This is a great group, with lots of great material! My favorite by Rose Royce is I'm Wishing On A Star! It was covered by a few artists, but the original is the best! Unfortunately, the group had some inner turmoil, and they were no longer, but their music lives on!

One of the biggest differences between music today and music from back in the day....in today's world, everyone wants to be a tough guy, especially in matters of the heart. In the old days, the point of the music was to convey the raw emotional hurt to the audience. The musician wanted you to feel the emotion way down in your soul, even if it meant appearing vulnerable.

Seems like most of Rose Royce's hits were covered. In addition to this song, there were covers by Madonna - "Love Don't Live Here Anymore," Christina Aguilera -"Car Wash," Beyonce - "Wishing On A Star" and my favorite Rose Royce song "I Wanna Get Next To You" by Cherrelle

100% agree with you about covers. Many times I can enjoy a cover more than the original, but only when the artist puts their own spin on it. If it's just the same as the original, then I'd rather listen to the original. Aside from that, there's actually very few covers I can think of that I enjoy just as much as the original. That is, where I enjoy both versions equally. Here's two examples, though: - "Burning Down the House" by Tom Jones (Talking Heads cover) - "Higher Ground" by Red Hot Chili Peppers (Stevie Wonder cover)

Another spot on reaction and truthful commentary on “how not to do a cover”. My biggest problem with today’s recording artists is that originality is few and far between along with their talent. Vocals are helped by engineering gimmicks and the melody is a music sample from 45-50 years ago….

I can see that it matters to you, and it should, anyone a fan of music. As a DJ, knowing many of the originals -vs- the covers, you're right, if you are going to do a cover, there's gotta be a touch of the artist doing the cover. It's just as you said, if the cover sounds almost as good as the original, it's just filler or another song. Barry White did a cover of Billy Joel's "Just The Way You Are" and Barry made it his own, something you should check out when you have the chance.

Angela, on your question, I basically agree with you. A cover should not be a “copy” of every aspect of the original. A good cover (especially when done live) should acknowledge the original, and best case, it leads a listener to go seek the original. Great example of this: Nirvana cover of Bowie’s “The Man Who Sold the World” - Kurt made it his own, but also led me to discover the David Bowie original which was quite different, but also great. Many many “folk songs” were covers, like Peter, Paul and Mary doing Dylan songs-it’s a folk tradition, but each singer puts their own styling and flavor on it.

You make some good points! I'm on the fence about what you're saying though! It's hard to pick one side or the other! A couple of songs come to mind! Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrell and the other version by Diana Ross! 2nd Proud Mary by CCR and other version by Ike and Tina Turner! Very distinct interpretations, and so unique, they sound like separate songs altogether! Bonus song Heard It Through The Grape Vine by Marvin Gaye and alternate version by Gladys Knight And The Pips! This all makes for interesting discussions and conversations!

You should do a Whole Month of "I didn't know it was a Remake" and do the Original Covers. A GREAT one is "Whitney Houston's I will always love you". Although Many Talent Show have Teenaged Girls Sing Whitney's Version, Few of them know it was Written/Performed Nine Years Earlier, by Dolly Parton. The Difference in their Vibes are like Night and Day (I Always Preferred Dolly's Version, as it had a More "Pillow Talk" feel to it". But Many will Always stand Firmly on Whitney's.
@mickdenis6630
@mickdenis6630 2 жыл бұрын
The Houston/Foster collaboration is directly taken from Linda Ronstadt's 1975 recording. Foster went into Long Beach to get a copy of Dolly's record. The Record store didn't have copy of Dolly's recording. They had Linda Ronstadt's album Prisoner in Disguise, when Foster heard Linda's recording he said he knew what they could do with the song. Houston had already heard Dolly's record, and said she didn't know what to do with the country song, and wanted to record another song. I am not a musician, but my friends that are, say the arrangement was completely stolen from the Ronstadt recording, they just played with the melody line. When Dolly found out that David/Whitney were using Linda's recording as a template for theirs, she called David to give him the final verse. Which Linda had not included in her recording. David had to add 45 second to his arrangement which he had already completed. The big difference between the songs are that Dolly wrote the song as an ode to mentor farewell for Porter Wagner. The song was used as a song about romantic love in the movie the Bodyguard, which was not how the song was written (or it's original intent).

GREAT Reaction!!! You gave great examples to explain how you feel. Luther's rendition of "Superstar" was the perfect example!!! He made that song so much his own that it was almost a totally different song!!! I agree that if someone is gong to do a cover, make it your own, at least a little!!! I haven't heard Mary J. Blige's version of "I'm Going Down" but if it is as you say, a note for note copy, I don't need to hear it. Lol....I'd guess that I'd prefer the original because it's so integral to one of my favorite movies, "Car Wash," which is a part of the sound track of my incredible teens years!!! I also prefer Gwen Dickey's vocal qualities over Mary J.'s!!!

Sometimes covers create a new generation of fans and channels like yours are intelligent enough to research new music. With that said react to a 70's HBCU Funk band from the DMV. Great song Angela! This is a case where I learned a great new song from a reaction! I only knew Rose Royce from the title hit of the 1976 movie Car Wash. I'm gonna be looking into more of Rose Royce's catalogue! Totally agree with you about covers. They are almost always either so close to the original as to not bringing anything new or so out there as to almost be a total insult and travesty of a great classic.

Here are a few covers (in my opinion), that are better than the original version. “Got To Get You Into My Life” Earth Wind and Fire covered The Beatles (original). “Let ‘Em In” covered by Billy Paul, the original version by Paul McCartney & Wings. “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” covered by Walter Jackson, the original version by Elton John and “Memories” covered by Gladys Knight and The Pips, the original version by Barbra Streisand.

You may be too far along. the seventies, but you simply must react to. "I'd Rather Have You" by Earth Wind and Fire from 1973. It features a incredible vocal performance by the late Jessica Cleaves. In regards to vocalists singing cover versions of a song, the vocalist has to master the art of singing to the extent that he/ she is able to interpret the melody. Knowing when to bend, shade or extend a note and where. You also have to have a certain level of spiritual and emotional engagement with the song . And lastly, you should know the vocal tradition of your particular genre. These are the essentials in " making a song your own".

I'm Rather Passionate about Re-makes. MOST are either Recorded because the Artists can't Come up With Another Original Song, or they that think "I can do it Better". I Think of them Like I do Remakes of Movies. Some are Directors Thinking they can "Improve the Storyline" (Like "Spiderman" and "Batman"), or Simply want to Feed off an Already Established Movie (Like "Footloose").

Hi Ms. D., I am not sure how I feel about covers of songs; normally I do not like them, but there are some exceptions.. If a cover is basically the same song, U better sing it better than the original or as U stated why bother.. I guess one could add a song and time to a Show.. Ms. Candice Glover of A.I. did a cover of "I'm Going Down" changed some things, and I think did a wonderful job with her time, about a minute and 55 seconds.. (that is all the time they get on the show) ♠W.G.

Luther Vandross was a arraigner. who could arraign a song and make it his own. Mary J. Blige doesn't even play any instruments and she doesn't know anything about arraigning a song. She is just a vocalist so that would have to fall on puffy and his producers. Mary doesn't even write songs. When you think of modern day arraigners it would be D'Angelo, Raphael Saddiq of Tony Tone Toni, Maxwell, El Debarge of The Debarge group, Babyface, Jon B. Questlove & Scott Storch of The Roots.

The Bee Gees wrote hits for other people, e.g. Heartbreaker, Emotion, If I Can't Have You, Islands in the Stream, etc. But when the Bee Gees themselves recorded/performed these same songs, all I could think was, "Dudes, why are you singing these songs when the other versions are so much better?"😊🥰
