Honestly, Rory is so underrated. He's a normal bloke compared to most of the companions, and then goes on to be one of the most badass. He dies 10 times, He gets erased from existence, becomes plastic, he waits 2000 years for the woman he loves and manages to keep his sanity intact, he plays an active role in rebooting the universe, and on top of all that he puts up with Amy. Not bad for a bloke from Leadworth.

I suppose it was like Mickey with Rose. The Doctor brought them on before for Amy, for Rose. They were growing too attached to the TARDIS life and him - he brought something aboard to keep them grounded to home life, as it were. He wouldn't have originally chosen them, but they grew on him. They could see who and what the Doctor is, rather than the rose-tinted version that most of his companions see.
