Australia, Asia, Europe. South America. They could have avoided the inevitable rise of LIV. But they became the Blockbuster/ Kodak of sport, not taking that demand and threat to their cosy lofted positions seriously. Complete idiots.

Greg Norman has said LIV can accommodate 15 teams. Maybe the plan is to pick off one superstar per year over the next two years and give him a team. They could target the winners of this year’s majors- if they’re not already LIV players- or go after Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele and offer them the not quite Rahm deal. Or get Rory and give him the Rahm deal. Reminder: there are only two team captaincy spots left (maybe 3 W Iron Heads).

LIV can accommodate 66 Players - 22 Tee times with a modified shotgun start. Three Early tee offs on par 5’s and one delayed tee off on the first hole for leaders. That would be 15 teams and up to 6 non team spots to qualifiers to accommodate OWGR. Captains can be shuffled and/or replaced especially as captains play declines with age or health.

In order for it to be a tax benefit for the SSG, they would have to get more in tax benefits than they would in actuall $$$ losses. There are some tax loopholes left, but not many. Augusta is the definition of elite. That means that the "admin" heels to no one. They call the shots and the only possible approach to "convincing" (as opposed to coercing) the inclusion of Joaco is to appeal to their pride and how only the best of the best get invited. If enough people express this by pointing out that a weaker field diminishes their legacy and reputation, then they might well do the right thing.

A) A few more players coming to live ( Because 1.5 Billion to the 200 players = 7.5 Million per MAXIMUM)... But the equity is weighted toward past performance aka....Past winners get more equity than none winning players ( TIGER Share ) ... Once the players see the REAL Deal they may not be so happy with the current deal... B) Also as stated earlier PIF has no urgency to buy into this "Mess of a Tour". I think PIF will just cherry pick another few top players and watch the fall out from afar.... The PGA Players will have to learn someday they should have looked out for they own Ass-ets... C) Keeping Senator B's committee appeased by making a deal with SSG was a bad deal for the PGA Tour players... ( With all the investments PIF has in US companies currently I doubt the senate committee could have stopped PIF from making a deal with the PGA Tour.) Do I dare mention campaign contributions (he he).. Just kidding ...

I wouldnt be suprised if the 'back up plan' is a proper world singles tour, with bigger money prizes and its own world ranking points system.. entirely funded by PiF.. thus turning the PGA into a feeder tour, just like they did with every tour outside the USA 😂😉 Yasir would miss a great opertunity if he didn't start that singles tour to work along side LiV.. Liv could probably reduce the number of tournaments per year so players can compete in both, but add bigger cash wins to LiV. The singles tour could also operate on a points system that sees good players auto transfer into liv teams. If you don't play well and you get dropped from that team. It will keep the singles tour players hungry to perform.

Congrats to The Thunderbirds (PE Group running the Phoenix Open franchise) for running the biggest Carnivore Capitalist, overrun dumpster fire in golf history. Just past 10AM EDST. For most of the 1st 1/2 hour of the 3rd round, the noise was everywhere and you literally couldn't hear the announcers. Nobody did anything and the announcers had to yell over the crowd until somebody got them stage mikes.. Noise and people walking is continual on every hole. There's just an endless din. Some of the golfers are trying to make good with it. But, I haven't seen one golfer who didn't look like he was going to throwup. They say there are 40K people around the 16th. Easily there are at least 40K more swamping the course. Head of The Thunderbirds said they had to close the gates and turn away patrons (who already paid through the nose for tickets?). No kidding, They are easily going to have crowd control problems as the fans get drunker and louder. And it's AZ, so somebody is going to get shot. They say LIv Golf is "golf, just louder", well, PGA Golf is only a bit quieter and less unruly than NASCAR.

I think the only thing preventing Rory from joining LIV at this time are his exemptions to majors running out. I believe he loses that status after this year, as it will have been 10 yrs. since his last major victory. Were he to jump ship now he could very well lose enough places in the OWGR rankings not to qualify for the Masters, PGA Championship and US Open in 2025. Thus, it makes sense for him to stick it out on the PGAT this year and join LIV next year when he'll stil likely be ranked Top 10 in the world and be eligible for all the majors were he not to win a major this year.

I’d like to throw in this comment on the majors that I hope you guys can expand upon in an upcoming show….if you look at the golf ecosystem, every tour whether PGA, DP Tour, Asían Tour or even now LIV, all of golf feeds off of the success of the majors…go back to Jack Nicklaus, Arnie Palmer or Tiger and now Rory trying to get the slam…throw in Koepka and his stature through success at the majors…It’s the majors that get the eyes and can generate worldwide very high television audiences….The majors are the crown jewels of golf but if they don’t establish autonomy (away from OWGR ) and make sure they have the very best fields, the best golfers in the world and some of the new upcoming young stars, then they do so at their peril and that would be incredibly damaging to their position in sports worldwide and obviously terrible for the sports entertainment side of golf…even the Ryder Cup benefits from the stature of golf in the majors that helps make it one of the top five sporting events in the world…

Like Darkstar said, Rory doesn’t need money so his chase for legacy is the Ryder cup. He flipped when Rahm and Hatton moved to Liv and threatened his winning in the Ryder cup. His Majors chase is mostly the Masters and he’s not threatened in getting to achieve that win. PGA tournament this week only draw is the 16th hole. If that wasn’t a thing, this would be another boring pga event. Another non elevated event. Unwatchable. Every week Liv tournament has way more entertainment with the individual and team competition and like DS said, with more interesting personalities.

With JM delaying talks with Yassir so he could get money from fenway would have seriously p...sed off Yassir where your word is your bond. PIF need a different strategy cause their players want owgr points. IMHO PIF need to set up their own point system with all the other tours that they work with to discredit owgr as not a true representation of the ranking of golfers all around the world. All major wins should have an asterix by the winner's name until a totally seperately fair system in place.

Why is PIF in a hurry to join with the PGA Tour ... SSG will probably not make money in the current PGA Tour Structure ... Sponsors will start dropping unless they are allowed to at least stay at the current level of sponsorship... SSG maybe willing to lose $100 million ... One year maybe two max investment... PGA Tour spent over $100 Million last year ... So unless SSG is crazy to lose money their investment is short term ... How much ownership does SSG now have in PGA Tour Enterprises? LIV is about to Explode .. and I Bet PIF is in no hurry to make a deal .... Wait and Watch ..

Time to boycott the Masters since they are boycotting great players such as Neimann who just won on LIV. It is really unbelievable they are doing that. Who wants to watch the Masters if they don't have the best players?

Someone needs to say the facts, a major is NOT a major anymore. And if you win one at the moment future players are likely to say ...yes, but only half the field was playing.

Rory knows how things are going to end up and Speith does not. Rory should have already jumped ship and didn't. Spieth won't at all and will seriously regret it.

I've almost quit watching PGA and primarily watch LIV! Rory and his crybaby cohorts throwing hissy fits about other players making a BUSINESS decision drove me away! Have any of those whiners thanked thanked the LIV golfers for the new financial structure the PGA has agreed to ?The funniest part to me IF the PGA had been more open to discussing many of the structures more rewarding payments when the now LIV golfers were trying to get them to the table in good faith LIV wouldn't be an issue!

This is how I see it at this point: 1. PIF/LIV is for the future of Golf. 2. The PGA is for the PGA (not Golf or the Golfers) [Get it? The PGA IS FOR THE PGA] The SSG is for the SSG and we would expect that, they are investors. I seriously think that the SSG people plan to take over the PGA because the PGA has done nothing but shoot themselves in the foot and are VERY DESPERATE! The best move would HAVE BEEN for the PGA to work with LIV. They would have retained their control and would be far better off. They did not! Now they are very desperate. And the SSG does not see that but is willing to invest $3 Billion or whatever? NO. They see things VERY CLEARLY and I have NO idea who these people are, am I pyschic? Or is this obvious? Jay is the front man for the PGA. Ask yourselves WHY? I would not be surprised if the PGA decides to increase the hole from 72 to 110. Wouldn't that benefit their professional golfers? It would cut their career much shorter - more injuries - more happy PGA controllers behind the scenses enjoying the show! Maybe taking bets on who the next top golfer that will drop out due to injuries. And decrease the ball flight and increase the length of holes and reduce the width of fairways. That would be a fun show. Why have a 54 hole, shot gun start PGA? That would benefit YOUR golfers.

Spot on. Both could have existed perfectly well together. As time goes on and events unravel the whole situation worsens the more Jay, Ed, Jimmy et al fail to understand they could have been part of something much bigger and better.
