I think all trains in Australia should have a dedicated business class/first class with ungraded seats(not what is currently offered which is embarrassing compared to other countries) as an option to make the public want to use trains again. I would definitely use trains more if seating was upgraded.

Another thing I would say - in the UK where I live, there is no need for you to check luggage before boarding a train, and it's a major reason why I travel by train - it's very convenient.
@RoryDing3 жыл бұрын
Checking luggage is completely optional, it gives you a peace of mind as you don’t have to find an empty luggage rack to store your luggage when the train is busy, especially if you board the train at an intermediate station. Yay! Another of those trains I have been on :) Haven't done business class in the tilt train, but economy was just fine for that length of trip. Did the one out to Longreach back in early 2020, but because of weather they had to use the tilt train to get us to Rockhampton where the Longreach train resumed its service. Really is what most of the long distance trains in this country should strive for. edit: It always amazes me that the narrow gauge system is run better than the standard gauge here edit2: Passing through the sugar areas reminded me of the funky little sight of the cane railway. Had a bit of fun catching sight of their crossings along the way, such an interesting crossing system they use :)

The prices also aren’t that good. In fact it’s shockingly bad value for money - it very often costs as much or more than flying, with less checked baggage and taking 6-7 times as long. Even in business class - flying Sunday with Virgin (Brisbane to Rockhampton) you can get a business class plane ticket for $236, be there in an hour and have a generally pleasant experience. The train is $185 for a business class seat (less comfortable than the one on the plane and you’re stuck in it nearly 8 hours). Flights are cheaper in economy with $126 for Virgin Australia, and $135 for the train. The train is useful for short connections - e.g Gladstone to Rocky or Ayr to Townsville, but it astounds me how full the train often is, of people travelling longer distances. If they put a luxury sleeper in so you could actually enjoy the 8 hours in style, that would make a lot more sense to me.

Caboolture is a suburb of Brisbane? Wow. When I visited in 1990, it was considered a southern part of the sunshine Coast, and not a part of Brisbane at all, at least according to my late uncle who lived there. It was also the first place I had Sizzler haha. Looked like a decent trip, but I feel considering the price you pay for business class, they'd at least include lunch.
@RoryDing3 жыл бұрын
Caboolture has been part of the Moreton Bay Region since 2008 so it definitely is part of Greater Brisbane now. And if you compare with the XPT, XPT’s first class is 30% more expensive, all they give you is more recline and 3-5cm of extra legroom At least tilt train it gives you 50% more space and the seat is much better 😂
@arokh723 жыл бұрын
@@RoryDing oh no argument about the overall superiority of the tilt train. I believe in the 90s, IIRC, NSW considered the tilt train as well, and did run an experimental service, but the NSW govt didn't want to pay for the cost of upgrading the lines, including electrifying lines that weren't, and still aren't, electrified. Imagine how awesome it'd be, for example, to have an electric tilt train service from Brisbane all the way to Melbourne.

Hello Rory, thanks for the latest train check. It appears Queensland takes rail more seriously than either NSW or Victoria. However the tilt train is showing its age. I am not suggesting Queensland invests in TGV trains (these are really for high-speed 300 kph use) but something capable of 160-200 kph and relevant for the distance of the trip you covered.
@RoryDing3 жыл бұрын
The tilt train is not the issue, the issue is the track, firstly this is narrow gauge and secondly the track condition doesn’t permit the tilt train to travel any faster. This is the common problem in this country, upgrading the tracks would cost lots of money that’s why we don’t have any high speed trains in Australia.
@tazzer93 жыл бұрын
north of townsville the track is laughable slow. The other issue is that whilst about half of the north coast line is very quick, its balanced out by 40km/h curves. so overall speed is somewhat average. The fact that the beerburrum to nambour duplication and realignment hasn't occurred is proof qld doesn't care about rail
@alexmcwhirter66113 жыл бұрын
@@tazzer9 Thanks for explaining. If QLD rail had money to invest (without reconfiguring the track) one suitable train would be our Alstom Pendolino (tilt train) which operates over the WCML (West Coast Mainline). I am sure Alstom would produce a version which would suit QLD rail. After all, Alstom has variants which are in service in many European countries. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendolino

160 km/h (the maximum commercial speed of Tilt train) is a great top speed for narrow gauge train. Rory I used to travel semi regularly between Brisbane and Gladstone on this train. It’s good to see some of the service aspects have improved, for example tea or coffee used to be $3.50 and was Lipton (budget brand) or instant coffee: something I considered borderline insulting for that price. The price of the hot meals hasn’t changed in at least the 6 years since I last travelled, but I never thought much of them and always considered that QR could do better especially seeing how well they can do food on the Spirit of Queensland. The other thing that frustrated me about this train is that it could the trip in an hour less than timetabled if a) pathing was improved between Brisbane and Nambour and b) Aurizon Network allowed the train to achieve maximum speed between Gladstone and Rockhampton. I do believe that it is limited to 100kph here, even though the track is of high standard, and relatively straight especially between Aldoga/Mt Larcom and Rocklands. I did enjoy your review.

I travelled on the Tilt Train many years ago to Proserpine. I’m confused. We travelled overnight, and our coach had a fold up TV screen that folded down into the armrests, with an option for live Track Cam from the front of the Train. I guess it’s a few years.

There are two types of tilt trains, the electric tilt train only goes up to Rockhampton, the diesel tilt train goes from Brisbane to cairns. You must have travelled on the diesel one 😊

I don't know why but I got really excited when I saw Elimbah station. I used to live in that area so I suppose its nice to see it

I was born in Rockhampton and went to uni in Brisbane in the 1960's. For six years I made this trip three times a year. Pretty sure it used to take 13 hours. Not really nostalgic video because I don't recognize anything. Thanks for the video.
