Rose Marie is TOTALLY right! Those shows, performers and writers, obviously, have stood the test to time because of their quality of talent. Comics today come and go but people still watch and laugh at Laurel & Hardy, the Three Stooges, Marx Bros., Chaplin, etc., almost 100 years later in Chaplin's case. Will any of these schmucks today be even remembered next year, let alone 100 years from now? Not bloody likely! Thank you Rose Marie for telling it straight!

I agree with you all the way Rose Marie. The Dick Van Dyke show is still my all time favorite comedy show. I watch it over and over. Todays comedy is to graphic. I want to forget about reality for awhile. There's always been bad in the world, but it seems like there is a lot more now-a-days.

This interview was done in 1999 and, unfortunately, TV hasn't gotten any better. I'm nearly to the point of buying all the older shows I like and dumping broadcast TV all together. I'd rather see quality re-runs than any of the trash that's offered these days!

The best thing about Dick Van Dyke is that it was intelligent. The show assumed its audience was intelligent and adult. The writing of today's shows is for twelve year kids. The fake, scripted "reality" shows is such an insult to Americans. Also the lack of class, you look at the kind of parties Rob and Laurie had and compare it to Honey Boo Boo? Come on, Rosanne had more class.

What a fun interview. Watching her and Morey Amsterdam together is television nirvana. Just found the blu ray edition of Dick Van Dyke and snatched it up on a blue-light special! Despite having seen every episode dozens of times, I love it more than ever.

Coincidentally, I bought the Dick Van Dyke complete series on DVD before the bluray box was issued. These are some of the best written and acted comedy shows on the last several decades; I think that it represents Carl Reiner's best writing and Van Dyke's and Moore's best comedic acting as well as Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam's finest work.

I agree completely. I'm on a huge Dick Van Dyke kick right now because I found the blu ray set for a truly excellent buy recently. I'm up to season two and loving it. The DVD box set was fantastic, but the blu rays are even clearer. I just wrote a review yesterday/June 19 and posted it on Amazon. Carl Reiner said in a recent interview that he would have loved to have written for t.v. today since seemingly no restrictions are in place. However, I think the restrictions of the early '60s compelled writers to be especially clever, and that's why good writing from back then holds up so beautifully today.

And yet, so many of the old shows are very realistic as realty should be, such as Lassie, Leave it to Beaver, and many movies of the past. People were real back then. Go for it Rose Marie.

I absolutely agree 100% with Rose Marie on how this business should be an escape. Every word she said whilst on "soapbox" is true. I don't want to know what they do outside of film or show...I am there to watch attractive people entertain with their lofty lives! I cant stand the no talent bow wows we have now as stars. I can see bow wows with no talent every day not the street where I live or work!!

The reality-based cheaply produced NOTHING shows of today can't hold a candle to the Dick Van Dyke Show and others from the 1950s and 1960s. Rose Marie is right on!

Yes, the lady has a point. But, growing up in the 1950s and 60s, I found the standard shows of the day dwelt in a place I could never get to. The people were impossibly glamorous, rich and capable. I knew I would never live that life. I wanted a taste of 'realism'. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning. Yep, it's gone too far the other way, adn today I despair of 90% of TV shows and just about all so-called "comedy"; but... action adn reaction. Maybe it'll turn around again.

I dunno. There was so much happening in that time period, and clearly Rose Marie didn't react to it well. I wish the interviewrer had asked her about All In the Family, or M*A*S*H and asked her about what entertainment was long before she appeared on "Wings". I'm 50, and am usually around people older than I, but some people don't get it.

Rose Marie is right -- modern TV is really bad, so much that last October I threw my set out! Really! One thing though: Rose Marie, with all due respect, if you don't like what you see -- TURN OFF THE TV!!! Go for a walk (or read a book.)

Although I agree with Rose Marie on many parts, she definitely contradicts herself. She says television in her day helped viewers to escape reality; she said viewers wanted to see Lana Turner in extravagance and things that they couldn't afford. But then, she says that television in her day was realistic and relatable. Either way, television in the 60s showed mostly middle-class white families. There's nothing wrong with shows today having a wider appeal and not requiring a constant censor.

The "wrong baby" theme was used on the "Partridge Family". Danny thinks he was swapped at the hospital and tracks down the other people who had a baby boy born on his birthday and of course the parents turn out to be Black!

Oh my god she said what was in my mind.. today shows are awful.. just crap.. the media is ruined.. there is no class in actors.. look at Justin beiber or miley Cyrus. I mean come on... Sure they worked hard. But what for???!! To be the way they are now?
