Prompted by the recent Hurricane Helene that hit Florida and other states along with our trip to the Oregon Coast, which is a tsunami zone, we decided to pull out our But Out Buckets and check them. If our lives were to depend on the contents of these buckets, we have work to do to reorganize and replace many items.

Good morning. We live in WNC, and we're just hit EXTREMELY hard by aftermath of Hurricane Helene. So many lost homes and billions of dollars in damage. Many still without power and no cell service unless they can get out and drive to places with Starlink. We lost power for 7 days and couldn't get out for 2 days, but God's grace and great friends were able to drive to check on family. The things that helped us going a lot was preparations I have learned on your site! Thank you, and carry on! Please remember our small town because several lives were lost!

I’m a life long Floridian, as I’m preparing for Milton, I was watching you 😁 May I make a suggestion for your buckets. It’s always a good idea to have a copy of your birth certificate, insurance papers, marriage license and emergency numbers. If your phone is damaged or lost taking a picture of these documents will not help you. At 67 I’ve lived through many of these emergencies including wildfires. Those documents are critically important especially if government buildings are off line for any length of time or destroyed. Praying for all affected by Helene and for all of Florida in Milton’s path!🙏

Have you ever thought of packing a Kelly Kettle or similar item? It uses whatever fuel you find around you, leaves, twigs, etc., making carrying fuel unnecessary. It would allow you to boil water, very quickly, and cook at the same time. It also gives off a little warmth. It comes with various accessories, according to the model you buy.

I appreciate Pam & Jim so much. I live in WNC in Hendersonville near Asheville. I have been watching you and was prepared for about a year. Things I needed that are on my list is solar power generator you just did video on. I need a solar back up charger for phone. We had no cell , internet, power but I could send out text now & then but with no phone charge not even that. So hard to get around with all trees & power lines everywhere. Lucky this is rural so a lot of people , including myself, own chainsaw. One of the best things I used was solar lights for stairs. They are so much brighter than other lights they are little triangles. I gave sets of 4 to several people they could use at night to see to get around. I’ve been through hurricanes but never lost all utilities but gas. I just wanted to thank you. I had canned & dried so much I was able to give food to people who had not prepared. Thank you for these videos. You are little preparers angels

How about making your primary buckets the Home Depot orange buckets. Then get another color, Menards Green, Walmart Blue, Harbor Freight Red for your secondary bugout buckets and then another color for your tertiary buckets. You'll always know what buckets to grab 1st, 2nd and third. Also, cut a 6 inch PVC 1/2" or 3/4" to go on to the handles of the buckets to make them easier to carry.

We mostly used toolboxes with handles on the top and sides and sturdy latches for our camping / evacuation supplies. We bought a bunch of them from Canadian Tire when they were on sale years ago. They are approximately 18x12x12 inches. They are designed to stack on top of each other and there's less wasted space in our vehicle, and our axe slide nicely between them (they're a little narrower at the bottom than top.

Where I live, there would be shelters within a reasonable distance. But our household evacuation plan is to avoid shelters if at all possible, there are safety considerations if you have to go to a shelter. I also have dogs to evacuate with us, so are fully prepared in case there is no safe shelter for humans and dogs together. (for anyone with pets, it is well worth doing some training and practice with them in case of emergency. Crate training, travel crate training. Leash training, muzzle training)

I’ve worked in a special needs hurricane shelter. Cots were provided, but no pillows or blankets. You have to bring your own and many did not bring anything, expecting it to be provided. This was set up in the corridor of a high school. Meals were provided. Generators went out during the night and the local sewer system went down by five in the morning, preventing us from flushing toilets. Not fun! My parents just evacuated to our home because hurricane Milton is making a beeline for their area. You can get Life Straws to use to filter drinking water. Inexpensive, but filters pond or river water for drinking water.

These are great ideas for bug out buckets; thanks for sharing these. A couple of additions that I would make--add water purification tablets to the water bottle bucket, a fire suppression blanket to the cooking bucket, and I learned the hard way to store the batteries separate from the flashlights, in case of corrosion. After recently experiencing Hurricane Francine in South Louisiana, I found that the batteries had corroded in the lantern, rendering it all useless.

Don’t forget an extra pair of eye glasses!!! We live on the bank of the Red River of the North and made it through two major floods with Eight foot sand bag banks behind our home- i feel great sympathy for the folks in WNC! The damage water can do is scary! the item most coveted in Fargo during our floods was- that extra sump pump! If water leaks through your wall of sandbags - you need a pump to pump it back to the other side. Never under estimate the need for high protein snacks- the long days needed to fight a natural disaster require more human fuel than you would expect!

Thank for all you and Jim do to help inspire people to take responsiblity to help themselves. Possible additions: 2 bivy sacks. All different kinds out there. Will save your life from exposure. I have a summer weight down sleeping bag that packs to the size of my hand. Inside a bivy (even a mylar one) can be toasty. Multiple sharp knives like a Morakiv, vile of baking soda and salt. In every bucket: Bic lighter, mylar blankets, granola bars. Dump the bags of tuna and opt for small cans of tuna, sardines, mackrel. All cans to have a pop top so no can openner needed. (although I'd always have can openner too) Clothes: Cotten kills in exposure. Good to have some cotton item but I'd opt for polar and/or light wool with a water resistant windbreaker instead of sweatshirts. (Packs well and light). Always wind or rain pants. So these are my thoughts and as you say, everyone has different needs, these are mine. Thanks again for your great videos.

I never thought to use buckets - that's a great idea. I know I couldn't carry a 50 lb backpack (and I'm only 56!) and walk miles and miles. With buckets, you can walk a short distance then stop and rest by sitting ON the buckets too. You definitely got me thinking about what our biggest threat is in my area. We're not in tornado alley, we don't get blizzards (we get snow, but blizzards are extremely rare), we're not near the ocean, there's a small river not far from us but to my knowledge, it has never flooded as high as our property is located, we don't get earthquakes... Probably the river is our biggest threat.

The blue sunami lines on the road got you thinking eh? Off topic but what about the sneaker waves. They say never turn your back on the ocean while walking the sea shore because of large rogue waves that will knock you down and drag you out to sea on a rip tide. Yikes! I love the Oregon coast but I do keep my eye on the tide. Back on topic maybe there is a way to set up the go items but cycle through them too so they don't sit for so long? Good video, as usual.

Yes! Before I bought a stash of them, I tried them out as scrambled eggs and also to use in a muffin recipe. They were surprisingly good and worked perfectly in my recipe. I can't say how they compare to home freeze dried or dehydrated but I do not hesitate to recommend them.

I was watching this and I think it is a great idea to have a emergency buckets however I would just make one bucket somewhat empty with a check list of to grab off the shelf in your current working pantry for the food if it items you keep already on hand that way you aren't wasting any that has become so stale just my thoughts but an excellent idea to have it all quick to get it and go in a emergency

This might seem like a silly suggestion but round buckets don't seem to be the best use of space as square buckets would be. I have gone to mostly square storage containers in my kitchen and fridge for the same reason. Clear containers with latching lids would be even better even when labled.

We live in earthquake territory. I do what you are doing, review my supplies every year in October because the two big emergency events in our area both happened in Oct. So that is when I review every year. There is no way to know if the situation would be sheltering at home when public services are down (water, sewer, power) OR if our home would be safe to stay (depends on the location of the epicenter.) I have grab and go kits in the house, more always in the car, and long term shelter-in-place storage to try and cover for each situation. My shortfall right now is water for car but I do have life-straws. Will get those coffee filters. . .good idea.

I cannot wait to see what, in the end of your process, you decided to keep and how it is organized. I have, many times, thought about doing something along these lines but have never actually done anything about it. Living in the Midwest like I do our threat is usually a tornado. You've got me thinking again that's for sure.

You are always so thorough.....love that! We have a yellow lidded black totes from Menards or Home Depot that we use specifically for cabin to and froms. I'm wondering if those might stack and secure on Blue better. Maybe put your clothing and personal items in duffels...double bagging the contents for waterproofing. They would squash down and allow more room for other things. Does blue have a hitcher receiver? You could get a hitch hauler and secure a couple of heavy totes as well.

I watched the original bug out bucket video when it came out five years ago. I think I started following this channel when you posted the meals in a bag video. I know you’ve talked about redoing some of your videos but please don’t delete the originals! I’ve watched all of them at least once and many of them multiple times. They’re like instructional encyclopedias and it would be too sad to lose them. I would have never had the nerve to start pressure canning without the videos of Pam using her gadget.

I suggest you designate a bathroom bucket ~ microfiber towels/washcloths/soap/shampoo/deodorant/q tips/a comb/clippers/scissors/a small mirror/of course tp/wipes just to name a few. Burn ointment/bug spray/cloth bandages/a folding cane and an umbrella are also useful items. Hope some of these will help.👀

K.I.S.S. Keep it simple Sam is what I need to keep remembering. Food buckets should be checked minimum yearly, plus can opener, sporks, in same bucket, ( many canned food can be eaten from tin no cooking) Bucket for fire stuff , stove, billy pot, plate, cup, (or a campers mess kit) morakniv knife, water bottle and filter, first aid, emergency blanket, flashlight ie: ... survival bucket Luv the idea of labeling buckets 1, 2, 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 If only 3 buckets also make a 3.5 bucket ready with the best of buckets 3, 4 , 5, 6 If only 4 buckets, make a 4.5 bucket with best from 4, 5 , 6 Organization is key. You need to be able to find things fast oooo, Handcrank flashlights are great. Do your flashlight batteries still work ? My flashligts are solar/handcrank style

A good video! I have some items ready in a backpack but honestly I couldn’t carry that very far at 66 years old. My main concern is I can’t keep a lot in our truck because we live in southern Arizona where it gets hot in summer and cold in the winter. I do have some cartons of water that I purchased but that is not enough. Our space is limited inside the truck. We have a HUGE Cane Corso dog who takes up the backseat and I will NOT leave him behind. So I pack food for him as well. We have one vehicle too so I need to think more on what to do if he (my partner) is in town and I am home 😬
@LS-lb7pw
@LS-lb7pw Күн бұрын
That can be a tough one to figure out, especially if you have to evac and your partner has the truck. I live in a very rural area an hour from any city, but I also have neighbors that help each other in times of trouble, evacuations. We have an evacuation plan as a group + everyone has a ham radio to call for help, as from experience we can't rely on cell phones You don't need a ham radio license to use it in an emergency either, so perhaps you, partner and a neighbor could have a plan for such situations. Just a thought.

@@LS-lb7pw thank you, we live rural and an hour from town. Our neighbors are good people but most are older than I am. I’m 66. None of us really know each other well, most are retired military so they are reliable but again it’s an area where all are retired people. I will look into the ham radio though. I know a neighbor to the south of us has a tower. I don’t know them at all but maybe it’s worth a ride over there to talk to them. One other issue we have here is we live on the border and most people are very on guard here. I wouldn’t just walk onto anyone’s property here.

You're right about preparing for disasters specific to your area. For my area, the most common disasters are wild fires & maybe a stray tornado here & there. However, there could be unexpected disasters that defy prediction such as the Polar Vortex that struck as far south as South Texas & large hurricanes that chugged inland as far north & west as Dallas. Who could have foreseen the terrible freezes in 2021 & 2022 or a far reaching hurricane like Harvey? So I guess it would behoove us to prep for less likely disasters as well as the more common ones. Regarding people who refuse to evacuate, I have mixed feelings about that. I've hunkered down & sat out dozens of hurricanes in my lifetime. Believe it or not, evacuation is basically a rather new strategy. Decades ago, there were no government mandated evacuations. People stayed or left as they saw fit to do. Think about a worst case senario: a stray hurricane hits a major northeastern metropolitan area such as NYC... How could the authorities evacuate a city of millions of inhabitants who have traditionally relied upon public transportation & do not own a vehicle? Some people will say that a hurricane can never hit that far north... They also said that a devastating freeze could never hit South Texas, yet it did & not just once, but twice... The takeaway? Plan for the most likely disasters in your area. But also at least consider planning for unlikely & unusual disasters too.

I would think a survival preparedness food bucket like the ones sold at Costo would be reasonable to replace all of the individually packed food for three days. Also, it won’t spoil in a year or two as your home packed food did. You could eliminate one bucket as most of your food would be in the preparedness food bucket.
