If I had to pick my favorite guest of all time.....I think I would pick Rory. Maybe Reggie Watts....maybe Bo. And I'm sure there's other great guests I'm just blanking on right now. One of my favorite non-comedian guests recently was Brett Goldstein. One, because he and Pete just CLICKED...but also because of that incredible ghost story at the end. I don't think I've ever heard Pete so happy. He's been asking that question, "Have you seen a ghost?" for years...and _finally_ someone was like, "I think I did.." and then proceeds to tell a genuinely intense captivating story that the skeptic in me had real trouble making sense of.
@avedic Жыл бұрын
OH! And Duncan Trussell.....though again, he's only been on like once, way back in the early days. But Pete used to go on Duncan's own podcast a LOT back in the day. In fact, that's how I discovered Pete to begin with. It's still trippy to listen to that episode where Duncan is telling a bemused and naive Pete about some guy called _Ram Das_ and "Blanket Man" lol. Knowing what Pete's spiritual path would end up being...it's hilarious to listen to Pete say to Duncan "his name's Ram Das? what is he, a wizard??"
@avedic Жыл бұрын
OH....and Taylor Tomlinson! She's been on twice....and I adore those episodes. Ok, I gotta stop, before I think of 10 more. I mean....this podcast has been going for over a decade. It's hard to remember all the best guests....

I love this conversation. It’s so hard to get there, the comfortability with creativity to get to the point where it’s an extension of your own expression that is not molded by your anxieties of what others think. I have struggled with this a lot with my own journey with music and when I was young I was full of piss and vinegar and could not discern constructive criticism. Now I long for that same tenacity to even do something basic or vaguely creative. There’s a lot of loss there and pain and that drives this for me. I have healed from it and I do embrace music in a different way but it is so hard for me to feel spiritual about it. I have moments when I am driving home from work and I just feel the need to play music, but then life happens and there’s something in the way- I know it’s me!

The cool think about mixing Pete tangents and Rory tangents is that eventually they end up intersecting again and then you got yourselves a topic which is a tangent formed exclusively of other tangents, which I like to call a supertangent. Or perhaps a doubletangent.

Just in case you read these comments, I have free audio advice for you. You will improve the audio for the opening and commercials dramatically by doing two easy things. Move the mic 3 inches away from where it is (to avoid the proximity effect), and lower the volume of the music 6 decibels. You're welcome. I'll see myself out. :-D

LOVE this episode! There are good guests, great guests, and top-tier perfect guests...and Rory is definitely in that latter category. I've already listened to this episode twice since it came out. Just hope the 3rd time isn't like a DECADE later lol... Speaking of which...another top-tier guest who's long overdue for a second outing: Reggie Watts. I mean, his voice is in every single episode singing the theme song. Yet he was only on once....like ten years ago. How do we start a petition to make that happen?? Reggie was set to retire from the Late Late Show...and now with the writer's strike, I'm sure he's got some free time! Those 2 are probably my all time favorite guests....along with Val tbh. I like the WMIW episodes just as much and never miss one. Oh...and I think I'd put Bo in the top-tier too. His first appearance was pretty chill and an excellent conversation....and then each subsequent episode, Bo slowly but surely seemed to lose his patience with....humans, and was quite keen on talking about it. But I love his direct honesty...and how different he and Pete are, while still having plenty of overlap.

TL: DR; I recount a short story featuring the kid “Dean” and Pete (both as adults) visiting an imaginary saloon in a scene that is part 40’s film noir, part Westworld. Dear Rory and Pete - For some reason, as I listened to your hilarious tale of Dean, a scene started to take shape in my mind. Anyway, I nearly puked from laughing at this podcast - especially the story regarding the “wise-beyond-his-years” philosopher, Dean. Being a lifelong weirdo myself, I “hallucinated” a scene just now featuring Dean and Pete. So, if you will indulge me, this is that story/scene. I hope you like it: I could almost see Dean, looking 35, but still aging backwards. Cool and collected, dressed to the nines. Then I saw Pete, strolling alongside Dean, into a smoke-filled Casablanca-style watering hole. In the background you could hear a soft, lilting man playing a grizzled, alcoholic tune. (He's known as Piano Man, so don’t call him Sam, if you know what’s good fer you). As Dean and Pete pour themselves into one of the bar stools riddled with splinters, Dean reaches into his pocket, pulling out a single Virginia Slims, no filter. The barkeep lifts his eyebrow, both titillated and confused by his own scary emotions toward this mysterious man. He leans forward, lighting Dean’s cigarette like a woman who should know better. Dean inhales deeply from his devil stick and slowly exhales into Pete’s face, like a boss. A large plume of smoke circles them both, nonchalantly. Dean points to a sturdy woman, drinking alone in a dark corner. “You see that?” Dean says. “That there is a real dame. But…” He smugly exhales another grey plume of smoke into Pete’s face. “She’s got blood in her waters.” Pete and the bartender both nod at Dean’s uncanny wisdom with an almost primal understanding - the understanding a man only gains from years of life experience….that and a bi-weekly circle-jerk with the guys down at the lodge. The barman goes back to swabbing the countertop with his time-honored, road-tested smegma rag. Overhearing their quip, the mystery woman, coincidently being a time-honored, road-tested smegma rag herself, swiftly approaches the men as if they were Nolan Ryan at the pitcher’s mound - with an evil look of anger in her eyes…and an imminent clothesline in her heart. Pete and Dean turn in horror to see this crude damsel, a woman raised on danger and Domino’s pizza, stampeding toward them. Fearless and unhinged, she points at them with a furious fire blazing unencumbered in her drawers. (She happened to be wearing her “Fancy Drawers” that day. The ones she usually reserved for Sundays, family picnics and general mayhem. Or as she describes them, “what them panties I got that ain’t got no holes or too many stains n’ sh*t.”) Those drawers. This was a ruckus indeed. Everyone in the tavern turns and stares, mouths agape, yet motionless and silent. You could hear nothing but an occasional heavy drop of urine or two hitting the floorboards. “What you say’ ‘bout ME?!” she snarled clenching her fists, ready to fight as if she had just been told Popeye’s ran out of chicken. The men gulped, saying nothing, afraid for their lives. Time seemed to stop altogether. Somewhere, off in the distance, a spider coughed. But just as suddenly as the whirling dervish began, it crawled to a stop. The delicate princess finally lowered her gnarled, oily claw to her side, turning to leave. There was an audible, collective sigh of relief from the bar patrons. Then suddenly, the woman’s neck whipped back around, whirring like a cyborg. She homed in on Pete, wincing at him like a badger passing a kidney stone. They stood face-to-face, chin hair to chin hair. He could feel her hot pastrami breath on him, but he would not move. Pete was frozen, afraid to breathe, afraid to blink. He wondered if he would ever see his family again. “This is it,” Pete whimpered to himself. He then squeezed his eyes shut, bracing for impact. His eyes watered up because he could still smell what her rock was cooking. She scanned Dean up and down with hatred boiling in her ruddy, egg-shaped eyes. Then she looked over and glared at Pete’s chest, her lips moving as she tried to make sense of his Seussical t-shirt. Her face frowned and forehead gathered in true confusion. Then, with no warning she grabbed Pete’s shoulders, pointed at his colorful t-shirt and screeched at him like a banshee from hell: “What YOU know about green eggs and haaaaaaaaaaaam!?” The End
