"I Wanna Get Next To You" is from the Car Wash LP, by Rose Royce. It was released in 1976 on the Soundtrack LP for the Car Wash Motion Picture.
"I Wanna Get Next to You" was released in December 1976 and charted in 1977. A soul single by Rose Royce. It is the third official single from the Car Wash soundtrack. The song has also became a staple on oldies radio and on adult contemporary stations.
Rose Royce is an American soul and R&B group. They are best known for several hit singles during the 1970s including "Car Wash," "I Wanna Get Next to You," "I'm Going Down", "Wishing on a Star", and "Love Don't Live Here Anymore". The group began in the early 1970s, when members of several backup bands from the Watts and Inglewood areas of Los Angeles united under the name Total Concept Unlimited. In 1973, this collective toured England and Japan behind Motown soul star Edwin Starr. The movie Car Wash and the soundtrack were great successes, bringing the group national fame, the soundtrack featured three Billboard R&B Top Ten singles: "Car Wash," "I Wanna Get Next to You," and "I'm Going Down." The first of these was also a number one single on the Billboard POP music charts, and "I Wanna Get Next to You" reached number ten.

I personally reckon the 70's was the best era for Soul music, with Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, Marvin Gaye, Teddy Pendergrass etc all at their peaking best. This luscious song just epitomises what the 70's & Norman Whitfield & Rose Royce merge was all about, sheer gutsy, full on righteous Soulfully quality tracks, one after another, it also marked the golden years of the Whitfield era, clearly the standout track from the 1978 Strikes Again album, a spacey love ballad with sublime vocals from Gwen Dickey

In the 70ies and 80ies I saw Diana Ross (2 x), Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Kool & the Gang, Stevie Wonder and Mr. Barry White (3 x) in Munich (Bavaria, Germany).
