Just had a plumber quote me $500 to change one valve and 1000$ to replace both. And of course, even though only one valve was leaking, he tried to upsell me to replace both. I sent him packing. Now I think I can do this myself. Thanks. You are doing a great service to us single, female homeowners who get scammed all the time from predatory repair companies.

You do have to open the wall unless you’re lucky and your box has threaded adapters like his. This is very uncommon at least where I’m at.

I have ones similar to these and the handle snapped. I bought the same ones your using as replacements and was able to separate the new one like you do. But I CANNOT break loose the one that I’m trying to replace. I have been trying and trying and it will not budge. Any tips?
@everythinghomerepair17478 ай бұрын
@@thomaslutz4528 for starters make sure you take off the frame of the box. Then make sure you are using a good crescent wrenches or other wrenches with a good grip. Finally make sure your old valves actually separate. There’s many styles where you have to cut the wall open because they aren’t made to separate. If that is the case and your old valve works you can probably buy a replacement handle at the hardware store.

It didn’t look like the washer drain tube went in the recessed valve box. Can I adapt my hot and cold washer valves which stick out into my laundry room wall 2.5 inches? Can I adapt them to fit inside a recessed box that is level with the wall, even though the washer drain pipe is not on that same wall? The idea being that I need the extra 2.5 inches of wall space.
@RoscoReviews4 ай бұрын
It may be tough to see in the video, but the drain tube for this washer is in the recessed box with the valves. It hard to answer how to adapt your setup without looking at it, but if you have a recessed box and the valves still stick out a couple of inches, I would think you could change that. However it may mean cutting into the wall to change how the pipe comes into the box.

My main shut off also leaks, so I just screwed an end-of-garden-hose valve onto my washer's shut off to provide a secondary shut off.
@RoscoReviews4 ай бұрын
That should work. it would definitely be an easy fix like that. I does give an extra joint were it could leak in the future though.

Did you replace that outlet w a GFCI?
@RoscoReviews4 ай бұрын
I believe the code here states that outlets near water sources need GFCI outlets, however the washing machine is an exception. I’m not really sure why. Either the washing machine doesn’t count as a water source, or since it’s behind the machine they don’t expect people to be using wet hands to plug things in it.
@arsenicjones91254 ай бұрын
@@RoscoReviews which NEC year are you on? NEC 210.8(A)(10) requires GFCI in laundry areas since the 2014 revision. I checked w the NFPA and they indicate only 1 state is so far behind that they’re not covered. The NFPA also states that that state is currently in process to update to the 2020 code. So all that in mind, I think you’re very likely incorrect here and need to change that outlet.
@RoscoReviews4 ай бұрын
You are probably right. I don’t own the property that this was located in. I just do the work that I’m told to. The property is older than 2014 so as far as code goes, it is probably currently grandfathered in to whatever it was at the time it was built unless you do major renovations that would require it to be brought up to current.
@arsenicjones91254 ай бұрын
@@RoscoReviews I’ve never met an inspector that gave a rats when your house was build. Not when it comes to something as easy as a gfci. All that said it’s not your job to fix if it’s not your property. 🤷♂️

What if i cant get my valve off? Like, its 20 years old and rusted maybe???
@RoscoReviews9 ай бұрын
If it’s a quarter turn valve, then sometimes it’s just the if you take the screw out of the handle and remove it, then you can turn the part directly with a wrench or pliers. If you are wanting to replace the valve like in the video, then you will need to turn the water off to the whole house or apartment.
@Cableman-hr2uu2 ай бұрын
you are lucky that the stop valve is screwed into the pipe, mine used soldering and the box is plastic, you can't even use a flame , there is no way to replace the valve.
@RoscoReviews2 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, at that point you probably have to cut into the wall a little bit to get enough room to change it out.
@MOPAC857 ай бұрын
Risky using those crescents. I avoid using them at all cost. Unfortunately sometimes that’s the only option you have though. I spent several years working in material management at a Nuclear Power Plant. 1 of my responsibilities was to document all tools given to the engineers and various other workers in the plant. There was a time when all Crescent wrenches were banned from being used due to so many nuts being stripped. Every size combo wrench and socket was available in abundance at the plant. There was really no reason to use a crescent. The main reason you might want a crescent is you may not know the size combo wrench or socket needed for the job and when you have to carry multiple combo wrenches and sockets with you that wasn’t to appealing or lightweight to do so. Taking a few crescent wrenches was much easier than hauling a very large tool box up and down stairs. Apparently what caused the ban to come into effect was when some workers using crescent wrenches stripped some nuts securing a highly important and very temperature sensitive valve. They had to shut down the entire plant to have these bolts sheered off in a highly flammable and radioactive area of the plant. Always use that combo wrench or socket at all costs. Crescent wrenches can sometimes turn a relatively simple & short project into a really long one.
@RoscoReviews7 ай бұрын
Interesting. I haven't ever had too much trouble with them, but I can see how it could cause an issue. being a handyman, It's definitely easier to carry a couple of crescents than multiple full sets. i usually don't know what i'm getting into until i'm there. So, having every size avalible in one tool saves a lot of trips back to the truck/shop.

Why not just changed the handle from old valve to the new one to have the color?

If you are using the exact same valve as a replacement you could swap the handles. If it’s a different brand it may not be interchangeable.
