Hi I'm a volunteer here. The red fox at 1:00:00 is wild, there are a number of wild foxes in the area up here and they sometimes come in from the surrounding Burnet Park. You're lucky to have seen one though, I've only caught one before after hours while it is cooler with less people. Red foxes were last part of the zoo in early 2018, since at that point all species on the back trail, between tigers and red wolf / elephants were removed due to concerns they could be stressed by renovations happening at the time in the vicinity. There are active plans to have more than just benches back there in the near future, though currently those plans don't include new animals in that section. As for the leopard / lemur exhibit, that is largely just done in summer when it is too hot for our leopard to want to go out, so since he would rather be in air conditioning anyways, the lemurs get access to the space as a newer environment for them / extra enrichment as well. Also for clarification, our elephant barn dog Cora stays overnight with one of the keepers rather than at the zoo itself, serving a unique role more for the humans than the animals, since along with being a great morale boost for visitors and staff, she also serves a key training role for newer staff, who can work with her before the elephants since she knows all the same commands.

Also I know that before the Komodo Dragon exhibit it was the former Indian Peafowl exhibit I was wondering why did you guys get rid of it and not have it roaming free like most zoos do
@bobfreds11 ай бұрын
@@TreySarver-p5x I’m not sure on the reasoning with the Peafowl because that was before my time doing any work there, but as of last year we do now have free roaming birds when the temperature is warm enough, with our flock of 24 Guineafowl.
@bobfreds2 ай бұрын
@@TreySarver-p5x I'm unsure what happened to the peacock, not that he was free roaming before, though as of last year in warm weather there are free roaming birds around Camel with a flock of Guineafowl, and yes I've been to ross park, nice place, shame they couldn't keep AZA since it was lost for reasons not directly related to animal care.

I guess I'm not the only one who keeps an African spurred tortoise . His name is Herman and he's almost 40 . Unfortunately the weather is chilly yet for him to be outside; yet we've had an unusual winter . Those warm days it's good to see him outside .

That's great, African spurred tortoises are great animals. Florida Winter is nothing compared to most others but it does get too cold for Sheldon some nights.

One of my favorite zoos to go to here in New York. Although I will say I miss when they had mandrills (I would have loved to see them in the Primate Park exhibit). Hopefully they’ll bring them back sometime in the future, I’m also hoping that one day they decide to add an Indian rhino either in with the white lipped deer or along the hillside with the takin and markhor.
