It’s been 25 years since outspoken comedienne Roseanne Barr stepped up to the microphone at a San Diego Padres game and attempted to sing "The Star Spangled Banner." As many Americans will recall, the 1990 performance was off-pitch and shocking, to say the least. Barr - known for her brand of sometimes offensive humor, especially in the 1990s - shouted the lyrics to the national anthem and even spit on the pitcher’s mound. This is one of those dumb "right wing" controversies from the 90's. I'm no fan of Roseanne especially in light of her more recent lunacy. When this happened I was too young to really care much less pay attention to but 30 years later I still don't care. She didn't change the lyrics or make fun of the National Anthem. She's just a terrible singer. The Padres hired a comedian to sing the National Anthem. They got exactly what they hired her for. I don't really see where the disrespect is. The whole "You must sing the National Anthem exactly how it was originally intended" argument or it's disrespectful is bullshit to begin with. For one it was written as a poem. So it was never intended to be a song to begin with. Just because someone has their own tonal interpretation of the National Anthem doesn't make them any less patriotic etc. then the next person. Just an example of the right wing having no actual political stance so they have become the masters of deflection with fake controversies such as this one. For example all you have to do is look back at history. This "controversy" happened right around the same time that then President George HW Bush was plummeting in the polls over raising taxes after his "No new taxes" promise. So like I said. Roseanne butchering the National Anthem became the right wings deflection of the Bush tax reversal. They dragged it out for months too. She was front and center on "Right Wing Media" while the tax reversal was put on the back burner. Not that it helped much. The tax reversal and then the first Iraq War were the ultimate undoing of the Bush presidency and he never recovered.

I was there, as her backup (in case she didn’t appear). Tom Warner (her producer) came to me earlier afternoon to say all was fine. I did hear some of her rehearsal and it was done correctly. She was having trouble with the echo delay throwing her off. I had done the Anthem many times and learned to ignore it. An unskilled singer will tend to derail and sing higher and higher (which happened). She didn’t miss a word. I knew what happened and have defended her all of these years. Would love to talk to her sometime or submit to an interview. It is my personal opinion that making a mockery was not her intention. She gave it the “show must go on” finish. I was up in Press Level and could do nothing. In-person, the place was a madhouse and shaking. I saw them grab her and Tom Arnold and literally push them into the SUV Limo. The press took it from there.
