Yet another great song from the pen of Dave McComb! The Triffids were among the best Aussie bands. They just never got the recognition they deserved. "Born Sandy Devotional" and "Calenture" are two of my favourite Aussie albums. It is very much the way of true art that the artist is gone before the art is truly appreciated!

So good. I bought Treeless Plain when it came out in '83, it quickly shot to my top ten favourite albums, and for a while there i bought every record The Triffids put out, and later picked up this on CD. I haven't read much about the band (excepting Clinton Walker's Your Name's on the Door of course) but surely the whole thing was all about one woman he never got over..?? RIP David McComb, 17 February 1962 - 2 February 1999

I was never into the Triffids but when I heard of David McComb's passing away I suddenly realized I was in the same primary school class as him! He was a nice guy.

Thanks from Sweden. Triffids were big in the indie-crowd here in the 80s and I just wondered what happened to them. How sad he died so early.

Calenture was a great album. I saw them backstage at a gig in Manchester at the time and they cracked a joke at my/our expense-something about we're going off, like cheese!

There's the rub. The absolute shining intensity of some may be part and parcel with their early passing. If he'd lived, he may never have been such a troubled soul as to produce such magic in the first place. Who knows? What we do know is, in his short life, he made his mark.

Something people may not remember is they contributed I think three songs to the Sweet and Sour TV which featured a band call the Takeaways that ran on the ABC in the 80's.

That’s what the Australian music scene was like in the late 80s. A lot of heroin, a lot of casualties. Still, it was an amazing time, the golden age of popular music was ending, but there was still incredible talent and a scene that turbocharged creativity. And from that, some standouts. David McComb, Nick Cave, bands like the Falling Joys, Hunters and Collectors. And a lot more. I was privileged to be working in a studio at the time. I know everyone misses the best parts of their youth and young adulthood and memory makes things seem better than they were. But being lucky enough to be recording music in a big studio, I only have to search KZbin to take me back and experience it all in my mind again. Midnight Oil, Celibate Rifles and, of course, INXS. Who along with the Triffids, were probably my favourites. I didn’t really like early INXS but glimmers were there and then Kick. A masterpiece. As was Born Sandy Devotional. This song has always filled me with emotion.

Majestic song. the grandeur of CALENTURE sometimes reminds me of THE WALKER BROTHERS. TRIFFIDS were up there with the GO-BETWEENS and- to a lesser degree-THE CHURCH who had some great albums too.

Totally true. Also you have The Saints from Brisbane of course, and Dave Warner and Chad's Tree from Perth. But i always tout the early 80s as the high water mark of Aussie music. Canberra, Tactics. Hobart, Wild Pumpkins at Midnight. Adelaide, Redgum. Alice Springs, Coloured Stone! All fantastic great Aussie bands. Not to mention Sydney and Melbourne!!

Why do people have to have to publicly pronounce R.I.P , toward someone of note ? Unoriginal , thoughtless and cheap .
