Your roses are looking wonderful Nik and now I think I've fallen in love with Hibiscus. So pretty. I really enjoyed our visit to David Austin's place in Shropshire. The roses were past their best which I was expecting but there was still plenty of colour and I was very well behaved and only bought four. I can't believe that I'd not bought Emily Bronte sooner as her fragrance is amazing. The others were Harlow Carr, Ancient Mariner and Tottering by Gently. I was in my element and it was the highlight of the holiday as I'd been wanting to visit the place for such a long time. I wondered what my own garden was going to be like on returning but it just involved me doing a lot of deadheading but I quite like doing that. Have a great weekend Nik and thanks for the tour.

Hi Wendy. Glad to hear that your visit to Albrighton was a success. 4 roses is a good haul! I was frustrated a couple of weeks ago when I drove a friend up to RAF Cosford Air Museum, which is almost literally just around the corner from David Austin, just a mile or two - he had no interest at all in roses, so I couldn't persuade him to go there as well. Probably for the best - could I have resisted the temptation? I did go there a few year ago though - and I didn't resist then. Yes, the hibiscus do look good in August and even the foliage is quite attractive, but it is mainly an August flowerer. There are quite a few available colour combinations available now. Enjoy your weekend!

Your garden is still very colourful . In fact , your second flush is better than my first!!! I’ll have to pinch that phrase “ I’m trying to like it “ 😂

Thanks Gav. I've been very happy with my roses this year. That Fragrant Delight has really shot up and impressed me in its 2nd summer - I wasn't that taken with it last year, which just shows you need to give a rose time to show its full potential. The Gabriel Oak has also developed strongly - and I already thought that was a very good rose.

@@nikkonch Agreed re time etc Nik. I've been a bit perplexed by Penelope Lively so far this year (1st year). Very spindly but now full of flowers which are actually lasting some 2 weeks or more. Do you have PL ?

@@gavinparry5426 No Gav, I didn't buy Penelope Lively when she came out. Various reasons - I didn't really want another pink rose, I didn't want to risk a rose that was not a proven good rose, I have a list (haven't we all?) of roses I really want, and finally I am fighting to find space and DA roses tend to be quite bulky, At some point I will have to decide which roses to cull from the large selection I bought last autumn - and getting rid of a rose is not easy, especially if you think that maybe next year it will be much better than this year.

What can I say other than your roses look beautiful Nik. They obviously like, and respond well to, the attention you and your Wife give them. They all look so healthy. Do any get any help in that respect? Obviously the ones in pots get watered, talked to and fed, anything else? Thanks for another lovely tour around your garden. Cheers! P.

Thanks Peter. So far this year 2 feeds of Toprose and 2 sprays with Roseclear - although as the season wears on I am seeing increasing outbreaks of black spot and rust, particularly on the older leaves, so another spray is on the cards in the near future. I try to remove diseased leaves reasonably frequently, and I deadhead and water most days - the pots particularly dry out so quickly and can soak up a good few pints each evening, especially the larger ones with lots of foliage. But you will notice I don't show my climbers on the dark north-facing fence very often - too much effort to keep them in check and healthy after the first flush!

Hi Nik, Thanks for the info. I know some roses are just more suseptible to Black Spot than others. I know the ones I have that have a problem with B.S. so might try something on them next year. Fortunately my largest climber, Mme Alfred Carriere seems to be a healthy rose and The Pilgrim quite good too. Cheers! P.

An impressive show of your roses on their second flush most of which seems equal to first. My roses have had little attention and I’m so embarrassed to show them. Credit to all your efforts Nik.

Thanks Ken. Sorry you haven't had the time to get your roses looking their best - I realise I am lucky to have the luxury of being retired - and a wife who will occasionally help with the deadheading. If it's any consolation I have really neglected my tomato plants this year - the cold weather got them off to a slow start and I just don't feel motivated to do all the things I should be doing, especially since they are only now beginning to provide fruit - and August is very late for them.

I think you have a beautiful garden .Now I don’t know if I should get Desdemona or tranquility next.I don’t have room for both
@nikkonch
@nikkonch 2 ай бұрын
Thank you. I would say that Desdemona is the one I prefer - it has beautiful, delicate, bobbing flowers which glow in the evening or against a dark background - and a good fragrance. It is a tad shorter than Tranquillity, but T. has little scent and its flushes don't seem to last as long. Tranquillity's individual blooms are pretty but not outstanding, and I think Desdemona's are.

@@nikkonchThank you so much for your advice I will go with Desdemona I will wait and get a bare rooted one as I seem to do better with them than potted ones.
