What a great coincidence, I have to do a very similar operation to a crappy old Harmony archtop with a bent, twisted (water damaged) poplar neck, and now I know exactly how to approach it. Yep, I'm going to throw the damn neck in the dumpster and make a new one from scratch. Thanks!

Very nice job, Jerry. Thanks much for showing us, especially the wedge and refinishing. Just so you'll know, a millimeter is just under .040" (.03937, to be precise), so .010" is about 1/4 millimeter.

Jerry, I get a little something out of every one of your videos. This time it was the removal of the finish on the neck. Even on my guitars, I have the "drag" that some of these finishes have. The shinier, and glossier the worse it seems to be. Great info as usual. Regards, Solomon

That was definitely a great video series to watch. I learned a lot from it. That's why I love watching your videos. The end result was magnificent. Even the back of the neck and how you made it slicker. I have refinished the back of a neck once but honestly I dont think I would have been brave enough to do it the way you did. To me that is just a testament to how much skill and expertise you have! As always, loved the videos. I seldom go away without learning something and that is priceless. Thank you!

Dang you do great work, Jerry! That's just beautiful work, and a beautiful instrument! I must say, as a guitarist and having known only one "mandolinist" in my 67 years, you've given me a great appreciation for the whole "mando" family. (Mandolas, octave mandolins, and the mandocello.) After watching a few videos of repairs of F-styles and your creation of one from scratch, I researched and compared them. Those fancy F-style mandolins sure look great. I just don't get that fretboard extension called the "Florida". They are just in the way and all the serious F-style players remove the frets and scallop them down. That makes it look like a mistake. But i guess it's become part of the story of the development of that body style. I guess Lloyd Loar designed it, and supposedly used it, or thought it WOULD be used by others. Yes? No? But Bill Monroe helped make that F-style famous. Did he start that trend of modifying the Florida? If I was a mandolinist, I'd have it completely removed and make it with a little point like a bracket. { But I guess purists would criticize me for bucking the trend and being a nonconformist. Anyway, you built an F-style from scratch and put it in but scalloped it down never to be fretted and used. Now THAT looks odd to ME. Another useless Florida put in for no reason or function. Just a throwback.

Have you ever "boned" the back of the neck? Its what baseball players do to their bats to seal the grain as tight as possible. I am sure there are better explanations online. But essentially you take a "bone" or something much harder than the wood and just "draw" it with the grain as hard as you can, and and it hardens up the finish by closing the grain. If you havent heard of it, or tried it, you should look into it.....just a thought as you mention you dont like the finish...
