Rory, the Australian Rail should give you an award for promoting their railways! Your video gives me another reason (probably the only one) to come back to Australia, just to try this railway. I visited Cairns & Brisbane separately years ago & I'd never thought of using the rail in my itinerary. Now it's on my wishlist. Whitsunday is definitely a "must" to go. It has the world's most spectacular beaches & seaviews.

The Spirit of Queensland was originally planned to have 3 Classes of travel. Economy, Rail Bed, and Sleeper Cabins. However, In 2014 the Government blocked the Extension of the train from 9 to 14 Carriages. It would’ve been amazing to travel on sleeper cabins on the route just like the Old Sunlander! Only the Spirit of the Outback has Sleepers now. Hopefully if the QLD government purchases new Carriages, sleepers will be brought back to the Westlander and Inlander. Great Review Rory!
@RoryDing3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I read about that, what a shame. Hopefully the they could bring back the sleepers one day!!
@lmlmd2714 Жыл бұрын
This is a real shame, and I really hope the idea gets revisited - either as adding sleeper cabins to the spirit, or a seperate motorail sleeper train that can take vehicles as well. This would offer to clear advantages to flying up and down the coast - a true sleeper bed and no need to hire a vehicle at the other end. This could make a dent in our terrible air travel dependency.

This was another amazing video, Rory. I'm looking forward to the next one! :)

The opening shots at Palm Cove were so pretty too. I felt like I had escaped lockdown for a little while - so great job! Hi Rory, Firstly, I’d like to thank you for making the immense effort to cover almost every long distance train in Australia. Even before COVID, the Spirit of Queensland train has been spotless in terms of cleanliness, meals were delicious, staff were friendly and sleep was relatively comfortable. It’s the highest level of rail service you can get in Australia and it’s amenities can be compared to trains in China and Japan. Have you ever thought about doing the Westlander from Brisbane to Charleville? Apparently it’s quite a pleasant journey, though the train is older. I’d like to see that. Also, after borders fully reopen, I suggest you do a Brisbane to Melbourne XPT train review.
@RoryDing3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I think the Westlander and the Inlander use the same rolling stocks, Queensland rail retired the sleeping cars a few years ago, now those trains only have economy seats. It's a pity you didn't travel to Australia around 5 or so years ago when you could have enjoyed travelling in Queenslander Class on board The Sunlander, now sadly retired. The premium fare was about $700.00 one way, but it had an actual dining car and a lounge car with waiter service. All meals were cooked on board by a chef and passengers slept in sleeping cabins so privacy was not an issue. I was very sad to see sleeping cars go to be replaced by the Railbed.
@smitajky3 жыл бұрын
I had the privilege of traveling on the Sunlander when it was brand new. Two days and two nights from Brisbane to Cairns. But it was hauled by a diesel unlike the NSW Sydney express ( which had steam from Albury ). I will never forget the scenic trip. The little sugar trains around Mackay. And yes, proper sleeping accommodation. It is sad to see that the standard of travel continues to degrade even if the journeys are quicker and cheaper.

I'm not sure that I entirely agree about the food. Perhaps I have unrealistic expectations, or a large appetite or perhaps it is simply because I am older, but for a premium product I found the meals, especially the lunch, to be lacking. This is a class higher than premium economy although not specifically called business or First. The presentation was poor, not even a covering over the base of the plastic tray let alone a table cloth. The lunch tray seamed to be a bit bare, no bread roll and butter, cheese and crackers or any little extras such as a chocolate. The lack of a starter or salad was again poor. The dinner looked better at least you appear to have been given a bread roll with the meal. Again the breakfast was lacking. I would have liked the continental option AND the hot dish. It would also be nice to be offered water as well as the one drink provided. Personally, having paid for the premium product, I would have preferred to pay more for better presented and better quality catering with more complete meals.

I think I would take Railbed one way to see the countryside and then fly Qantas Business Class back. One thing I ALWAYS have in my pocket whilst traveling (whether it be day or overnight) is a set of ear plugs … they come in handy to drown out children’s screams/shrills, people snoring, or seat mates that seem to talk incessantly. 🤨👍🏻. Rory, this video randomly showed up in my suggestions and as I live in Bundaberg, Queensland and have many years ago travelled on the train from Brisbane to Ayr, I decided to watch it. I have to say your entire video was excellent. I am now thinking how much I would like to make the trip (again) to cairns, but by train instead of flying. You did an amazing job of promoting this service and I couldn’t recommend it enough to anyone who is considering making the trip. Well done and thank you.

I'd have loved to have done it on the old Sunlander with proper cabins. The Spirit of QLD does look like a lovely service but I am a light sleeper and think the overnight stops and people moving about would work for me, which is a shame. I'd like to take the it from Cairns down to Townsville though.

Nicely done, Rory. We are well keen to give it a go now from Cairns to Brisbane

I can't imagine not liking the vibration on a train. It's like being a baby rocked in a cradle. Instant insomnia cure!

great video, we rode the tilt train from Brisbane to Bundaberg in 2007 when we visited Queensland, we were most impressed and happy we chose it over a bus! The service from the time we arrived at the Roma Street station was absolutely amazing and I would recommend it to anyone, young or old

Love your videos so much detail, I never considered catching a train in Australia until I watched your videos. Now I am thinking I might try some instead of just flying.

LOVE that they display when the toilets are available. it's such a small thing, but it's a genius addition. definitely putting this on my Australia bucket list, it looks like a great train trip to take! "i can't wait to be horizontal" big mood lol.

I love your videos. We did Cairns to Brisbane but in a sleeper car on the Sunlander which was just amazing. And we stopped off along the way. It was great and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
