Ponselle sang very few performances of the role at the Met. She developed a fear of the high C's, and that was, they say, one of the factors contributing to her regrettably early retirement. Fortunately she and Giovanni Martinelli recorded the final scene; and she alone did the two big arias, “Ritorna vincitor” and “O patria mia.” Ponselle was to dramatic sopranos what Caruso was to tenors.

Onegin65....for a singer known for her fear of the highest notes...she acquits herself very well here....another favourite soprano of mine, Maria Caniglia, a darker, more intense voice than Ponselle's , sang " Sempre Libra" from Traviata in 1939 at Covent Garden in a live recording, omitting the high D.....she still recieved solid applause.

What about Maria Caniglia is an absolute mystery to me

Good, but nobody beats Leontyne's versions of this aria!
