I didn't know him well, but 'encountered' him more than once in Cork, which is where I grew up. My older sister hung around with him in the City when he was there, and I was her 'involuntary' messenger boy: "bring this here", "bring that there" - Americans would probably use the term Gofor! I met him the first time - and thought nothing of it - when I was about 14 years old and didn't have a clue who he was. That says as much about the type of unassuming, 'one of the lads' he was as it does about my blissful ignorance. Sadly, it was many years later, when I went abroad, that I realised how big he was.

The one and only Rory Gallagher. So super, soulful and mindbending. Rory owned the neck on that '61 Strat and was the first Power Trio band (Taste). Jerry MacAvoy played bass for Rory for over 20 years. If you want electric blues guitar that feeds your soul.....Rory is your man. Oh, the songs. He wrote them. His poor Strat was stolen and left in the rain for a couple of weeks. Still sounds killer plugged straight into his amp. Rory did it all with his fingers. So talented and so loved by his fans. Rory loved them back. Up close and personal. I love Rory Gallagher. My very favorite guitarist from across the pond. RIP Rory.

Sorry if I’m late. Rory cultist since the 70s here. Now go for the live versions of “I could Have Had Religion” and “Calling Card.” One of the things that made Rory so good was that he got his start listening to the old folk blues, and you can hear it in his playing. That raw, edgy tone in his guitar and his fluid phrasing have never been duplicated. Now go for Dire Straits, “Sultans of Swing.” Guitarist Mark Knopfler gets a totally different tone from a Strat, but every bit as good.

I first heard of him in 1970 but for some reason never gave him a good listen. Eight years later I was living on an island in the Indian Ocean and one lonely evening I decided to buy some cassette tapes to listen to. They didnt have much selection, but they did have some of Rory's, and I remembered his name and thought "Why not?" I bought his first and also Blueprint. After one listen to "Sinner Boy" I was a Rory fan for life. I went back the next day and bought Calling Card, Tattoo, and Against the Grain. I have no problem seeing him as the greatest guitarist ever, although I think it is impossible to really determine that. But what sets him apart is not just his skill - which is equal to anyone's - but his total absorption in both the music and sharing with his fans. Its no secret why his live albums are considered his best - and I usually dont buy live albums, but I did his. On Live in Europe, he absolutely rocked the joint with Going to My Hometown playing a God-damned mandolin. During the "civil war" in Northern Ireland, only Rory went on tour there, for the sake of the fans. His beat-up old Stratocaster had to have the guts replaced because they rusted, mostly due to the amount of sweat he generates in every concert. And while most artists have a legion of security keeping the fans off stage, Rory often went into the audience and played. Greatness is not just ability to do something, but to do it consistently, to do it to a great degree, to make it enjoyable for those sharing in it, to inspire others, and to do it selflessly. That was Rory Gallagher.

Great reaction! Thank you, Kristin for taking Space Cowboy's suggestion and checking out Rory. He existed to play, lived the blues and refused to let the industry compromise his vision. His live performances are sublime, but I equally love listening to his studio recordings - his acoustic stuff is also supreme. He really could do it all - self taught he played guitar, mandolin, electric sitar, harmonica, alto saxophone. His songwriting and singing are unique and outstanding. Hard to believe that I've been listening to him for nearly 50 years, was lucky to see him live on my birthday in 1978 - and I was never the same. Sounds trite, but it's true. He was that special. Worth checking out: Used to Be, In Your Town and Just The Smile from his Beat Club performances. Also, Cradle Rock, Tattoo'd Lady. He put out 14 solo albums - so much great music to explore.
