It does work, and if folks watch closely they can discern more than Rory says. Watch the butt of the club. He doesn’t drag it through the impact zone. It pretty much points to his midsection back and through. That’s a key factor. His body is rotating a bit, not just his shoulders.

Talk about leaving a few critical things out! He didn't talk about ball position, using the bounce, or how to set up to do so. He didn't talk about the need for soft hands and a gentle grip, without which you can't get the ball to climb the grooves imparting spin. He said once he needed to release the club, but didn't explain how. In this case, it is a rolling action with the hands at the grip. He didn't talk about the fact that you need to go further back than through, abbreviating the finish while getting the butt end of the club pointing somewhere between your belly button and belt buckle. He didn't talk about the importance of turning all the way through with the body. This is primarily a body swing. Just look at where his chest is pointing at the finish. Yeah, he left a few things out.

My Vokey sm6 still zipping them back with prov1 and TP5( might of made the groves a little illegal by over sharpening them ) but I can’t buy a new wedge every round ha
@TheNYgolfer4 жыл бұрын
Take note that Rory hit into an upslope which helps kill the ball. That's the most important aspect of trying this shot. They don't talk about that on TV and you can't judge the slope very well from your TV so you don't realize what happened. You just saw the result. Read a lot of comments talking about the importance of grooves. This may come as a shock to many , as long as nothing comes between the ball and the clubface ( water, grass, sand etc) a clubface that is perfectly smooth will spin a ball MORE than the same club with grooves. That's why they use slick tires in car races like Nascar and Formula 1 , as long as conditions are dry. A tire with a tread pattern will not grip as well because a reduced amount of surface area contacts the road. Same holds true for a wedge.
@randalllassila9090 Жыл бұрын
there's a video of Martin Chuck using this shot to kill the ball when hitting onto a green sloping away. It was a 50 yard shot. I suppose you need to have a long enough shot to allow for enough clubhead speed

@brandondornan95244 жыл бұрын
Nah, just keep the grooves clean and what ever you do accelerate through impact! Also helps with soft grip not tight grip
@markdelej4 жыл бұрын
Absoutely not. Take an old wedge and hard ball and you will get pretty much no noticeable spin at all. The cover of the golf ball matters so much here. The quality of the club face matter so much here. It’s like playing table tennis, obviously the stickyness of the rubber bat matters loads. If the bat rubber has no grip then you have no chance
@brandondornan95244 жыл бұрын
Wrong! To create spin, you need a great deal of friction and clean grooves. Some wedges have better grooves then others yes, and a softer ball does help alot yes, but all balls that aren't cheap top flite or something like that, will get plenty of spin, as long as you accelerate through impact. Most players decelerate at impact. You also need a perfect lie. No grass or anything should get inbeteen the clubface and ball. Also great contact period is always a plus! But soft grip, and a committed acceleration through impact, and decent contact with clean grooves will produce tons of spin! This is fact! Phil Mickelson secrets of the shortgame dvd is the best advice you'll EVER get!

A lot of people struggle with this shot because when they take the club away it’s too shallow. If it’s too shallow with a high lofted wedge you’ll tend to skull it. On his back swing you can see the shaft works up vertically instead of shallowing out and that allows the ball to ride up the face at impact causing spin.

Rory.......couple notes. Don't really disagree with anything you said, but......notice how you have rotated your body towards the target. Notice that the club is essentially an extension of the left arm on the follow through. Notice that the club face is skyward and not turned over. Those are critical components when working in the short game (and one hop and stop) shots. As an instructor, the biggest issues I see in short game are a lack of body rotation and too much wrist unhinging.

I can't understand why all of these golf instruction videos don't address the single biggest issue nearly every amateur golfer faces: clubhead lag. They all gloss over it like it's somehow a natural thing, but in my experience, all amateurs have overactive hands at impact, i.e., flipping the club. It's a byproduct of the overpowering urge to use the dominant hand to hit the ball, which creates a ton of problems, almost all of which are "cured" by applying even more destructive "bandaids" to the situation. Relax the hands and use your body turn along with subtle forearm rotation to control the clubface and you'll see results that''ll blow your mind. It's how Bubba Watson can have a swing that looks awful but is still able to hit any shot he wants along with swinging the club crazy hard.
