Tho not usually a fan of 'tour' videos, you've done a remarkable job here, Jason. Thank you for taking us around your beautiful grounds. I was especially taken by your little chapel; there's one near where I live that's been there since the 1930s erected by a farmer who had a roadside stand. Our Hort Club just had it's 67th Rose & Flower show this week; the first in 3 years b/c of Covid. I was thrilled to place 5th. You helped me identify 2 mystery rose bushes I have (Earth Angel, Iceberg) so I'm going out to label them right now, along with some veg that I started from seed that have been neglected! Thanks for a fabulous video! 🥰🌹

Hallo Jason. Thank you for your wonderfull and very informative videos. I am a gardener from Schleswig- Holstein, the north of Germany, near Dänemark.I propagate all my plants and roses for my garden and for customers and visitors from cuttings since 25 Jears.and because we have onlly dry and sandy soil a lot of modern roses will not grow in my garden. But all the old "Historische Rosen" varieties on their own roots grew here very well. It`s funny that we live in different countries and grew the same plants and roses. And it is funny too that you grew a lot of roses from Kordes and Tantau, both are local Rose Breaders that have their buisness near my home village. Do you know the roses " Mozart" ," Super Excelsa"," Ballerina", " Sweet Haze" and " Guirlande D`Amour" ? This are often blooming roses and they grew in bare soil very well and they are very easy to grew from cuttings too. I hope you are succesfull with your buisnes and your nice showgarden! Liebe Grüße aus dem hohen Norden von Deutschland.

Thank you for another beautiful walk through your rose garden The Valerien is a plant I grew up with and always had it in my mother's garden in South Africa. I'm now in the UK where they are snobby, but I have two shades of pink and a white and have flowers all summer. An old rose Penelope has been amazing after the hard winter and my Peace that I have always had in my life looks pathetic, but always manages to have at least five flowers and nearly no leaves because of the black spot. Very good in SA

2:44 I didn't know there was such a thing as a bush clematis. How is that plant about self seeding? Sweet autumn clematis is moderately invasive where I live. At 4:13 did you cut back that bee balm, or is it just genetics? That is some very dense growth. I love the variety of plants. You have some beautiful cultivars, some of which are native species where I live. Those Japanese barberries have some beautiful foliage, too. Do you have any berberis canadensis growing there that you could compare it to? I'd like to be able to discern the difference, because if any is growing on my property, it would be a rare thing. I think there was an attempt to eradicate barberry in the eastern US a long time ago. It didn't work, but they were supposedly pretty successful about wiping out berberis canadensis down here.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Жыл бұрын
Thanks - we don't generally have problems with seeding of clematis here, though I know you're right that it's a problem in some climates. The bee balm is pure genetics - just popped the pots in the ground and it did the rest.

Thanks for a lovely garden tour! For me it’s really interesting because I have a lot of the same plants as you, just a little smaller as I planted them last year and this year. I have ‘Lady of Shalot, elderberry Black lace and Vitex Agnus Castus for example. Vitex seeds, Monks Pepper is something horse owners often use. If you have a mare that behaves like a bitch 🫣 in heat, Monks Pepper makes a big difference. I think it looks a lot like Japanese Maple also.

Thanks for the virtual tour. Earth Angel is so gorgeous. In Malaysia she is sold under Hergozin Christiana. I have her fellow Parfuma sister, Rosengräfin Marie Henriette. The fragrance! What a delight. She is recovering from intense heat and is showing positive result. Can't wait to enjoy her perfume again. We are having hottest draught season this year with several death from heat stroke recorded for the 1st time in my country history. I brought most of my roses into the porch several weeks back, they are now budding. The only rose unfaze by the heat and continue to flower out there under intense sunlight is Japanese hybrid Robe d'Or, she is nearly a year old. The other Japanese hybrid Gabriel is still several months old, also under the sun and so far is budding without a problem. David Austin Jubilee Celebration is a bit bedraggle but she too is budding and flowering under the sun. Just not as steady as Robe d'Or. My 2 new Japanese hybrids, Creed and Blue Moonstone arrived yesterday. I would love to see how they perform. BTW, i gripped about how Jeri Jennings's leaves would turn yellow everytime i watered it. I think i know why now. She was sleeping. When you posted the crabapples blossom vid, Jeri began to bud. Her 1st flush of flower is over and is starting a new cycle. She most probably retains her 4 season lifestyle instead of blooming all year round like Jubilee Celebration and Desdemona. I missed Ispahan and Buff Beauty when they were offered several months ago. Still keeping an eye for them and Kazanlik.

Another fine tour sir.👌 The project beds are coming around quite nicely. The show is fantastic. It is very interesting how each climate area and regional location is uniquely different. While my temperatures are fairly similar to yours with the exception of your slightly colder winter temperatures, my roses had a few early blooms, but are now just budding with a roses opening. Of course the shock of moving from the low elevation tropic temperatures to this significantly higher elevation and much cooler overall temperatures probably has quite a bit to do with it. The farm looks wonderful.👏 Thank you for the tour.🤙

Blooms longish white clusters of blossoms w. are delicate & pointy tiny petals that when they drop all over the place look like confetti at weddings decades ago. What I love most, the peeling brown stalks/stems that remind me of cinnamon sticks. Wonder if your pink flowering one will be that way in 10 years? That Chicago Peace is lovely!

Hi Jason, I really enjoy your videos and appreciate how generous you are with information. The garden is really something. I do have a question. On helpmefind I see Daybreak says 'needs spring freeze protection'. And yet, there it is out in the field, so you obviously aren't moving it depending on weather. So, I would appreciate knowing exactly what is meant by 'spring freeze protection' and whether or not it depends in zone. And, along with the zone question, even here on the coast in an 8 or 9 zone, we still do get those bad winters sometimes. Thank you so much, and apologies if you covered this already and I somehow missed it.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Жыл бұрын
No worries. A couple of points: 1) yes, it would depend on climate. We're zone 8, so only the tenderest of roses would be damaged by our typical winter. Yes, there's always such thing as an atypical winter - so you're never perfectly safe, but we had a short stretch of -18C last winter with no serious loss of roses in the ground, so there's a little margin to play with. 2) the roses I grow in this video is Daybreaker (FRYcentury) a floribunda, I also see other roses as Day Breaker, Daybreak, and other variation - and they may indeed be different roses. Have a look on Helpmefind to make sure we're talking about the same rose, which is rated down to zone 6.

Wow! Your climate is ideal for growing almost any type of rose! The"Boulevard" is a stunning design! Black Lace elderberry requires a sheltered location in my zone and doesn't thrive in open areas, extreme cold temps and high winds; the canes kill to ground level in such harsh conditions. Japanese bottle brush is a favourite in my garden. Amongst many roses, Rosarium Utersen, Daybreaker, Westerland, Ispahan and Lady of Shalott are truly lovely. This winter I'll be testing Madame Hardy, Tuscany Superb and James Mason to see how well they handle the brutality of eastern Ontario winters without protection. Damasks and gallicas prefer ample snowcover but freezing rain poses a big problem for those two classes. A selection of North American species hybrids, rugosas and their cutivars, certain albas, even perhaps a handful of Asian species & Scotch roses will handle freezing rain on their canes, where the majority of roses and climbers cannot.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Жыл бұрын
Thanks Mickey. I don't get to test-drive my roses to their limits for cold tolerance, but I do hear that the Canadian-bred ones like Prairie Peace, Isabella Skinner and Betty Will are pretty tolerant - I suppose their close relation to some of the species is the trick. My cutting of James Mason didn't make it - but I'd love to hear what you think of it once you've put it through its paces.

Loved seeing the beds. 😊 Wish I was close enough to visit and shop! Do standard roses in containers need more water than other roses? Plus, I have other roses in containers (this is because I move regularly with my job), this year, the blooms seem smaller on some of them. I topped dressed them with new conpost and have given them a handful of 'blood, fish and bone meal.' Should I be giving them anything else?
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Жыл бұрын
Thanks Pauline. I suppose the extra wood on a standard rose might up their watering needs a bit. Blood fish and bone is a little heavily weighted to phosphorus. Alfalfa might be a good compliment as something higher in N.

I have a Lady of shalott climbing rose and I wanted to know how far away I can plant perennials around the base. I'm wanting to put Veronica's near them and munstead lavender.
@FraserValleyRoseFarm Жыл бұрын
It depends on the height/size of the perennial. Some creeping veronica varieties I allow to grow right up to the base of the rose because they don't interfere much. A mid-sized lavender (say 24" to 30" tall) you might want to give it a little more space so the stems aren't interfering when you want to do maintenance pruning on either plants - say 18 to 24 inches from the base. YMMV
