I was so surprised to see that it was snowing last night. Makes me wonder what sort of Winter we're going to have as November seems very early for the first snowfall. Your views look really nice Nik especially when we can watch them on KZbin! Snow is lovely as long as you're not having to drive somewhere.

Yes, Wendy. Lovely to look at, but I was worried because I had to drive to a nearby village for a dental appointment this afternoon - fortunately the snow was not lying on the roads and there was no ice. It is early, isn't it? But maybe it's just a one-off and we'll have a heat wave soon!

Hi Nik, lots of snow there ! It does look really pretty but we escaped it somehow. The forecast had snow for us but it's missed us thankfully. There's a definite chill in the air, we're expecting -6/7 this week I've been out with bubble wrap, fleece and builders bags so my garden looks like a ghostly Halloween scene now ! 👻 Stay warm and thanks for the look around.

We were reassured yesterday that it wouldn't snow here. I don't know why I pay any attention to the forecasts. Having agonised for days earlier this month before I finally opted for a Penelope Lively bareroot rather than an Olivia Rose Austin, I was sent a DA voucher for my birthday, so Olivia is winging her way to me now too, Result! Not ideal weather for planting bareroots in the ground but I think I'll pamper Olivia in a pot in the unheated greenhouse until the spring, but I have got one or two more non-DA bareroots coming which will need to go in the ground. I am giving away some of my roses that have disappointed me, so the garden won't be too crowded - hopefully the roses that remain will get the message and up their game to keep a place on my "team"!

@@nikkonch Hi Nik, Penelope and Olivia are really lovely. Happy Birthday ! for whenever the big day is :) Roses🌹always the best gift. The snow will probably be gone in a few days so as long as your ground is not frozen solid you're fine planting bare roots just as long as you are ok to do some digging but do get wrapped up it's so chilly at the moment. Olivia will be fine in a pot. I've been really impressed with her in the first year she just kept flowering. I've got Emily and Eustacia to plant they've just arrived, they are in a bucket of water in the garage until I can plant them tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing what you plant and what you decide is going, bare root season is exciting but we need the weather to be kind to us !!!

Watch the weight of that snow and ice nik. I know I had a few breakages last year with tall roses buckling under the weight. I ended up going out cutting some back a little further. Looks lovely though. :)

Indeed you mention it there, I maybe wrong but I think if that snow freezes over into ice, the weight somehow increases or maybe just the chance of snaps increases

You were right Jay Jay. We weren't expecting any more snow overnight after a good thaw yesterday, but we got it, and below freezing temps too, so a lot of ice. The Lady of Shalott's thin stems which were horizontal yesterday surprised me by springing back up again, and the flowers still look good, but a VERY thick flower-topped stem on a Sweet Honey which was vertical yesterday seems to have broken somewhere down below - but there are other good stems on that, so I am not distraught. I received an Olivia today, the last of my DA bareroots - I don't know if it's my imagination but the stems on all of them seem OK but less substantial than in previous years - is it my imagination, bad luck, different varieties, or has the poor weather this summer held them back?

do you often get snow there?
@nikkonch2 ай бұрын
We are in Herefordshire which is generally milder than areas north of us and not seen as a particularly cold part of the country (although it is a wet area). We probably have snow every couple of years, but usually two or three months later than this. So this was a surprise. It's already starting to melt.
