One of the comments sent in during the livestream asked about struggling with chess notation. I am one of those who had to learn chess notation twice. I began learning chess in the 1960s, when "descriptive notation" was the norm. Thus, instead of 1.e4 e5, games would begin 1.P-K4 P-K4, with each move being notated from that player's side of the board, with the back rank being numbered as 1 for each. It was common until I was around 20 years old, when algebraic notation came into being. Both systems work just fine, with algebraic being a bit terser, and arguably, it is better for the square e4 to mean the same square for both players. Another advantage of algebraic is that there was a descriptive notation for English-speaking countries, one for Spanish-speaking countries, one for French-speaking countries, and I presume others. Algebraic created a more globally-consistent way of notating games.

Nice games. And it's great to have the time stamps, that show the openings. Thanks, Eric. And best wishes from NM Mike Pastore, and your fans at the Ithaca Chess Club.

1:53:54 Eric noticing the ratings refund, he then later notices how the loss got removed from the tournament results and doesn't mention it again until 2:23:01

Having the rating refunded is good but playing a cheater might also have cost him time (he might have beaten the player in less time) and might have been able to play more games, score more points, and perhaps place in the tournament. Of course the cheater may have played other games before getting caught. I guess red flags are the pace of play (never a quick move) and then accepting a draw in a winning position but with little time (not enough to check moves in a time-pressured endgame). I don't get the point of cheating...

No matter how bad things get, Rosen never seems to lose a chess game. It's almost as if Zeus and Poseidon are hurling thunderbolts from Mount Olympus at the chessboard to make sure of it. I liked the "two pigs on the seventh" as Soltis would say.

very good arena eric. even if you are fundamentally the strongest player in the event still very hard to get a top finish. towards the end you mention ICC and reporting, currently you need to email them, if you go to homepage and pick "fair play" from bottom of page, their is an email address to use. last weekend I used that to report a technical server issue, and as I had game recorded thought best to report it so used that address, got a reply monday morning, very quick. they said in the reply "We're also working on a more formal reporting feature on the platform and hope to have that implemented soon"

Time management is my worst enemy. Was doing well in the 30 min category, approaching the 1200s, but the games felt too long. Switched to 10 min and bottomed at ~700, most losses being time outs.. Now around 900, still timing out more often than I'd like.

There needs to be way more verification the higher ranked online players are (too many multiple accounts being used also), but it seems like cheating is almost welcomed in Chess now, even at the higher levels.

Gonna watch until the first interrruption ad comes up, then that's it. Predicting 4 mins max. Hella oppressive. You know Chess-Network? His vids are the best because he never allows the interruption. The content there is too valuable to allow it

It was 7 mins, not 4. Still unwatchable at that rate. Cya next time with the 5-layer adblock. You used to be cool. Imagine giving a lecture back at the St. Louis chess club, only every few mins allowing some interruption. Teaching quality plummets. As Simon Williams would say, f a duck.
