Wild West African rose-ringed parakeets (Psittacula krameri krameri) have rarely been filmed in their natural range. You can see them in this video, probably for the first time! Notice the differences between this subspecies and the more common, Asian parakeets. Observe their feeding and breeding behaviour.
Audio and video recorded on site in The Gambia, West Africa, by Florin Feneru and Monica Crugel.
Big thanks for Musa Manneh, official birdwatching guide who made this possible!

fashionfobie you are right, these are African rose-ringed parakeets, Psittacula krameri krameri. They are the West African subspecies. Thank you so much for your kind feedback! I’m going to publish soon a video about the Senegal parrots in the same place.

Wow! Finally some information regarding African Ring Neck Parakeets! I recently rescued/adopted one from the Denver Animal Rescue, about 3 weeks ago. Kiwi is still very shy and we know nothing about it’s history. We are building trust still and Kiwi loved the video! It was like, “That’s my Tribe” ❤️ Again, thank you for filming this amazing species. Kiwi is missing most toenails and parts of toes. Assuming the mother and/or father got a little excited with preening. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Keep up this amazing work. I can’t tell you how much this meant to me, to finally see this bird in the wild. You gained a lifetime Subscriber ❤️

Dear Tania, thank you so much for your warm feedback! I'm so happy to see that my work is appreciated by other parrot lovers. I'm back from Africa (again!) and catching up with comments. I hope to get back to The Gambia next year and film the parakeets, maybe in better conditions. I will also make a video with wild parakeets sounds, to be used for companion birds like your Kiwi. I'm recording mostly in my garden in London, where they come to the feeder. Give it time and Kiwi will settle in his/her new life with you. best wishes, Florin

Yes. It's ironic that we call them 'Indian ringnecks', but they have been first described (scientifically) in West Africa. They also colonised the Indian Subcontinent later than Africa. Long and complicated evolutionary story. I hope I will tell it in a future video! Thanks for your feedback!

As the German naturalist Wilhelm Heinrich Kramer published Elenchus Vegetabilium and Animalium per Austriam inferiorem Observatorum, which detailed the wildlife of Lower Austria, and his name was used for the rose-ringed popinjay's species name, I bet these popinjays were an introduced species in that country and that the knights that fought in the Croisees introduced them to Europe. By popinjay, I mean a "parakeet" or "parrot." By Croisee, I mean a "crusade" and it came from croisee, which is Old French for a "crusade." Do you think so?
@DiscoverPARROTS
@DiscoverPARROTS 2 жыл бұрын
The species name was given in honour of Kramer, but this doesn't mean that he described the species in Austria. I don't think that parakeets were found there in the 19th century.
