That's good info. I've never ordered direct from a tannery. One detail I've found extremely helpful is using District Leather and Rocky Mountain for splitting leathers down to the size I need. I'd never be able to do it cleanly and they will do it on small panels for a good price or even free. Total game changer that ups the quality of my projects.

There are several factors to consider when determining the quality of leather: 1. Look: Examine the leather's surface for any blemishes, scratches, or discoloration. High-quality leather should have a consistent texture and color 2. Feel: Leather should feel soft and supple to the touch, without any stiffness or roughness. 3. Smell: Leather should have a natural, earthy smell, without any chemical or artificial odors. 4. Thickness: Quality leather should be of consistent thickness throughout the hide. 5. Flexibility: Leather should be flexible and not stiff. 6. Grain: The grain should be tight and consistent. 7. Pores: The pores should be small and consistent. 8. Stretch: Quality leather should stretch slightly when pulled. 9. Burn test: You can do a burn test by taking a small piece of leather and lighting it. Quality leather will burn with a smell of burning hair and forms a brittle ash, while synthetic leather will smell like burning plastic and forms a hard ball of ash. 10. Brand reputation: You can also check the reputation of the brand or the supplier, by reading reviews or asking for recommendations from Experts. It's important to note that, some leathers are treated or finished to achieve a certain look, feel, or durability, so it's always best to check the label or ask the seller for information on the leather's origin and treatment.

Thank you!!! After an accident, I'm in a "4-wheeler"/chair, and have been wanting to get back into leather working. Started as a kid making holsters and then an Edward Scissorhands Halloween outfit, the Crow, etc. Don't have too much of my original stuff left at 46, so I ordered some gun belts and holsters to tear apart with my 12 year old Son, so that I can show him how to alter and stitch them back up properly. Pricing is outrageous for the poor quality!!! Been hunting for better deals than Tandy, as well as better tools than I used to have. Looked at the black Friday deals today at Tandy, then found you!!!! Exactly the information I was looking for! Thank you again!!!

Really great information. I just get into leather crafting and I bought leathers from both tandy and rm leather supply. I saw people recommend craftsman oak from tandy. I bought a 4-5 oz piece and it cost more than expected. I also bought a chrome tanned leather from tandy, but I did not make a craft yet. Two weeks before, I bought a piece called buttero from rm. It was insane! It has an unbelievably good smell and it is much easier to work with. I wish I have had this information before, saves a lot of money.

Tandy varies from store to store. The baseline location will have all your tooling and supply needs, as well as a reasonable selection of leather. Larger locations (such as the Sacramento CA store) is a full warehouse with a huge selection of leathers. Coupled with a buyer's club membership etc it quickly is on par with any specialty shop, you get to hand pick too.

Thanks for this great info! I could use some help from all you leather heads out there. I've decided to DIY a leather table cloth. I need a 9' x 4' sheet or hide that I could get this dimension out of. A couple of questions: 1) what leather would you recommend, please break it down for me I'm a newbie. (weight, temper, tanning type) 2) what would you recommend to weatherproof it with so I don't alter the color but it won't stain (also remember it's a table cloth so nothing too chemical heavy)? 3) what's the best value option that would still make a decent chic table cloth? I really appreciate the recommendations and help. thanks

Hey! I just found your channel and as a vegetarian that has been avoiding buying leather it has been really interesting to find out more about the process and make better decisions from now on. I was wondering if you have any video about the process from cow to leather? Is it always a by-product of the meat industry? Is there a breed of cows raised for their leather? Can you know how the cows were raised? I don't know if these are stupid questions, but I'd be interested in knowing more and I don't seem to find that info anywhere. Even shoe makers have told me it is impossible to know where the leather comes from. Anyway, great channel! Thanks for all the info.
