I've spoken and talked to Rory on a couple of occasions. 1976 Jazz Bilzen was the first time. Having to seek shelter from a heavy down-pour during a Ted Nugent gig. Rory was waiting to go on stage and the electricity went South. Nugent went mad and Gallagher was just sitting there, forlorn. I offered him my beer and we started talking about Belgian beers and the intricasies of brewing them. Just like that. Two people in the middle of chaos, just talking. I was fifteen. Met Gallagher again four years later at the 1980 Reading Rock Festival. He bloody well remembered me and we picked-up our conversation about Belgian beers right there and then. Promised to send some beers over, which I did, at a very expensive fee and I met Rory again backstage at the 1982 Reading Rock Festival. Te nicest guy you can imagine. Friendly and welcoming, treated you like family. We had an appointment in early 1996, through mutual friend Roland Van Campenhout, a Belgian Blues artist, but Rory died, way too soon, and we of course never met again. I'm staring at some promised beers as I write. They're sitting there, on the shelf for all these years. I don't dare to touch them, afraid he'd go away when the beers do. Love the man. He was such a lovely person and I miss him.

Rory was a rare breed. Superb electric guitarist...excellent acoustic guitarist.....more than adequate harmonica player.....indeed an All Around Man. I admired Rory covering blues artists like Bo Carter, Big Bill Bronzy, Blind Boy Fuller, JB Hutto among others. Most other artists of the time period covered the bigger blues names such as Muddy Watters, Howlin Wolf, BB King, etc. Nothing wrong with that but Rory went those extra steps to honor and keep alive all the great original blues players from the past.

This is form a BBC Old Grey Whistle Test Special full concert on Rory’s 27th birthday - I remember watching it live - this was a really big deal in the days before the internet and video recorder and mobile phones - there was only 3 Main TV stations at the time. After the program finished being ‘live’ broadcast, the cameras kept recording the encores for another twenty minutes. Everyone loved Rory.

I’ve been telling you for years, man - RORY! I think what makes him so special is that he started out playing acoustic and immersing himself in the older folk blues, and you can feel that connection going all the way back to the Delta.

My God how good is Rory Gallagher? Just tearing it up and carrying you away. Rory lives. Legends never die. You know Rory is in blues heaven now. Trading 8s with Jesse Ed Davis, Jeff Healey, SRV and Jimi. I can just hear them. Blasting the clouds away. Own the place. Love Rory's singing, doing same vocal/guitar notes simultaneously. Such a duet. Rory showed great respect for the original American bluesmen. I know they appreciate Rory's talent and respect. Gerry MacAvoy's bass is such a great part of Rory's band. Way to go lads. RIP Rory Gallagher.

Really enjoyed your reaction to Rory`s version of All Around Man, and like you said the old Bluesmen never got to see their songs performed by the "next generation" And sadly Rory was taken from us at the age of 47, he always gave credit where due and always treated the old songs with the greatest respect....

I agree, the long gone Bluesmen would be proud of Rory and all the other musicians who appreciate the "old" Blues. I'm happy that I saw Rory live twice in the mid 70s when he was on top of his carreer, never forget these concerts. Great reaction as always, thank you, all the best from Germany

Rory credited Bo Carter often before playing that one. He adjusted the lyrics somewhat because Mr. Carter's original lyrics might have been a bit too descriptive for that audience. :) Thank you so much for posting this.

Two 'live' masterpieces: Live in Europe 71' and 'Irish tour 74' ! 100% agree with you on how guys like Rory, or Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, Ten Years after, etc. have brought the Delta and Chicago bluesmen in the light and recognition they deserved. Without them the music of the 60's & the 70's could never have been.

Might be my favorite live performance by Rory (but then, again, I tend to think that whenever I see one). Probably more than any of his blues contemporaries (with the exception of Allman Bros), Rory's homage to the original artists, that he loved and respected, was pure and genuine. Thanks for another great Rory reaction and for sharing some of the original Bo Carter version. Would love to see you check out some of Rory's Beat Club performances: "In Your Town", "Used to Be", "Crest of a Wave" and "Just the Smile"! BTW, love the "One Way Out" reference.

Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. I always love watching Rory Gallagher. I watched an interview with Rory one time where he talked about being in the States somewhere, I don't remember where, and going into a drug store and buying a bottle of Bayer aspirin. He dumped out the aspirin and used the bottle for a slide. I wonder if that is the bottle he bought that he uses in this performance?

Thank Soul Train Bro I appreciate your honesty and great taste in music; I saw Rory in 1971 same band and I agree with your view of critics from all those tasteless rag magazines especially those critics in Rolling Stone. They don’t get it. Pick up an instrument and try playing like Rory then you will understand where he is coming from . I look forward to more of your Reactions of other musicians. Thanks again soul brother. Ps I appreciate you bringing up the real players of old and giving credit where it’s due. Rockin Dave

1 I appreciate your honest review. 2 Please please, please stop pronouncing the 2ng g in the name, in Ireland it would sound more like Gallaher, I won't confuse you with the Gailic spelling, Gallagher is an English poor attempt to spell an Irish name. 3 he was a very modist man who always took the time to educate who wrote the song before he played it, if not himself. 4 His live shows.. Drat been to G&R, Dylan, ac/DC the later came close... But not quite Carlling...
