He reminds me of a presenter on a British tv chess programme for kids called Play Chess (I've just looked it up - the memorable opening titles are on KZbin); the presenter was Bill Hartston and had a similarly soothing voice. It was my favourite programme (for a while) when I was young!

During the second game, while Ne5 is a good move and winning, there is an absolute BOMBSHELL move here with Bg8!! that "sacrifices" the bishop in order to open the queen to the checkmating square on f7. Even with best defense, engine announces mate in 12. Some of the lines are absolutely amazing, showing the absolute coordination of white's pieces and the chaos in black's camp. 19:12
@stephendean7655
@stephendean7655 10 ай бұрын
No, that's not right as black would have taken it with the rook and then the Queen would have no support so white would still have had to play NE5

How is mate in 12 better then this? Remember, people are not computers, even a grand master often can't see mate in 12.

My favourite series on youtube right now too! Thank you Eric for all the patient and thorough explanations. To be honest, I watched many of your chess videos so far, and it was sometimes a bit hard for me to see your (in my perception only) arrogant approach... And in this series, I am totally enchanted by your softness, humbleness and respect to all the opponents, in terms the language you use (e.g. when you know for sure you gonna wn, but you still take seriously their now-totally-irrelevant "threats") :) Keep up the good spirit and much thanks again!

24:22 i really love that d5 line -- that ending is just kinda funny.... after all the attacking and tripling up on the e-file, black simply hides their king behind white's own pawn, and all the heavy pieces can do is stare at their pawn and just HATE it XD

At 14:00 I always love playing d4 right away. After the pawn recaptures I then play c3. If takes again you can sac the bishop on f7 and follow up with a queen check on d5 if the king takes back. It's called the haxo gambit I think

You mentioned the Légal Trap (Légal's Mate). When you showed it to us before, I thought it was something I might add to my repertoire. However, after looking into it further, I found that after 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bc4 d6 4. Nc3 Bg4 5. Nxe5 ... (exposing the white queen as bait for the trap) Black should just respond with 5. ... Nxe5. Black is up a knight vs. a pawn, and the threat has been successfully mitigated. According to Lichess (using Stockfigh 16), black is up considerably (-5.3).

I saw the bishop sacrifice, rook F3 and then queen sacrifice idea at the end of the last game! I actually paused the video and put the position on Stockfish because I was curious why Eric didn't play it. Turns out, it is winning but Stockfish still recommends saving the bishop first. Goes to show, Chess Masters' instincts are something else.

I feel like the only one who likes shorter videos, since sometimes I just don't have the time or attention span to watch even a half hour all at once.
